But anyone who’s come back from a day at thebeach only to find the salt water playing havoc with hair andleaving it frizzy and dehydrated, while drying out the skin, mayhave a different view. There are ways to combat this, however, and make the most ofthe coast. Salt water and chlorine are not the most fantastic itemsfor your hair but a little extra preparation can make all thedifference. Spraying your hair before you head off to the beach orthe pool with a leave-in conditioner can be of particular valuebecause it has thermal barriers, UV filters and naturally derivedwheat proteins to strengthen and protect the hair. When the weather’s fine it’s also important to shampoo the hairthoroughly each evening using a protein moisture shampoo alongwith a combination conditioner with natural and organicingredients. The point is to control by the small amount ofmoisture that hair has naturally, which is protected by seven to tenlayers of hard protein known as the cuticle. Using a proteinmoisture shampoo will therefore ensure that the harmful effects ofthe sun, salt water and chlorine don’t damage your hair in thelong run.Although the sea can cause problems with your hair, some of itswonders are proving hugely popular in beauty treatments. Seawater concentrate in numerous products works instantly torevitalise cells, helping skin feel refreshed and revitalised, while seaclay is regularly used in beauty treatments thanks to its status ofone of the purest natural substances of all. Many Lincolnshire salons and spas offer slimming wraps thatmake great use of this. In these wraps, the sea clay itself draws thetoxins out of the skin. Via a process known as detoxification, it alsoworks by compaction, lymphatic drainage and skin tightening.Toxins are stored in the fluid surrounding our cells, where they gettrapped, and they can take years to build up, so generally a courseof three wraps, seven to ten days apart, will give the best result. The wraps aren’t intended to serve as a replacement for exerciseand healthy eating, but to be used in addition to it.There are other marine-based beauty products that can make allthe difference. Take, for example, Wakame Sea Kelp. Rich inVitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 and calcium, sodium, iron andpotassium, Wakame Sea Kelp has been shown to inhibit anenzymatic reaction that breaks down hyaluronic acid, helping skinto retain moisture and volume. Sea Kelp is also a good naturalsource of Iodine which can be taken through dietary supplementsand can also be found in dairyproducts, shellfish and grains. It’swell known that thyroid imbalancescan contribute to hair loss, andhelping to support the normalfunction of thyroid hormones,Anoasis ofcalmMaking sure your hair and skin are lookedafter will ensure there’s no lasting damagefrom your coastal adventuresWhen the weather’s fine it’s also important to shampoo the hairthoroughly each evening using a protein moisture shampoo alongwith a combination conditioner with natural and organic ingredients066-067:Layout 1 11/4/14 12:33 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY67HAIR & BEAUTYCracked heelsor irritatedskin?Angela Riggall of Red Roof Clinic, Lincolnoffers some helpA common issue at any time of theyear is dry cracked heels. There arenumerous adverts offeringproducts to help ease theproblem, from creams andlotions, to pumice stones or‘cheese grater’ type devices! Many patients who attend theclinic have usually tried them all butstill have the problem, so what is theanswer? First, stop using devices and get tothe root of the problem. Secondly, see a professional who canhelp to make that diagnosis and propose a treatment plan. There are many conditions which can cause the skin on thesoles of the feet to dry and crack, so with a thorough history ofthe problem, the cure can often be simple and quick to solve. If the cause is due to a fungal infection, nails may also beinvolved. They will look different and be thick or yellow inappearance. Nail samples can be taken to confirm a diagnosisbut if taken incorrectly, can return a negative result. Years laterwhen more nails are involved, the treatment is more complex, soif you feel you are suffering, call in for an opinion.Red Roof Clinic is happy to offer a free consultation, so if thisis you, book in today!Stopusing devicesand getto the rootof theproblemBar Lane, Waddington, Lincoln LN5 9SATel: 01522 722595info@redroofclinic.co.ukwww.redroofclinic.co.ukRed Roof Clinic is an established Podiatry Clinic inWaddington, LincolnDry cracked heels a problem?Itchy irritating skin - Creams not working?Call for a FREE 10 minute Consultation and advice to bring your feet back to good conditioniodine is particularly important for your diet – so there is somebenefit from making use of Sea Kelp tablets if you want tomotivate your metabolism. Also derived from the ocean, marine plant extract has beenshown to protect against free radical attack and protect againstphoto induced collagen degradation, while seaweed extract hasbeen shown to protect against collagen degradation, induced byUVA and stimulates collagen neosynthesis. There are other natural delights as well, including Squalane, which is derived from a plant source. This molecule has a naturalaffinity with the skin and helps prevent trans-dermal water loss, aiding collagen production. It seems that everywhere you turnin the past three months or so there’s theinevitable spate of nutritional naming andshaming after the indulgence onslaught of thefestive season. However, now a bit of thehysteria has died down I’d like to try myhardest to put the aforementioned issue tobed, hopefully for good!I feel that one of the biggest problems withthe general public’s understanding of food isperhaps caused by the misrepresentation of itinto over simplified categories, be it caloriesor macro nutrient groups (grams of eithercarbohydrate, fat, or protein). These umbrellaterms used to represent food constantly take it in turn to receivea kicking as public enemy number one. If,according to the majority of the press weshould steer clear of the evils of sugars (orcarbohydrates as they’re less venomouslyreferred to), proteins can potentially causecancer, or that fats are an addictive waistline-expanding nightmare, it begs the question, what is left to eat? Unfortunately, this perhaps diverts ourattention away from an even simpler truththat we’ve known all along, but just failed tosubmit to.It’s my belief that this sweepingcategorisation wrongly lumps together both‘good’ and ‘bad’ foods into the sameheadspace. The grams of carbohydrate, fatand protein that make up our foods tell you very little about the2 DAYPASSESAVAILABLEWhat to eat?Our new fitness expert Luke Gibbons is a personal fitness specialist at David Lloyd Lincoln. Here, heexplains why choosing what to eat isn’t as simple as we seem to make it. PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/MAMBO6435PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/HANNAMARIAH068-069:Layout 1 11/4/14 11:52 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY69HEALTH & WELLBEINGactual value it in sustaining a healthy metabolism. In myexperience, the split between processed and unprocessed foodsis a far a simpler approach for both health and reaching an idealweight. In my world, you can’t have one without the other.Eating to a drastic calorie deficit or by cutting back on a macronutrient group, although initially successful, often plateaus oreven stops altogether through the health problems caused bythe inevitable malnutrition. I’m looking at you Atkins! For example a portion of carbohydrates is based around a 30gserving. This equates to around two slices of bread, or handful ofpasta. Whereas the equivalent carbohydrate from say broccoli isaround 400g! The same is true for 200g of blueberries, don’teven get me started on the kilo of spinach or 300g of carrots itwould take to equate to this same 30g serving. I’m sure we canagree that it would be pretty much impossible to over consumethese foods through the sheer volume. Unfortunately, we fail to recognise dietary staples such asbread, pasta, and cereals as highly processed foods. Even themuch touted health benefits of whole grains and its fibrecontent just don’t stack up when compared to their unprocessedcousins. Although I’m focusing on carbohydrates here the samehealth benefits are true for fat and protein. I think in our world of quick fix diets and the media’scontinuing thirst for an exciting story, the issue of what to eatfor weight loss gets lost beneath the more long term, benefit ofliving longer healthier lives (which side effects include weightloss). We’re talking Micro nutrients not Macro nutrients, producenot products. When it comes to what to eat, ask yourself thequestion “does this even look like real food?”.If the answer is no, it’s probably not that great for your weightloss goal. This revelation that natural, whole foods beatprocessed lifeless ones (kept edible through the use ofpreservatives and E-numbers) shouldn’t be news to anyone.Unfortunately, it just doesn’t make for a very exciting article!BURTON WATERS CLINICDo you suffer from...Foot Pain?Knee Pain?Back Pain?Orthotic intervention helps to reduce pain, slow the progression of a deformity or prevent injury.Orthoc treatment is not just for professional athletes or people with complex medical condionsBook your assessment with a qualified and experienced Orthost.6 & 7 The Landings | Burton Waters | Lincoln | LN1 2TUCALL 01522 520 362 /07946 598 133info@quaysorthotics.co.uk | www.quaysorthotics.co.ukPain-free forsummerPam Coulton shares the secret ofBurton Waters ClinicAs we approach the summer months, we all want to spend moretime out and about, working in the garden, taking to the streetsfor health and fitness, going away on holiday, or simply enjoyingthe long hours of daylight and the warmth of the sun.
