With the soaring cost of living and the rise in energy costs affecting the UK, we can look back at wartime Britain and maybe take note of some of the ways that shortages and austerity were managed. Recycling is being ‘recycled’; from the days of ‘Make Do and Mend’ and ‘Dig For Victory’ to today’s everyday habit of recycling. The three ‘R’s’ of World War 2 were ‘REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE.’ Three mottos that we live by today. Everything was open to the opportunity for reuse in one form or another. Could you tell us more about the classic attitudes, mottos, and programmes that remain important and can be learned from in modern day? MAKE DO AND MEND is probably the best remembered saying and relied on people altering and repairing clothes. Tips were shared for making clothes, making fabrics last longer and patterns for adapting adult outfits into child sizes, and of course, adapting parachute silk for dresses and underwear. Everyone knew someone who had a dress made from this rare fabric. Rationing of clothing lasted until 1949 Q&A International Bomber Command Centre: Recycling World War 2 style As the county and country tackle a ‘cost of living crisis’, the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) considers what we can learn from those who tackled austerity in wartime Britain, with recycling, particularly, key both then and now. We also hear about the IBCC’s own efforts to bring in such wartime attitudes into how they themselves operate. Courtesy of the National Archives 66-67.qxp_Layout 1 19/04/2022 14:23 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 67 INTERNATIONAL BOMBER COMMAND CENTRE Q&A and saw the 1950s use more fabric than many people believed decent after the years of austerity. Additionally, ‘Dig for Victory’ was set up by the Ministry of Agriculture and saw the use of open land such as public parks, gardens and even cricket pitches for the growing of food during rationing. It was mainly vegetables, fruits, and herbs to help feed the population. People turned their own gardens into allotments which often included the keeping of rabbits and chickens as a form of free meat. During the war over 20 million victory gardens were planted. Food waste was then used to feed animals and cut down on the need for animal feeds. The call went out for scrap metal, pots and pans that were to be used for the manufacture of shelters, weapons and perhaps even a Spitfire. Many park railings were also removed and melted down. If you were to walk through London today you would note that the railings have a regular curve in them, from when they were used as stretchers during WW1, so they have been reused again, going full circle. Furthermore, paper, even like today, was recycled, being used as heating material. Paper itself was in short supply due to the lack of wood pulp. Furniture was ‘upcycled’, much like today, and found new uses in private homes or as furnishings for those that had lost their homes to the bombing. Nothing was off limits to recycling and everyone got involved with huge propaganda posters and drives to recruit people into helping their country. How has the IBCC embraced these wartime ideas? We have been trying to integrate some of these wartime elements into the International Bomber Command Centre project. We built our own Dig For Victory gardens which not only provide herbs, edible flowers, and vegetables for the café, but also provide an area to teach visitors and our learners about wartime rationing and life on the Home Front. We recycle as much waste as possible and use recycled paper throughout the offices. Our site manager, Roger, is an expert at repurposing things (which means we need a lot of storage for things that might be useful!). These are small steps but do make a contribution to reducing costs and lessening our impact on the environment.
