< Previous50 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYbeaten trackWe begin at Haverholme Lock, beforeventuring on to Ewerby and Evedon andthen rejoin the navigation at Holdingham. As tempting as it might be to follow thepath alongside the river by the elegantHaverholme Bridge, which itself datesback to 1893, we take an alternate route, which takes us in a full circle convenientlybringing us back to this point, to retrieveour parked car.Reader’s might be interested to knowthat Haverholme lies between two rivers -the Old and New Slea. Cistercian monksformed a priory here in 1137 but foundthe land a little swampy so relocated toLouth Park. Thus in 1139 the site came tobe offered to Gilbert of Sempringham toestablish a Gilbertine house. Financiallypoor, the grateful Gilbertinesuncomplainingly remained until theDissolution in 1538.Subsequently the priory became privateproperty, having various owners who overthe years altered and extended it. Finallyit came into the possession of the Finch-Hatton family, the Earls of Winchelsea.Among their more eccentric members, one kept a tame lion in the drawingroom. In the early 20th Century anotherfamily member lived in Kenya and wasinvolved with Karen Von Blixen the authorof the book ‘Out of Africa’.However in 1920, the Finch-Hatton’ssold the estate killing all the deer in thesurrounding park on Boxing Day 1926.On our walk we can see the remnants ofHaverholme Priory overlooking the estate. At Ewerby, St Andrew’s spire towersover the village green. It was a markettown in mediaeval times and there aresome quaint thatched cottages, a local innand a former methodist chapel of 1879.While, at Evedon the ancient St. Mary’schurch, leans considerably due tounderlying clay that has subsided. Along the approach lane, a l6th CenturyManor House can be seen as well as anenormous 1915 water tower, which hasbeen transformed into a quirky privateresidence. There’s also the Sleaford Navigation, which opened in 1794 and linked thetown with the River Witham. The term“navigation” rather than canal is usedhere to describe the straightening anddeepening of a pre-existing waterway. That was the so-called New River Slea, even though it dated back to the MiddleAges, when the old river was diverted topower watermills. And, in the garden on the oppositebank, a 1790’s octagonal toll collector’sbooth is a unique fragment of Navigationheritage. The mill here has been disusedsince the late l8th Century. We then circle back around toHaverholme lock - one of seven on thenavigation - which had the highest rise atjust under ten feet. When the navigationclosed, the lock was roofed over to makea boathouse and the old winchmachinery nearby may relate to this time.THE ROUTEAfter parking in the designated area bythe bridge, we head along the road.Don’t cross the bridge – just continueround a right hand bend and in anotherquarter of a mile, just beyond the Lodge,we take the signed field path off to theleft. Off theOff theIn the fast paced world in which we live, there seems little time to enjoy the true beauty of the county, which is a shame as there’s some really great hidden gems all around us. Each month, we ditch the car and explore some of the more rural areas of the county, and this monthwe’ve chosen Haverholme, Ewerby and Evedon which offers us another unrivalled opportunity to enjoynature at its best.50-51_Layout 1 22/05/2017 12:30 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY51Heading towards the woods on the skylinewe aim for a point just right of a dip in thetreeline. Cross a track at a waymark, thensome rough grass to a footbridge andthrough the trees. Next, we walk 200 yardsdown to another footbridge and then look fora line of bushes, more or less ahead, acrossthe next field. Aiming just left of these, wecontinue to another footbridge. Veer rightacross the corner of the next field to reach awaymark in a hedge gap. Now veer left, almost towards Ewerby church, to afootbridge at a lane.Turning left through Ewerby we pass boththe church and inn, then once out of thevillage we keep ahead at the junction. After afurther quarter of a mile we take the signedtrack, on the right, following it to a junctionwith a three-way footpath sign. Now we takea left. From a zig-zag waymark we maintainour direction in the adjacent field to anotherwaymark, then turn right to reach a lanenear Evedon. Turning left in the village wekeep ahead at both road junctions. We enterthe ‘Through Road’ into the churchyard. We continue down the stoney lane on theright, over a footbridge at the Old River Sleato reach Holdingham Lock on theNavigation and there turn right. Just beyondthe next lock is a road and bridge. Crossingonto a permissive path on the opposite bankand the navigation is now on our right. At agarden, the path departs leftwards, to a lanewhere turning right brings us to anotherpath by a fence, rejoining the navigation.Turning left we simply continue toHaverholme where footbridges on the rightcross both a sluice and the lock andterminates back at the car park by thebridge.FACTFILESTART: Haverholme Bridge carpark.
