Forsome carers it’s something they do for a couple of hours a week, but for others it can be a round the clock, full-time occupation.Everyone’s needs are different. That’s something that perhaps isn’t emphasised often enough.Often older people are considered one single group but that’s acatch-all description that covers everyone from 65 to 105, andolder – a massive number of people, all of whom have differenttastes and opinions.Across Lincolnshire there are plenty of options to get exactlythe care that’s right for each person. Many old people are fiercelyindependent and wish to enjoy privacy, but recognise that theyaren’t as active as they used to be. A valuable option in thisregard is sheltered accommodation. Residents here treat theirrooms as their own homes, coming and going as they please, inviting guests when they want and engaging any carers andother services at their own request – but communal areas meanthey can enjoy each other’s company and have someone to turnto when they require companionship and security. This kind of accommodation is often used by those in search ofrespite care – they may have just left hospital or are recoveringfrom a serious illness and are aiming to get back on their feet.Helpinghands93 PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/LISA S.090-094:Layout 1 11/4/14 11:42 Page 292 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFor professional legal help, contactFraser Wise & Co Solicitors todayAreas we cover include:• Family law- including divorce, children issues & cohabitation• Wills and probate- including preparation of wills, trusts & probate administration• Employment law- legal help for employers & employees• Residential conveyancing- including buying & selling properties• Litigation- including debt disputes & company disputesContact us today to book your consultation.Grantham phone 01476 561870 / 566646Or fax 01476 567617 www.fraserwisesolicitors.co.ukFraser Wise & CoFraser Wise& CoSpecialists in bathroom adaptionsSpecialists in bathroom adaptionsWhen bathing becomes difficult let us re-design your bathroom with a stylish, practical bathing solution Wet floors Walk in showers and baths Slip resistant flooring Grabrails, Shower seats Raised height toilets Tiling or tile panelsGrants & Council workDiscounts for SSFA, British Legion Ex- services & OAPsTel: 0800 7316495CALL YOUR LOCAL OFFICE TODAY LOUTH01507 389222SKEGNESS01754 629189BOSTON01205 449326www.ahminstallations.co.ukFuneral BondGuaranteed peace of mind for you and your familyA Lincolnshire Co-op Funeral Bond offers unrivalled peace of mind & protection against the rising cost of funerals. For many old people, theyare happy to continue their live ontheir own but welcome the occasionalouting or visit to provide a break fromthe same four walls and a chance tohave a chat and a cuppa with friends. It also provides those who care forthem at home a chance to relax, knowing they’re in safe hands. One of the big success stories inLincolnshire is the First Contact schemefrom Lincolnshire County Council, which aims to create a tailor-madeservice for each individual. The schemeworks by providing older people with aquestionnaire to allow them toLet’s talk about itThe importance of considering what’s rightfor everyone is of particular relevance when itcomes to considering the end of life. Dying isa difficult subject to discuss but how else canwe expect our loved ones to know what wewant? This year Lincolnshire Co-op is supportingDying Matters Awareness Week, running from12th to 18th May. Some of its eighteenfuneral homes will open their doors to givepeople the chance to look around and learnmore about what’s involved. The theme ofthe week is ‘You only die once’ and peopleare encouraged to take five simple steps tomake their end of life experience better, fromtelling family their wishes, to planning aheadwith a funeral bond. A funeral bond in particular offers peace ofmind for both you and your family byplanning all of the details in advance. Therealso isn’t a bill for your loved ones to pay at adifficult time. Find out more at dyingmatters.org orwww.lincolnshire.coop.describe the help that they woulddesire, and these responses are thenacted upon. The obvious benefit for the personusing the scheme is that, while we heara lot about the importance of choice, for many people the sheer number oforganisations offering support can bebewildering – not to mention theburden of having to fill in umpteenforms for each individual service.Through First Contact, people canenjoy the services of many helpfulorganisations – including the police, the council’s housing teams, thepensions service and numerousvoluntary organisations, among manyothers – without having the hassle ofapproaching each of them individually. The result is a pot pourri of tailoredsupport without each person having tofit into a pre-planned programme. If you’re exploring what care isavailable, across Lincolnshire there’splenty on offer and the numerous careproviders can certainly point you in theright direction.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ITSMEJUST090-094:Layout 1 11/4/14 11:42 Page 494 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCARE FOR THE ELDERLYMaking time forolder peopleAbbeyfield at Winchester House, Grimsby, offers independent living with supportAbbeyfield atWinchesterHouse in PelhamRoad, Grimsby, isthe perfect optionfor those who wish toenjoy living independently butdon’t want to live alone. Some of his work has also beenadapted for radio, television and theatre. We sit down with him on a sunny dayat the seafront and ask him all about hiswriting. How did you get into writing books forchildren, is it something you’ve alwaysdone? When my eldest daughter was aboutthree I started telling her bedtime stories- made up on the spot! It was fun forboth of us. Then I decided to write thestories and that became a hobby. After afew years I tried my luck with magazineand annual publishers and I wassurprised how successful I was. Then in1987 I had my first picture book, TheKing Bird, published by Andersen Press. What a joy! What inspires you to create thesefantastic stories? To me an inspiration can be anything:a phrase, an action, a situation, a mentalpicture… Anything like that can triggeran idea for a story. However, most of thetime I rely on my lively imagination. Idaydream. I make up things in my mind.I create a problem and I try to solve it.That’s how a story is born.Being based on the Lincolnshire coast, would you say you are inspired by thesea or the coast?I love the sea and I’m lucky to live inCleethorpes. Most of the ideas I havecome to me when I’m walking. Quiteoften I take a stroll along the beach orthe promenade for inspiration. Little ideaspop into my head just like dreambubbles! What other authors do you admire, both children’s and adults? My favourite children’s author iswithout a doubt Roald Dahl. In myopinion he has no equal. He’s simply agenius, the true children’s writer! Myfavourite book of his is James and theGiant Peach.I’m not sure I have a favouriteauthor for adultsbut if I had to pickone it would be JohnSteinbeck. He’s amaster storyteller. What do you thinkmakes a good storyfor children and doyou have any tips forthose interested inwriting themselves?A story, be it forchildren or adults, must havethe proper ingredients: aninteresting storyline, a solidplot, credible characters anda strong narrative. If you wishto write for children respectthem first; don’t preach tothem, they won’t like it; be their friend, see everything from their perspective…And above all, be honest. With ‘The Big Splash’ do you thinkparents will read it with their childrenor do you think children will take alook through in their own time? The Big Splash is quite a simple storyreally. It has familiar words, rhythm andrepetitions and that’ll make it easy tofollow. I think after children have heardthe story a few times they will remembermost of it and will want to read itthemselves.Making abig splash!A H Benjamin is a children’s author based in Cleethorpes. His newbook ‘The Big Splash’ is a wonderful way to get kids interested inreading and seems relevant to our issue on all things coastal. 095:Layout 1 11/4/14 10:14 Page 196 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYGainsboroughThursday 22nd MayNational Theatre Live, Trinity ArtsCentreAcclaimed stage productions from theNational Theatre in London will bebroadcast live on the big screen at TrinityArts Centre.
