These offshore windfarms need onshore facilities tomanufacture, maintain andship the turbines, and it’sexpected that Lincolnshirewill play host to many.E.ON’s £3 millionoperations andmaintenance baseon Grimsby’s NorthQuay has nowreceived the go-SHOREsuccess?The county is well-placed to become a worldleader in offshore energy – but there are stillhurdles that need to be overcome072-073:Layout 1 15/4/13 08:42 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY73BUSINESS TODAYtechnology and maintenance, as well asmany others, could all benefit from thisgrowing renewable energy hub. Yet it’svital to remember that there are certainlychallenges in applying existing methodsto offshore developments – even the mostadept electrician or joiner, for example, may find it rather tougher to carry outtheir job at great height. That’s why manylocal training providers are introducingnew courses and schemes to ensurebusinesses are fully adept at meeting thenew requirements.Offshore wind developments have theobvious advantage for many people inLincolnshire in that, unlike onshore farms, they’re nowhere near as prominent. Thecounty’s flat landscape makes it anobvious place to locate windfarms butmany continue to resent the arrival ofwhat they often consider to be noisy andunsightly turbines too close to theirhomes.Indeed, one example of the jugglingact between creating an effective onshorewind farm and appeasing the views of thepublic can be found near Saxby All Saintsin Lincolnshire where energy giant RWENpower Renewables were initiallyrefused planning permission to installwind turbines. The new proposal, for a much smaller farm, will bethe subject of a much-delayedPublic Inquiry in Brigg in May. Whetherthe wind farm is eventually built or not, itdoes illustrate the huge logistical workthat has to be put in to ensure sensitiveplanning – and why many people havesuggested the current number of onshoredevelopments are enough and thatoffshore should be the priority.Offshore energy doesn’t just begin andend with windfarms, however. Tidalenergy is also likely to prove valuable forour part of the world, and the highestprofile marine energy project in ourregion is undoubtedly the Able MarineEnergy Park in North Killingholme.Currently the proposals for thisdevelopment are with the governmentand a recommendation is due shortly. Atthe recent launch of the Growing theHumber fund in Scunthorpe, BusinessMinister Michael Fallon specificallyreferred to the Park’s development as animportant aspect in creating the “EnergyEstuary” that is likely to prove so valuablefor the area. The environmental aspect of thesetechniques can prove to be somewhatcontroversial, but the University of Hull’sInstitute of Estuarine and Coastal Studiesis helping to monitor the environmentalimpact of these types of tidal streampower generators, and the interactionbetween coastal developments, humanactivities and plant and animal life,. This isa vital role as one of the complicationswith the Marine Energy Park has been itseffect on the birds and animals that makethe Humber estuary their home and theircontinued safety.Lincolnshire businesses could certainlybenefit from the rise of renewable energy– but it’s clear much work needs to bedone to please all parties.ahead and construction by ISG will becomplete this summer, with up to fiftyjobs likely to be created. It’s thanks toextensive public and private investmentthat the company has chosen to locatehere, with an upgrade of the lock gatesat the Port of Grimsby East allowing fora huge increase in the size and shapeof vessels that can arrive there –providing much increased flexibility. The base is part of E.ON’s HumberGateway offshore wind farmdevelopment which will feature 73turbines off the coast at Spurn. It’sestimated that these turbines willgenerate up to 219MW of electricitywhich will provide power for around170,000 homes. At a time when theimportance of a mix of energy sourceshas been emphasised and encouragedby the government, Lincolnshire islikely to contribute a huge amount tothe UK’s energy requirements. It’s not just the windfarmsthemselves that will provideplenty of new jobs, however, but the associated supplychains – and companiesinvolved in logistics,Reduce energy bills & protect the environment A range of masonry coatings to reduce• fuel bills • carbon footprint • environmental impactTelephone: 01652 657285Mobile: 07747 560071 www.ecosealcoatings.co.uk072-073:Layout 1 15/4/13 08:42 Page 2Duckworth Land Rover, Boston101 London Road, Kirton, Boston, Lincolnshire PE20 1JH08432 189003 www.duckworth.boston.landrover.co.ukDuckworth Land Rover, Market RasenRacecourse Garage, Willingham Road, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire LN8 3RE08432 189008 www.duckworthlandrover.co.ukWith all the performance and reliability you’ve come to expect, the latest Freelander 2 sets new standards for driver and passenger comfort, with a remodeled interior. They emphasise the car’s low, extended silhouette with the windscreen shifted forward and aroof line that reaches far back.Especially expressive and characteristic are the active recesses inthe doors, which guide induction air into the scoops on the rearside panels and from there directly to the engine. These offer themost prominent visual indication of the car’s mid-engined layout. From the front, the new Cayman is marked by its assertivecooling air intakes, which increase in size towards the sides of thecar. Integrated into these, far outboard, are the round front lightswith four-point daytime running lights or position lights, servingas a further unmistakable identifying feature of the new motor.Just as unique to the new generation of the two-seater sportscoupe is the rear boot-lid made of aluminium and the rear sectionwith its wrap-around edges. At the upper edge of the rearwindow, an LED brake light spanning the entire width of the glassis easily spotted by traffic behind. Mounted directly to the tailgateis the wafer-thin blade of the rear spoiler, which - in contrast tothat of the Boxster - is higher and deploys at a steeper angle.
