It takes aminiscule amount of pressure to pierce theskin, or myriad other outside forces to wreckand ravage the body. That’s all withouttaking the body’s own tendency to generateillness and fall prey to conditions too manyto count. Medicine is at a critical juncture, with concepts once a darling of speculativefiction now becoming reality. That assumesthat the more modern a thing is, the betterit inherently is. Anyone who’s listened topop music of late will know that’s simply notthe case. Practitioners and believers of holisticmedicine are often viewed as caricatures inthe mainstream, relegated to an image ofsandal wearing, soy fancying hippies with farout dress sense and hard left politics. Now,there’ll be no more of that sort of thing, thank you. Those interested in the holisticbranch of medicine are as varied a bunch ofpeople as you could possibly hope to meet. The negativity is in the eye of the cynic. 66-69_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:05 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY67HEALTH & FITNESS© Shutterstock / Andrey_Popov69 Ácupboard. Healthcare is a similarquandary. The NHS, fragile and fadingthough it is, is the keystone of ourphysical and emotional wellbeing.Though excessive delays for beds, exhausted doctors and a general disarrayhave done much to dispel the public’sfaith in the Service, it is as emblematic ofbeing British as The Beatles, coastalretreats and tolerance (apparently). What detractors might miss is thatholistic therapies aren’t faddish, psychosomatic perhaps, but certainlybeneficial. Massage therapy falls underthis banner, and you need only speak toan injured sportsman to hear the manybenefits of massage. Anyone who’s eversuffered the gnawing pain of an ear acheor infection will likely have lit an earcandle, another therapy that falls underthe holistic banner. It’s more than simplyrepairing or rejuvenating the body, focussing as much on the mind andoverall wellbeing than a quick fix. Once seen but never spoken about, mental health has thrown free its shacklesand fled into the public consciousness. For those suffering with depression, anxiety or any other mental illnesses, simply living can be a lonely anddebilitating experience. Depression, inparticular, is especially cruel in the way itcasts a lengthening shadow over aperson, pushing them deeper and deeperinto a black hole of despair, desperationand, finally, nothingness. It strips awaythe layers of a personality, leaving anindividual numb. We’re not knockingantidepressants, far from it, but for somesufferers, they only exacerbate symptomsand create new ones in the process.Holistic options open up a whole newavenue to explore, one which can beoverseen by a GP or qualified healthcarepractitioner. Some of the best holisticpractices will often boast their own© Shutterstock / Monika WisniewskaTake Chinese medicine, for example.Modern medicine alone can’t undothousands of years of evidence andlongevity, but should rather build upon it.It’s interesting to note that more and morebreakthroughs are rooted in traditionalmedicines. While we’re not saying thesetreatments are any better (or less) thantheir modern counterparts, though it doesoffer an alternative. And that’s the crucialword to bear in mind. Holistic medicine isan alternative and, using the generalelection as an apt metaphor, an alternativeparty might not have all the answers or thebest policies, but those it does possess maybe heads and shoulders above itscounterparts. It’s important to keep perspective onthis sort of thing. It’s only over the last fivedecades that Britain has become asmorgasbord of food culture. There was atime when olive oil was sold in chemists, now it’s difficult to conceive of a kitchenwithout a bottle on the countertop or66-69_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:05 Page 2THERAPIES & CLASSESORCHARD BARN NATURAL BEAUTYPop in and have a look....we are open Monday - Friday 9am - 6pm and Saturday 9.30 - 1.30pm -Regular Pilates & Yoga Classes -daytime and evening classes, see website for timetable *New extra Monday Yoga class 5pm and 6.30pm* -ArmotherapyMassage, Reiki,Reflexology & Lymphatic Drainage - Womans Health Clinic & Gut Clinic with Dr Sally Moorcroft - Medical Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine & Homeopathy -Skin Clinic - Natural Nail Care with manicure and pedicure -Dr Hauschka Treatments- Facials - WaxingOrchard Barn Station Road Stallingborough DN41 8AJ 01472 884834 www.orchardbarn.co.ukSHOP- Gluten free food - High grade supplements - Natural toiletries & Cosmetics - Yoga clothing and equipment - Gift Vouchers - *NEW Range of Pet Supplements - Natural Household products - Natural Skincare RangeEVENTSExciting schedule of events, including: Retreat Days Pamper Days Workshops & Health Seminars Please see our website for full details www.orchardbarn.co.uk66-69_Layout 1 22/05/2017 13:05 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY69HEALTH & FITNESSqualified staff with ample experience in dealing with mentalhealth issues. Contemporary and holistic treatments can, of course, be usedin tandem. For depression, this could be the best option. Recentresearch have shown that regular yoga may not have an instantbenefit for suffers, but the accumulative effect can be highlybeneficial. Coupled with a treatment of antidepressants, and asufferer may be well on their way to a more balanced brain. Perhaps the presiding image of holistic therapy is the muchmisunderstood practice of acupuncture. Needles in generalconjure the cold clammy hands and nausea of childhoodinjections, though the reality of acupuncture is purelytherapeutic. Devised from ancient Chinese tradition, acupuncturesees fine needles inserted into specific parts of the body, stimulating sensory nerves under the skin and in the muscle, or,keeping things spiritual, chakras. Chakras are the seven centresof spiritual power in the human body and crop up frequentlyacross holistic medicine. For those paying attention to the 2016 Olympics, one mighthave noticed the scarlet circles appearing on athlete’s bodies.Hot cupping was quickly on the lips and social media feeds ofpeople the world over. It involves heated cups placed overspecific areas of the body, which forms a vacuum and drawsblood up through the skin. Athletes swore it did wonders fortheir post-event recovery and practitioners hold it high regard. To caution oneself off from holistic therapies is to deny accessto emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing. It’s not any betteror less than modern medicine, but it does offer an alternative or,better yet, a means to supplement other forms of healthcare andwellbeing. Surely, that’s something we should all be advocating?© Shutterstock / M. Kirchner0%FinanceAvailableI DON’T RIDE AN EBIKETO ADD DAYSTO MY LIFE.
