When I left Yes again in 1980 wewere asked if we would take it on a UKtour, but we went to the storage placewhere all the music was kept – this waspre-computers, it was all written down –and everything had gone. It was neverfound, so we could never perform itagain.“Move forward to about six or sevenyears ago and a box from Australiaarrived at my house, which I thinkcame from the estate of the originalconductor David Measham. It wasfull of music – and right at thebottom was the originalconductor’s score, which was interrible condition. My friendGuy Protheroe spent sixmonths restoring it and gettingall the information oncomputer, so we could do itagain! “Guy said that when we didthe original it was muchlonger – it was an hour long, but we had to cut it down to 36 minutesas that’s all you could fit on an album. What a great opportunity to do it againand put in all the missing music! So werevisited it, put in all the missing stuffand recorded it at Abbey Road, whichtook about nine months. We releasedabout 12,500 to the hardcore fans whowe knew would tell us what they thoughtof it, and we decided if they said theydidn’t like it we wouldn’t go any further. But the response was phenomenal andwe got tens of thousands of emails frompeople telling us we had to do it live! “One of the first I saw was fromsomeone who said he was 45 and said hewas too young to see it the first time, and I thought ‘too young?!’. Then Irealised, yes, he would have been fiveyears old!”Musician and raconteur Rick Wakeman is bringing his newproduction of Journey to the Centre of the Earth to GrimsbyRick Wakeman is renowned as one ofBritain’s most accomplished musicians, having been in the business for nearlyfifty years – as a prolific session musician,as a member of Yes and The Strawbs andas a highly successful solo artist. In recentyears, though, he’s perhaps becomealmost as famous for appearing on TVshows like Grumpy Old Men andWatchdog and entertaining royally withhis own brand of humour. He’s showcasing both when he comesto Grimsby Auditorium on Thursday 1stMay to tell the story of, and perform, hisYes, it’s Rick102-103:Layout 1 11/4/14 11:40 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY103INTERVIEW WITH…The new show doesn’t just feature themusic but also Rick telling the story ofhow it came back to life. “Theperformance with the band, the orchestraand the narrator – a cast of millions – thatnow takes about 75 minutes so it was amatter of what to do with the first half. Itwas actually my manager who came upwith the idea, he mentioned the one manshows I occasionally do, and he said Imust have some ridiculous stories fromwhen I originally took it on the road. Isaid it was pure Spinal Tap. He said, justget a piano and tell stories to set thescene for the second half.“It’s going to be interesting becausewe’re not going to do it again. It’s socomplicated it takes about nine monthsto put together, so it’s just not possible!”The sheer scale of Journey to theCentre of the Earth makes it something ofa forerunner for the huge arena showsthat are commonplace in pop today. Ricksays, “Everybody’s doing the big arenashows now, but nobody really goes outwith an orchestra and choir and thewhole kitchen sink as we did in theseventies. It’s a seventies idea done in a21st century production.“You’ve got tons and tons of what I calllight shows, where you’re watching theproduction and you can marvel at thewonderful lights, but at the end of theday, if you’re sitting there for two hours, how much can you keep marvelling atthe lights? It’s got to be moreentertaining. It’s like going to watch aplay.”Rick’s humour also makes it a hugelyentertaining evening, and indeed a newgeneration knows him just as much forhis comedic talents as well as hismusicianship. “It’s not been deliberate, but my life has taken lots of differentdirections, which is really lovely. Every dayis different, I do my grumpy rants onWatchdog and I used to love doingCountdown.“When I told my dad I wanted to be aprofessional musician, he told me that upto now music had just been fun but nowit was going to have to pay for my livingand be prepared not everything wasgoing to run smoothly – which wasright!”Journey to the Centre of the Earthcomes to Grimsby Auditorium onThursday 1st May, and to book tickets, call the box office on 0844 871 3016 orvisit www.atgtickets.com/grimsby.102-103:Layout 1 11/4/14 11:40 Page 2104 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYSUDOKUcompetitionClosing date for entries is: 20th MAY2014To enter just email the numbers thatappear in the yellow squares to:competitions@blmgroup.co.ukWin a £20 voucher tospend with any of ouradvertisers in this issue.Last month’s solutionM1A3RD3E0C846123957329578146157964823593742618468315792712896435671259384935487261284631579Aries Mar 21 - Apr 20A new romance will gather momentumputting you in a very dizzy state of mind.Be mindful of a friend who enjoys a goodgossip. There is no better finish for a cycle race and I’m really looking forward to 2015 asLincolnshire will be hosting the British National Cycling Championships.Where is the best night out in the county? We have some great nights out in the area and I would recommend cocktails at theElectric Bar at the Hilton, the views are fantastic overlooking Brayford Wharf, followed bya meal at the Wig and Mitre. Obviously I would also suggest people come along to oneof our dinners or balls at Hemswell Court too! What do you think is the best thing about Lincolnshire people?Lincolnshire people are very unassuming and a pleasure to work with, Pygott & Cronehave offices all over the county and have had great support from Lincolnshire customers.LincolnshireToday @lincstoday lincolnshiretoday.netStay in touch withLincolnshire TodayWe love to know what you think of Lincolnshire Today – so get in touch with us viaTwitter at @lincstoday or search for us on Facebook.
