< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COASTAL numerous venues and local companies offering courses, training and rental gear. If water isn’t your thing - or if the kids want something a little less like exercise - then you could do worse than to visit the Dunes Leisure Mablethorpe Fairground where numerous rides and attractions will be in full swing in the warmer months and toward the start of summer. The same can also be seen along Skegness and Cleethorpes seafront, both famed for their arcades, street food and fairground rides. There’s also Butlins Skegness, which was given a TripAdvisor award that nominated it in the top 1% of staycation destinations in the UK as voted for by their users - no small feat with how critical those on TripAdvisor can be! Animals and Wildlife Lincolnshire is famed for its countryside and wildlife and our coasts are no different. Just a few miles inland is the Lincolnshire Wolds, an area of outstanding natural beauty. Famously Instagrammable and well worth a visit, there are several walking paths through the Wolds that are fit for any age or fitness level. If you’re less interested in vistas and more interested in animals then you might be surprised just how many sanctuaries, wildlife zones and zoos there are on our coastline. From the Jungle Zoo in Cleethorpes which hosts lizards, snakes and parrots, to Natureland Seal Sanctuary in Skegness - who host more than just seals, mind you. Penguins, alpacas and even a family of Meerkats make Natureland their home, the latter being very inquisitive and firm favourites thanks to Disney and a certain car insurance comparison website. Skegness also features the Skegness aquarium, which focuses both on entertainment and education, with numerous fish, a nursing shark and even an octopus. Travelling further south, Mablethorpe also has its own seal sanctuary and wildlife centre, which isn’t just for tourists and education, but also works with Mablethorpe Wildlife Rescue to rescue, treat and release seals who might be ill, sick or injured. Their hospital regularly cares for injured seals and other wildlife, nursing them back to health for their eventual release into the wild once more. Walks and Vistas We’ve mentioned the Lincolnshire Wolds already as an area of outstanding natural beauty and a must-visit destination, but our coastlines also feature their own walks. There really are too many to list, and more can be found online, but some of our favourites, and the most well- known, include the Coastal Path, a rather hefty 26km (16 miles) trek from Skegness to Mablethorpe, which may not be for the fair of heart or leg! Far more relaxed walks include Anderby Creek, Chapel Point and several sections of the Viking Way. © stock.adobe.com/Hedvika © stock.adobe.com/Anthony Dillon 48-51.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 14:16 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 51 COASTAL Advanced Bookings Only Newark, Grantham, Southwell, Lincoln and Sleaford areas. Being a coastal region, we have many shopping centres not far from the sea, including the obvious mentions we’ve already covered. Not too far from the coast is Boston, Spilsby and Louth however, market towns with plenty to offer in terms of quality and quantity. Lincolnshire has ever been a commercial and mercantile county, ever since the medieval ages, and this legacy has continued now. Along the way, both in these towns and nestled away in picturesque coastal scenery, are many restaurants, country pubs and inns that do our foody heritage proud. If in doubt, it’s always worth checking our magazine, or searching online, as many of the best venues can be hard to find - tucked away in secret little areas the locals know well, but that the passer-by might miss out on. Seeing as it’s by the seaside, you might be tempted to try out some fresh fish or seafood, and for that you can’t go far wrong. Fish caught in our docks and waters are some of the most coveted in the country and are exported out across the globe. No matter what you’re looking for or whereabouts on our coastline you are, there’s something to do on Lincolnshire’s coasts. All you need is the willingness to take a look, and a little adventurous spirit to lead you the rest of the way. Why not give our coasts another look this summer? Although spring was a shambles, with areas of the county battered with freezing winds, ice storms and even a flurry here and there of snow, summer has clearly woken from its slumber and is well and truly on the way. While there is plenty to enjoy about our county during the wintertime, it does very much look and feel as though it has come back to life and there is a veritable cornucopia of activities to attend to and sights to see. For many, one of the highlights of the coming months will undoubtedly be the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Love or loathe the Royal Family, you’d be hard pressed not to respect the Queen for her tenacity, dedication and longevity, especially over the last few years. Having lost her husband and been forced to mourn him alone, needless to say, Liz is in need of some spoiling. There will be many older folks among us who will have cause for celebrating their own longevity at reaching their seventieth birthday. Considering there are some 8.7 million people over seventy in the UK, there will be plenty who were old enough to have seen the Queen’s coronation. With so much going on, and the weather now firmly on our side, older folks will rightly want to soak up some rays and enjoy themselves, especially as Jubilee Celebrations reach fever pitch. Although we are each of us vulnerable to the sun, older folks are especially at risk, as much from skin cancers and severe sunburn, but also the increased risk of heat-related illness. Yet, fret not, there are plenty of ways to be able to safely enjoy the Jubilee and fun in the sun this late spring and summer. There are a number of considerations to mull over when it comes to letting elderly friends or relatives spend time out in the sun. It may sound patronising, but the body struggles to regulate temperature the older we get so often cold temperatures necessitate hats, scarves and jumpers. While it’s easy for one to layer up to fend off the chill, it’s a harder prospect keeping cool when it’s warm. For this reason, the best homes and other caring facilities across the county will boast air-conditioned facilities, ensuring that residents are kept cool and comfortable at all times. The benefit here is that while they can be used to keep things chill in the summertime, air cons can also blow warm for when autumn comes around again. But British weather as it is may mean that from one day to the next a different setting will be required. Another benefit of air cons, particularly in a resident’s bedroom, is that they can be set to individual preference. It’s a tall order to expect any two people to like the temperature setting to be the same. When health is at risk, as it often can be in older folks, it’s imperative that comfort and safety be observed at all times. For older relatives that are being cared for at home, there are several portable air conditioners and fans that can be a more attractive option than having an expensive unit installed. It’s all well and good keeping residents cool when inside, but what about out? We here at Lincolnshire Today would argue that access to the outdoors is a basic human right, one that shouldn’t be denied to anyone (health issues permitting). One of life’s simple little joys is sitting out in a garden in full bloom, breathing in the sweet floral scents and watching the animals and insects carry on nature’s beautiful ballet. To deny older folks this simple pleasure is to significantly diminish their quality of life. The difficulty, as previously mentioned, is temperature management. While we’re not suggesting wrapping up your nan in a woolly hat and duffel coat to ponder the pansies, it is important to note that an older person will likely not immediately realise if and when they feel the cold. For this reason it’s always best to wear one more layer than you’d think is needed. You can always take it off, if needs be, but if an older person is feeling cold and doesn’t have a jumper, cardigan or even blanket to hand, it can be detrimental to health, if not emotional wellbeing. We often think of wintertime as being the most difficult for older people. Indeed, there are many dangers lurking within the chill of winter, but summertime is not without its potential threats too. Though people of all ages can be at risk from sunstroke, heat exhaustion and sunburn, older people are more vulnerable and the effects of the aforementioned can be much more profound and last longer. The effects of sunburn, for example, can be 54 Á 52-55.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 14:18 Page 254 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY CARING LEAKE'S MASONRY Ltd Eve Street, Louth, Lincs LN11 0JJ Phone: 01507 604 828 leakesmasonry.co.uk • leakesmasonry@aol.com A Third Century of Stonemasonry Craftsmanship From Leake's Masonry A professional family-run business having been established in Louth for over 100 years. The risk of skin cancer can also be higher. But while sunburn in someone in their twenties can be a mild irritancy for a few days, for an older person it can be incredibly damaging and uncomfortable. As we age, we are slower to heal, with even simple issues such as bruising taking weeks (or, in some cases, months) to clear up. We simply become more fragile as we get older and so more care is needed, both for the individual themselves but also for those looking after them. A simple preventative measure such as high-factor sun cream can be a blessing. Mobility is one of the other major issues that needs to be taken into consideration when planning any kind of outdoor event for older people. Wheelchair access must be researched well ahead of any potential trip or outing. It might also be worth taking a trip yourself ahead of time to scout out the area. While the promenade along our east coast is wonderful for walking, the wind can blow up the sand making it difficult to push a wheelchair through. It’s also worth considering the proximity of healthcare facilities, should the need arise. More and more establishments have defibrillators which can literally mean the difference between life and death in an emergency. There’s dignity and wisdom in getting older, despite the curveballs the ageing process might throw. Reaching seventy and beyond rightfully deserves a celebration and, where possible, older folks should be entitled to enjoy the weather and the many activities and outings that entails – especially the Queen’s Jubilee, a literal once in a lifetime opportunity. Yet there’s a right way and a wrong way to go about it, and there’s no shame in seeking help and aid where needed. It’s simply a support to lean on to enable older folks to live the best life they’re able. © stock.adobe.com/Dmitry Naumov 52-55.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 14:18 Page 301775 711 959 www.countrycourtcare.com Spalding Common, Spalding, Lincolnshire, PE11 3AS Fenchurch House Care Home Fenchurch House provides the kind of care we’d want all of our loved ones to receive.
