< Previous100 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWith the Lincolnshire Show dominatingattention this month, doubtless many ofus are looking forward to showing ourhorses this summer – especially after aparticularly long and dreary winter.Certainly the shows can prove veryexciting for horses and riders alike, but it’simportant not to get too over-excited andend up watching from the side-linesrather than taking part.Of course the various shows arecommitted to safety and operate to thehighest standards, but it’s still possible tohave your showing season cut short byinjury by taking unnecessary risks. Ifyou’re planning to organise a show, meanwhile, it’s important to make sureyou follow all the necessary steps.Bringing together dozens of horses cansometimes be fraught with difficulty ifyou’re not prepared. There may be more than one personwho holds a duty of care to those atshows. It is not only the organisers, butcan also be the stewards, the judges, theowner of the land the show is on, theindividual contractors and stall holdersand of course the riders and handlersthemselves. The duties can overlap. So ifyou are organising a show, you should beas clear as possible who is responsible forwhat. If this is your first season showing, it’swell worth taking time to train your horseat home as much as you can in ringcraft. No matter how placid your horse is whenyou’re riding together, the rules andregulations of showing are often a stepup and require further study.Horses, especially younger ones, will beallowed some leeway for high spirits in astrange place, but bad behaviour thatcan’t or won’t be controlled by the rideror handler will usually be penalised. In thering, leave yourself plenty of space eithergoing round or in the line-up. Then, ifyour horse misbehaves, the chances arehe will be kicking out at nothing ratherthan the next rider’s thigh.Case law shows us that if you knowyour horse kicks and you don’t takeprecautions, you could be liable for anyinjury. But the same case – the case ofJones vs Baldwin in 2010 – also warnsthat if other riders knowingly get tooclose, then there may be a defence to aclaim, particularly if the other horse is not© Shutterstock / Catwalk PhotosBestin classShowing season is upon us, so it’s vital your horses are welllooked after; whether they’re in the spotlight or not.FARM & COUNTY LINK - EQUINE100-101_Layout 1 22/05/2017 12:42 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY101FARM & COUNTY LINK - EQUINEFOR A CARING ANDPROFESSIONAL APPROACHTO ALL YOUR VETERINARY NEEDS•Pre-purchase Examinations •Endoscopy•Stables & Theatre •Tendon Scanning•Reproductive Ultrasound •Mobile Xray Unit.Estate Office, Boston RdSPILSBYTel: 01790 752227Heath Road Trad. It’s the duty of those organising the show toensure that collecting rings have sufficient space for warmups, which may include jumping and that ring stewards areaware of their duties in controlling rings and other spaces. Many stewards are now sent on training courses. Judgesshould also be aware that they do have a certain responsibilityfor the behaviour of those in the ring under their control. One of the great joys of showing is to illustrate your skills tothe public but there are obvious pitfalls when people not usedto being around horses on a regular basis get too close. Thejob for the show organiser is to identify and clearly defineareas where the public are allowed and where they aren’t.One ‘hot spot’ for this is the horsebox park. Try and keep thepublic out. In the same space, never leave horses or boxesunattended – and this avoids injury and thefts too.Properly organised shows will also have appropriate andadequate medical cover and, if it’s required, the MedicalEquestrian Association advises on this and can sometimesprovide volunteer medics from contacts.Showing can be a great pleasure but it’s worth making surethings run smoothly to avoid potential problems.© Shutterstock / Michael C. The days of erasure arepassing, as companies are finally startingto pay attention to this so-called ‘silverdemographic’ or, more specifically, theirpocketbooks. With better quality of life andhealthcare, people are living longer thanever before, leading to a lucrativedemographic. The food and hospitalityindustries, for example, predict that thenext great market to conquer is the over55s, where products and services will betailored to meet their wants and needs. Itdoesn’t take a leap of imagination either, with supplements and other vitaminsalready doing just that. One area where the older generationhas always enjoyed targeted experiencesand representation is assisted livingfacilities. As this age bracket includespeople who are either approachingretirement, have recently retired, or havebeen enjoying their post-retirement years,it’s fair to say they’ve enjoyed some R&R.Having both retired with children who’vesince flown the coop, a couple mightwant to downsize to enjoy their twilightyears. This is the beauty of assisted living, where a couple or individual can enjoythe best of both worlds. Far from the media caricature, carehomes are more than a place to dumpoff your elderly relatives. They perform animportant civic function and provide asafe and sociable environment forpotentially vulnerable people.
