< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYLINCOLNSHIRE SHOWFor many people, the LincolnshireShow is the most important two daysof the summer. It’s the time whenpeople from all over the county, fromScunthorpe to Stamford, get togetherat the Lincolnshire Showground tomeet, eat, shop and showcase to thewider world that Lincolnshire is avibrant and colourful county.Last year, despite fairly miserableweather, some 68,000 people attendedthe show, matching the record figuresof the year before. These numbersdon’t just illustrate that the show hasa great cultural impact – it’s also amajor financial boost to the area. It’sestimated that for every pound spentat the show, £20 is generated for thelocal economy, while the numeroustrade exhibitors and local companiesget the opportunity to display theirwares to a wide audience. Don’t forgettoo the TV and radio crews thatdescend on the event and promoteLincolnshire to the wider world.Much of the success of theLincolnshire Show over the years hasbeen based on its traditionalattractions. This was illustrated in theCountryside ring last year when theprogramme included medievaljousting and pig racing and thelivestock lines played host to morethan 1800 entries of cattle, sheep, pigsand goats. Nearly 1800 horses andponies were also on show in theequine ring, and the competitionsremain a prestigious event – last yearlocal rider Malcolm Wright claimedhis second win in the ExpressEventing series, in a thrilling finishwhich went right to the final fence inthe showjumping. But the Show has continued tomove with the times and last year theshow’s Twitter feed recorded 2.56million visits from 286,000 people, with over a thousand tweets madeduring the two days. Indeed the rise ofsocial media now means that eventhose who can’t make the show canenjoy the experience no matter wherethey are in the world (and don’t forgetthe Lincolnshire Today website will beTicket prices are the same as last year - £20 for adults, £6 for under sixteens and £45 for a family ticket, and if youorder them in advance, they’re reduced to £18 for adults, £15 for those aged 17 to 22, £5.50 for kids and £40 forfamilies. WoodhallSpa was famously the home of the Dambusters during WorldWar II and the Red Arrows continue to be based at RAFScampton and the Waddington Air Show is renowned as oneof the leading aviation events in the UK.Lincolnshire’s long association with the military meansthat across the county there are memories of the people andtechnology that have gone into battle to defend the UK.Places such as the Newark Air Museum and the LincolnshireAviation Heritage Centre in East Kirby always make for aspectacular and often very moving day out.You may have seen East Kirby on your screens in recentmonths. Ewan McGregor filmed the latest of hisdocumentaries at the centre, while on Christmas Day, thepreserved Lancaster bomber “Just Jane” that takes pride ofplace at the centre was star of the festive episode of DoctorWho. The beautifully restored bomber frequently performsfour engine taxy runs – in fact, this is the only place in theworld you can see this performed on an original airfield. Ourpicture, right, was only taken recently but illustrates how theplane remains a spectacular sight to this day.The Newark Air Museum, meanwhile, continues to featuresome excellent examples of our military heritage and tellstories of great triumphs and tragedies. Most recently it hascommemorated the 55th anniversary of the Sutton Wick54 The best of British!Lincolnshire’s proud history is packed with examples of the British spirit – and it lives onAmong the most recent additions to theNewark Air Museum are a two-seaterJaguar T2A XX829. On boardthe aircraft were eighteen personnel andeleven RAF Police dogs, and only threepersonnel survived the crash, while twolocal villagers were also killed. The displayat the Museum pays tribute to this tragicevent.Among the most recent additions to theMuseum are a two-seater Jaguar T2AXX829, the first ‘complete’ militaryairframe to join the collection since theSaab Viggen in 2006, and the Yellow Sun nuclear weaponcasing, on loan from RAF Stafford. Yellow Sun was the firstBritish operational high-yield strategic nuclear weapon, andits arrival is timely as it coincided with the Tribute to V-Forcereunion event that the museum is hosting at the end ofApril. The event is bringing together former V-Bomber crewswho would have flown the aircraft that would have beenrequired to drop the Yellow Sun in the event of conflict.Lincolnshire’s proud aviation history has many facets. RAFWaddington was renowned as the home of the Vulcanbomber, one of the most famous planes of all time. You mayhave seen the incredible story of the Vulcan on TV recently, with a documentary explaining how the bomber wasvirtually brought out of mothballs to play a pivotal role inthe Falklands War – some forty or so years since it carried outa similar role in the Second World War.Of course, the RAF still play a major role in Lincolnshire tothis day and the Red Arrows remain one of the region’s mostfamous residents. The troupe were hit by tragedy last year, but happily the memory of the late pilot Jon Egging lives on,and recently students from The Priory Witham Academy inLincoln have been chosen to pioneer a new nationalprogramme. Ten children are working with a range ofpersonnel, including air crew from RAF Scampton, RAFConingsby and RAF Cranwell, towards the development of anew vocational qualification devised by the Jon Egging Trust. The Blue Skies scheme, led by Flight-Lieutenant Egging’swidow Dr Emma Egging, will help young people learn anddevelop new abilities relevant to the workplace, includingskills in communication, presentation, organisation, teamwork and leadership. Dr Egging says, “We see the Trustas an ‘enabler’ which creates partnerships and developsopportunities for young people who may be at risk of under-achieving in the formal education system. It will link themwith inspirational people and environments connected toaviation.”The Blue Skies scheme will surely help a new generationdemonstrate the sense of community spirit and enthusiasmthat Lincolnshire’s history is bound up in.
