That’s certainlythe case for Scunthorpe-born writer, poetand broadcaster John Osborne who, fullof nostalgia for his childhood holidays, spent a year touring some of the UK’sfavourite resorts – including Skegness andCleethorpes – to rediscover Britain’sholidaying past for his new book, Don’tNeed The Sunshine.John tells us, “We used to holiday inScarborough when we were young whichwas the nearest ‘nice’ family resort. Eventhough I grew up near Skegness I’d neveractually been until I went there for thebook, while I’ve been to Cleethorpesfairly regularly. What was most interestingwhile I was writing the book was not somuch visiting places I’d never been tobefore but going back to places likeCleethorpes and seeing them with adulteyes. Writing the book means I really gotthe sense of the history of the place and Ifelt a bit guilty pre-judging it. I alwaysthought Cleethorpes was a bit crap butwhen you get to know the history of theplace, it’s really special.”So what had changed from John’schildhood? “I think one of the nicestthings is that you really see the care thathas gone into Cleethorpes. In a lot of thetowns I went to, you felt like it had beenabandoned, Great Yarmouth is a greatexample. But in Cleethorpes there arelots of new developments, and there’sclearly been lots of love and affectionbeen put into it.“In every seaside town there are peopletrying to preserve the past – peopletrying to conserve lidos and theatres, andin Cleethorpes’ case the Winter Gardens.Sometimes they’re successful andsometimes they’re not but they fight forit. Even if it too late to save it, like theWinter Gardens, there’s still campaigns torecognise them and just have a blueplaque there.”John also visited Butlins in Skegness –still a popular attraction, but now farremoved from its roots. “Butlins is a greatexample of somewhere that suffered inthe past but has now pulled itselftogether again. I was lucky enough tomeet the Managing Director who toldme how they’ve recovered from theslump of the eighties and nineties andmade themselves a viable attractionagain, getting families involved.“There’s no point in being sentimentalabout the bygone days – things aren’tgoing to be like that anymore and youhave to accept that, but also createsomething brand new that ensures itexists in the 21st Century.”John’s book is a nostalgic and hugelyentertaining book that celebrates the pastand present of our seaside resorts. Are there plans to release it asa physical book? What are youropinions on the rise of digital sales?Yes, a physical version will hopefully becoming out later this year. I plan todonate half of the author royalties thebook incurs to the charity, ME ResearchUK which funds biomedical research intoME/CFS - the illness that my glandularfever developed into. I’m currently in theearly stages of designing a new cover forthis edition of the book because I want itto be as special as possible. How easy did you find it to write ‘Tethers’? Some days the paragraphs would justflow out of me, and others it was a battleto string a single sentence together. Thewhole process took about two years, which is obviously a very long time, and Isuppose reflects how difficult, but entirelypossible, writing a novel actually is.How much research is involved inwriting one of your novels?I spent hours upon hours researchingVictorian life in Lincolnshire and I must sayit was fascinating, not a chore in theslightest! My favourite aspect was perhapslife on the waterways – a style of living thatis non-existent in today’s society. Wholefamilies would live in the single crampedcabin of a narrowboat as they transportedsupplies up and down the waterways. Thelife was incredibly tough and childrenwould work full days as soon as they couldwalk. When I decided to set Tethers in thepast I wasn’t actually aware of how muchwork it would entail, but I really havelearned an incredible amount and I thinkthe novel is so much the better for it.For more information, log ontowww.jackcroxall.co.ukJack Croxall is a young writerwho has just published his debutnovel ‘Tethers’ which is set inVictorian Lincolnshire and isinspired by the likes ofMablethorpe and the Wolds. Weask him what made him become awriter and what inspires him. Tetheredto thecoastWhat got you into writing?I got my first taste of writing for anaudience while studying EnvironmentalScience at Nottingham University. I wrotea few articles for student publications andwebsites, which was great fun and animmensely educational experience. Isuppose I was immediately bitten by thewriting bug and, as soon as I leftNottingham, I signed up to study ScienceCommunication at postgraduate level tobetter my writing and journalism skills.Unfortunately, however, a term into thecourse I was struck down with glandularfever and suddenly left with a lot of freetime on my hands whilst I recovered. Ihad always felt I had a novel in me so,when I could, I sat down with the laptopand Tethers was the result! Your book is set largely on theLincolnshire coast, what drew you tothe area?Large parts of my family originate fromLincolnshire - my grandparents met andlived near Mablethorpe after The War forexample - and so a lot of my families’stories take place in the county. Havinggrown up in and around Lincolnshire andNottinghamshire myself, I think it wasonly natural that, when I came to writemy own story, it should be set in theplaces I fell in love with as a child.
