Its name comes from Old Englishfor the “hollow way” (sunken road) thatstill links the village eastwards onto thefens. St Andrew’s Church with its massivetower is mostly late 14th centuryperpendicular in style – there was someVictorian renovation in the 1860’s. Until1958 the Spilsby and Firsby Railway ran tothe south of the village where a stationand goods yard were situated. Followingan authorising Act of Parliament in 1865this 4½ mile long branch off the main EastLincolnshire line was opened in May 1868and operated for the company by theGreat Northern. Passenger services ceasedon 10th September 1939 with goodsservices surviving until November 1958.We cross it by an original road bridge, which gives the best view of the formerstation and goods shed now a privatehome and stables. At Toynton St Peters the church standsbehind a farmyard at a lane end where itwould once have occupied the villagecentre though it now overlooks fieldscontaining earthworks tracing theSPILSBY & THETOYNTONSOur May walk visits widelycontrasting wolds and fenlandscapes whilst ancientchurches and an oldabandoned railway provideadditional interest.EXPLORINGLincolnshireON FOOTALL SAINTS CHURCH TOYNTONEXPLORINGLincolnshireON FOOTmediaeval layout. The Domesday Bookindicates a sizeable community of around200 people and in excess of 600 acres ofland under cultivation. Again we arelooking at a perpendicular tower (14th to15th century) with the rest of the churchrestored in the 1870s. Toynton All Saints church is quiteremarkable and probably unique inLincolnshire. Outwardly all Georgianbrickwork, this encases a mediaevalbuilding, for inside gaps in the plasteringreveal the ancient masonry with one onthe north side still bearing hints of amediaeval wall painting. A ceramicindustry flourished here from the late 13thto the 17th century, so that it was onceknown as “Potter Toynton” its principalproducts being jugs made from local clays.Further up the hill stands the towerwindmill that replaced an earlier post millin the early 1800s and worked until the1930s.Re-entering Spilsby past St James’schurch and the huge Doric columns of theformer Sessions House, now a theatre, weexperience the unique sight for LincolnshireWEST MARKET SPILSBY30-31_Layout 1 17/04/2015 10:15 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE WALKSof three market places – West, Central andEast. Just across theroad at the bakers shop a plaquecommemorates his birthplace at“Franklin’s Passage”. The East Market stillhas a possibly 14th century market cross.Local word is that at one time you couldbuy a wife here for as little as ten shillings.NOTES.The route crosses several arablefields.THE ROUTE.
