In Britain, the SUV offers petrol and diesel engines for different powertrain combinations and four configurations: Sport, Longitude, Limited - and Trailhawk, offering Trail Rated 4x4 traction. Having driven the Limited 4x4 2.0 Multijet-II model, we reckon the Compass is a compelling proposition. Why? Because it delivers open-air freedom and an array of safety technologies. What’s more, you’re assured of a comfortable and connected driving experience on or off the beaten track. Volvo XC60 We recently drove the XC60 in T8 Twin Engine AWD R-Design Pro Automatic guise. The mid-sized SUV is a plug-in hybrid, fitted with a 2.0-litre petrol engine that powers the front wheels. Then there’s an electric motor at the rear driving the back wheels – and all this is joined up to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Looks-wise, the XC60 is very like its larger XC90 sibling. But the more compact dimensions make the smaller Volvo even more compelling, not to mention easier to manoeuvre. The SUV is predictable and undemanding to drive swiftly, with 0- 62mph arriving in 5.5 seconds. The Swedish machine’s steering is accurate, and the car feels nicely balanced in the corners. The XC60 is hushed and steady on the motorway, making it a soothing mile- muncher. It’s also an economical cruising machine – with a staggering 134.5mpg possible – but only if you do your damnedest to make the most of that petrol and electric mix. Cupra Ateca Cupra is SEAT’s fresh performance sub- marque, and the Cupra Ateca is the maiden model to bear that badge. The fun SUV comes with a four-wheel- system and a mighty 300ps engine. It’s also got 19-inch alloys, a quad exhaust system, and a body kit. It comes with an impressive array of spec too: an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system comes as standard in all but the entry-level and our test car, the Exclusive, with its 1.0 litre turbo engine matched to a six speed auto transmission, came with Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring which enables you to use your phone’s media streaming and navigation apps through the car’s built-in 8” colour touch screen, leather style interior, reversing camera, cruise control, LED driving lamps and projector headlamps, USB mobile phone charging function, steering wheel mounted audio controls, three different power assisted steering modes which lightens the steering for inner city work and firms up the steering for motorway driving, then there’s air conditioning, rear parking sensors, Bluetooth phone integration, trip computer, Immobiliser and 17” alloy wheels. Incredibly, all this brings the model we tested in at just £18,340 OTR, including metallic paint at £545, and given that this is the range topping version with automatic transmission, those with more limited budgets will be pleased to learn there are more economical versions too. MG is a brand with a tremendous heritage thanks to its sporting exploits over the last century and is one of the few marques you can own and drive without having to pay a premium for the privilege. The ZS is a prime example of what we can expect from MG since being taken over by new owners, China’s SAIC Motor. The company have worked hard to retain the heritage of the brand and the ZS is a good example of how the company is writing the next chapter in its history. The compact crossover sector is a huge market these days and the ZS should do extremely well as it’s practical, affordable and well-equipped, plus its very spacious inside with plenty of leg and headroom to accommodate occupants in the front; and rear for that matter. The seats come with plenty of adjustment to get comfortable and the controls are easy to reach and laid out in LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 105 COUNTY MOTORING A roomy boot of 448-litres provides enough space with the seats up for sports enthusiasts/hobbyists to fit everything in and, with the back seats flipped down, that space grows to a massive 1,375 litres. Behind the wheel, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol is certainly no slouch, 0-60mph in around 12 seconds isn’t going to break any records but is plentiful these days and as it’s particularly sprightly in the 50- 70mph range this makes overtaking effortless. Fuel wise the MG ZS is said to deliver 45mpg. The ZS suspension seems good at soaking up the countless bumps and potholes around Lincolnshire and there’s very little outside noise emanating into the cockpit which is good considering its elevated position. Another seriously great thing about the MG ZS is that the company seem confident enough to provide a seriously generous warranty of seven years or 80,000 miles. Personally, I can’t think of a manufacturer that offers anywhere near the same and if you sell the car in a few years, this warranty extends to the next buyer, so that should certainly help keep resale prices high. All in all, we think you’ll love the MG ZS. Test Car courtesy of Charles Warner MG, Outer Circle Road, Lincoln MG has caught the compact crossover sector a bit unawares with their new ZS, a very well equipped and yet affordable SUV/crossover with more cabin space than say a Qashqai and with the legendary MG badging to boot.
