The gardenhas erupted in a bounty of colour and scent and, forecast permitting, a sunkissed breeze will lull through the air. But you can’t sitfor too long as there’s plenty to do.You can fill any gaps in your boarders with beddingplants to give instant colour to your garden. You canreplace them with more permanent plants in the autumn ifyou wish, and one tip to make this easier is to use pots inthe bare areas filled with annuals for this summer. Then inthe autumn you will know where the bare patches are asthe pots highlight them. You can then decide exactly whatsize and colour you want in that area in the long term andplant it in the autumn ready for next spring/summer.Some bedding plants you could use are Veronica; theseproduce upright stems of shallowly cupped, pale blueflowers. Weigela bears bell-shaped flower that are pale pinkwith a darker pink reverse and has golden yellow leavesfrom spring to autumn. Honeysuckle would be a goodprovider of beautiful fragrance and Rock Rose bearsclusters of white flowers with crimson blotches at the basesof the petals and looks very striking. While you are planting, or placing pots, you can be addingand renewing mulch. This is good for the soil as it reduceswater loss and suppresses weeds. You need to make sure thesoil is moist before you put down the mulch, and make sureyou can use the mulch in your pots that you may be using tofill the gaps. There is a wide range of decorative mulchavailable which could complement your pots. If you renewmulch regularly, it will mean you will spend less timewatering and weeding and more time enjoying your garden. Even with the use of mulch, you may find some areas ofyour garden still need weeding. Use a hoe or hand pull ifthey are still small and try to keep on top of them. They willcompete with your other plants for light, nutrients andwater, and so removing them and then using a preventativemeasure such as mulch is important. You will also find that your lawn needs mowing at leastonce a week at this time of year, unless you have had theforesight to have artificial grass installed. It is preferable to cutit twice a week if possible but mow in a different directionEd Fuller from Fullers Forestryand Landscaping reveals thesecret to relaxing in the gardenthis summer. The trick is, puttingin some hard work beforehand. This will ensure that the grass is cut well each time,as if you mow in the same direction every cut the grass beginsto grow in that direction and the mower blades will not cut itas well. You could also trim the lawn edges when you havemowed the grass. I think this makes all the difference to theappearance of a garden. To keep your lawn health you can useliquid fertiliser, and make sure you follow the instructions. Deadheading flowers regularly is also a task that needs tobe carried out regularly. With many plants, the floweringperiod can be extended considerably if old flowers areremoved as soon as they fade. It will prevent the plantsenergy going into the production of seeds and channel it intonew growth and flower later in the summer and autumn. Thisis true of perennials, repeat-flowering roses and hardy andhalf-hardy annuals. Deadheading lupins and delphiniums astheir flowers fade will increase the chances of further bloomsalthough they will not be as spectacular as the first flush. Youcan also be cutting the foliage of bulbs and if you can liftovercrowded clumps now and divide them so they can spendthe rest of the summer re-establishing.If you have a veg patch then now is the time to be plantingout runner beans, planning tomatoes outside and sowingoriental vegetables and salad vegetables. You need to justkeep an eye out for cabbage while butterfly caterpillars. Theywill be hatching out now and can cause a lot of damage ad soensure you methodically inspect the undersides of the leavenof all of your brassicas.Once all of these jobs are done, make sure you do have a sitdown outside and enjoy the wildlife and nature around you.Around thegarden• Plant out annual summer bedding plants now therisk of frost has passed• Plant up containers, hanging baskets and planters• Pinch out the tips of Fuchsias to encourage moreflowers• As soon as your sweet peas start to flower, keeppicking them to encourage more blooms• Harvest salad crops and re-sow every 2 weeks fora constant supply of tasty leaves• Start to prune your plum or cherry trees now• Protect any developing fruits from birds andsquirrels by placing netting around your plants• Use water butts as much as you can to wateryour plants• Keep removing blanketweed from your pond toallow the plants and fish room to breathe.© Shutterstock / Romolo Tavani38-39_Layout 1 22/05/2017 12:28 Page 2Next >
