< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYLINCOLNSHIRE WALKSWe begin in Skillington, “Schellintune” ofthe Domesday Book, which has two innsboth with unusual names. The early 19thcentury saw fierce competition for localParliamentary seats from, amongst others, the local Manners-Tollemache family. Theysupported the Whigs, whose colour wasblue, against the Tories (red) and withextensive landholdings could forceinnkeepers to change the names of theirhostelries. Buying of votes throughhospitality was of course rife too! Thus itcame about that at one time Grantham andthe surrounding area had over thirty “Blue”inns including Skillington’s “Blue Horse”.One of the Manners also became theMarquis of Granby and had strong linkswith the 21st Lancers, with headquarters inGrantham; the “Crossed Swords” refers tothem. In 1859 a new rector, 31 year-old CharlesHudson, arrived at St James Skillington buthe was also an accomplished mountaineer, regarded as one of the best amateurs ofthe time. Whilst in Zermatt in 1865rumour came that an Italian team wasnearby to attempt the first ascent of theMatterhorn and Hudson grabbed thechance to join a party being organised byveteran alpinist Edward Whymper to beatthem. Whymper, Hudson, two others andtwo local guides set out on 13th July andmade it – first! – to the summit on thefollowing day. Tragedy struck however ontheir descent when four of them, includingHudson, fell 4,000 feet to their deaths.Hudson was buried at the Englische Kirkeat Zermatt. Whymper wrote in detail about theevent in his book “Scrambles in the Alps”– a somewhat understated title! Theirachievement however is commemorated inSKILLINGTON AND SALTBYThis month we are in the far southwest of Lincolnshire at the Leicestershire borderdiscovering derring-do deeds in the Swiss Alps and a former USA WWII airfield.Exploring Lincolnshireon footMATTERHORN WINDOWSALTBY AIRFIELD MEMORIALAPPROACHING STOKE PASTURE WOODSt JAMESCHURCHSKILLINGTON050-051:Layout 1 11/4/14 10:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE WALKSSt James by two stained glass windows, both depicting the Matterhorn, onedonated by Whymper and “BrotherMountaineers”. After a shorttrack and a gate walk up a meadow to astile in the centre of the top hedge, thenin a second meadow head for anotherstile in the far left-hand corner. Now keepforward on grass headlands through fourfields to a farm road and turn right. At a bend and waymark go left througha hedge to a second waymark a few feetahead, go through another hedge andturn right to a stile at a road. Now go leftfor 300 yards and at the entrance ofHeslin’s Barn Farm turn left along the farmroad. Just beyond the farmhouse awaymark directs you right onto a grasstrack. At the field corner go left on anothersemi-surfaced track and at a concrete roadcross onto a continuing track half left, keeping ahead past a plantation. On reaching the corner of StokePasture Wood follow the track leftwards, soon bearing right past Mere Barn Farmto continue on a grass track with a hedgeon your left.
