Theargument used to focus on spending more time in thebedroom, though of late, experts and style guides maintainthat it should be left specifically for sleep and intimacy. Britainis gripped by a lack of sleep. One of the ways of getting morequality shut eye is to throw back the covers as soon as youawake rather than lying there and hitting snooze every fiveminutes. Some advocate that the room should be left aloneentirely during the day, that way the body and subconsciousassociate it only with sleep. We fall between both camps, as while there’s sense inensuring sleep, it seems a shame to only half enjoy a space.Home workers and freelancers have been lured away from thehome desk with coffee shops where they can have a table, space and free electricity and all for the price of a cup of java.Coffee shops are getting wise, though, and are beginning tocharge for the use of electricity etc. This will likely see a returnto home desk environments, yet not every home has the spaceor structure to accommodate an office. Better, then, to setaside a corner of the bedroom. A reclaimed writing desk or aminimalist work station can make great use of space that mightotherwise be wasted. What we will advocate, though, is plants. Our lives areincreasingly urban, so filling the house up with green leavesand flowers is a must. It’s also the perfect time of the year tostart. The benefits to mental wellbeing alone should be enoughto convince any doubters, but it’s an easy way of brighteningthe place up. Potted plants can also be moved around thehouse with ease, so you’re never tied to any one position. You may have noticed there’s been no mention as yet of thebed. As the most important part of the room, we’ve saved thebest for last. Beds come in a dizzying array of styles and designs,a choice that can sometimes seem intimidating. Homeownersare falling out of love with more minimalist fare and returning tothe rich regal beds of yesteryear. A compromise would be toadorn a simple frame with an elegant, carved woodenheadboard. More and more people are buying separateheadboards rather than forking out for an entirely new bed. With some beautiful choices out there, who can blame them?© Shutterstock / Photographee.eu 17-23_Layout 1 22/05/2017 12:59 Page 4LINCOLNSHIRETODAY21INSTALLATION:A friendlyand professional servicefrom our experienced team.DESIGN:Free home visitand design service.DISABLED:Specialists inwet room designs.OPENING TIMES:Tuesday - Friday 9am - 4pmPrivate appointmentsavailable Tuesday to Friday5pm - 8pm Saturday 10am - 3pmBeautiful bathrooms without theexpensive flannelBathroom Desires55 Queen Street, Market Rasen, Lincolnshire, LN8 3ENTel: 01673 843351www.bathroomdesires.co.ukBringing back personal one to one servicesBathroom Many a restaurant visit has seen diners check out anestablishment’s bathroom to get a fuller sense of thepremises. Chances are guests are doing the same thingwhen they visit your home. In that regard, the bathroomis a kind of litmus test, on which everything else depends. It’s worth putting in the time and effort to get the bestresults. There are numerous bathroom designs that range fromthe stripped back and modern approach, to more vintagetastes, but for something truly spectacular, curating yourown is the best bet. The pick ‘n’ mix approach can meanmixing a traditional free standing bath with flush, Spartancabinets. Either way, you’ll end up with something that’lldiffer from what the neighbours have got and set aglowing precedent for the rest of the household. The appeal of an en suite is enduring, and offers theopportunity to have differing bathroom set-ups under oneroof, meaning the shared bathroom can have more of arustic charm about it, while the suit can be ultra-modern.Jacuzzis remain a benchmark in luxury and relaxation, andhaving one in your bathroom is just the icing on the cake. In any case, colour is important, and bright, vibrantcolours have never been more popular. It doesn’t have tobe all about the blue-grey tones. There’s a whole spectrumto explore. Here in Lincolnshire, with our superb local produce and exquisite meat, it’s reallylittle wonder. If food is the heart of our culture then it servesto follow than the kitchen would be the heart of any home.Perhaps more than any other room, the kitchen is where thefamily will spend most of their time. Guests will also seek out the kitchen almost as soon asthey’re let through the door, so ensuring there’s enoughseating is a top priority. Armchairs and sofas are a morefamiliar site in kitchens, and it’s amazing how comfy seats willbring in the family. Traditional farmhouse or Mediterranean remains thefavourite styles, though there’s also a more stripped backapproach with plenty of gadgets and gizmos for the HestonBlumenthal types to indulge. As far as the kitchen is concerned, there’s no right or wrongway, blending brands and styles will still result in somethingwonderful that the whole family want to spend time in. © Shutterstock / EPSTOCK© Shutterstock / adpePhoto17-23_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:00 Page 6LINCOLNSHIRETODAY23The iconic AGA cooker hasbeen the heart of the homefor decades. This month we meet the owners, Paul and Tanya Hurst whoclearly have a passion for design and interior décor. 24-29_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:11 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY25HOMESWhen Paul and Tanya first bought theproperty, they were faced with what canonly be described as a blank canvass andthe couple set to putting their own markon the house. As Paul told us, “Theproperty had been built by a local builderwho’d then rented it out but it hadbecame a little neglected and was prettysoulless to be honest. We bought it mainly because of itslocality more than its interior appeal andrealised we were going to have to investa fair bit both I time and money, butfigured it’d be worth it in the end.” The layout on the ground floorcomprised: a reception room and adining room, a smaller ground floorroom, which had, previously, been usedas a toy room, plus of course a kitchenoff the main hallway. “Our two children,Dan and Gemma were growing up fast,”explains Tanya, “so the first task was tocreate a bit more versatility in theproperty so they could entertain theirfriends in private.” To accomplish this, the couple set to,creating two reception rooms bysectioning off an area for the diningroom in the main living room and thencreating a snug from the third room.Next they opened up the wall in thekitchen and, by adding a largeconservatory leading out to the reargarden, the family would have room forentertaining too. This also allows light toflood into the kitchen making the wholearea feel extremely spacious. 27 Á24-29_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:11 Page 224-29_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:12 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY27HOMESThese rooms have been tastefullydecorated, with no expense sparedalthough Paul insists, “We didn’t have tospend a great deal of money to getthings right, Tanya has a great eye andwith so many great home interior andfurniture stores in Lincolnshire, we werespoilt for choice.” Tanya is a prolific cook too so, as Paulexplains, “The kitchen is very much thehub of our home and that’s why we wentto town on it and why the conservatoryjust made sense to us, it allows a place tosit and chat while Tanya is putting thefinishing touches to her differentcreations and we have a choice now ofdining under the stars in theconservatory, or retreating to the maindining room in the house.” That main dining room leads off fromthe tastefully decorated, but very homely, living room with its larger than life sofasand coal effect fire, with opulent firesurround adding to the ambience. Twointernal doors open to reveal the diningarea and it’s easy to imagine meals beingenjoyed in this luxuriously appointedroom. Outside, too, there’s a large hot tubunder a gazebo where the couple canrelax, and the garden is mainly laid tolawn for ease of maintenance. A koi carppond takes pride of place at the bottomof the garden, housing an abundance offish, and I have to say, seem to be thehealthiest and most enormous specimensI’ve seen. 28 Á24-29_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:12 Page 428 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOMESUpstairs the property is equally well appointed, with fourgood sized bedrooms, each luxuriously fitted out with floorto ceiling drapes and complementing bedding. There are now wardrobes fitted to two of the rooms, which Paul created in his spare time, using space thatwould otherwise have been taken up by large pieces offurniture in each room. By ingeniously building the robesback to back in the two rooms, a wealth of storage spacehas been created without spoiling the clean lines of eachroom. The main bedroom benefits from an opulent en suiteshower room, while the other bedrooms share a familybathroom featuring an elegant roll tap bath. Everywhereyou look in this home, the attention to detail is second tonone - right down to the ornaments and light fittings, which are as unique as the property is luxurious. Eachbedroom wouldn’t look out of place in the swishiest ofboutique hotels and the overall effect is a testimony to thecouple’s efforts. Clearly, they’ve enjoyed the whole process and havecreated a home with real panache, but would they considerdoing it again? “I’m hoping we can sit back and enjoy it,”quips Paul, “and, since the children have grown up andmoved into their own homes now, we’ve got our hands fullhelping them get their places right, so I think we’ll just stayput and enjoy being empty nesters for a while; when we’renot entertaining the grandchildren of course.” 24-29_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:12 Page 5Outstanding Bespoke furniture Chesterfields in Lincoln 01673 866656 “For Quality, Style and Value” www.chesterfieldsinlincoln.co.uk Brunel House, Deepdale Lane, Neleham, LN2 2LL Open Mon - Sat 10am-5pm.
