Butthat’d be an injustice as lithium-ionbatteries these days are far more powerfuland regenerative braking means thateach time the vehicle decelerates, orbrakes, the batteries receive a free top up. Even more ingenious in our BMW i3 isa range extender – a small enginepowering a generator to maintain thecharge of the batteries while on themove. This range extender increases thecar’s maximum range in day-to-daydriving to some 200 miles and, as thebatteries can be fast charged in only 25minutes, the world really is your oyster. My other fear stemmed from thatnagging doubt about sacrificing speed, but here’s an eye opener for you - afellow motoring correspondent reportedrecently that he raced an i3 side by sideagainst a V8 engined BMW M3, at BrandsHatch, and was amazed to see the M3struggling to keep up for the first half ofthe race. Now that’s my sort of car.As our test confirms, the i3 is very mucha drivers’ car. Very enjoyable/intuitive andthanks to its carbon fibre construction, asyou press the accelerator, the take off isthere - so if you want that punch of powerit’s available instantly. The i3 is surprisingly agile in cities andtowns and the turning circle is justamazing for parking. Its also anaccomplished performer out onmotorways and country roads thanks tothe batteries being fitted below the floor, lowering the whole centre of gravity. When we need to dart through trafficwe merely squirt the pedal and as wetake our foot off it slows down, just asresponsively, triggering theaforementioned regenerative braking(and brake lights) as it does so. My one remaining anxiety is that someEV manufacturers lease you the batteries –which seems at odds to me. Call me oldfashioned but if I’ve just bought a car, I’dlike to know I own all of it – who on earthwants to spoon out up to £80 per monthto a car manufacturer to lease batteries? On checking I discover there’s none ofthis nonsense and the i3 price tagincludes batteries which are warranted for100,000 miles or eight years. Inside, our i3 seems cavernous and theeucalyptus wood trim of our suite modeladds to the opulence, so there’s nosacrifices here either. With all the doorsopen, there’s wide, unobstructed accessto a roomy cabin, with no central pillarsand the rear seats fold down. The price for such unadulteratedpleasure starts at £30,660 on the road -less of course the government’s currentsubsidy of £5,000! But here’s theinteresting bit for company car drivers –the benefit in kind ie the tax you pay fordriving the i3 is nil! Now that’s the kindof tax bill I’m after.
