When you’re having to slather on the sunscreen, nobody wants to contend with heavy layers of makeup or weighty hairstyles. 2022 is seeing a continuation in focus on good skincare over makeup for a natural, “glazed doughnut” look. For hair, 90’s is certainly back, with a strong focus on soft waves and choppy bobs. The good news? The 2022 focus is on effortlessness, meaning many of the current trends are easy to achieve and maintain. Skincare Skincare continues to be at the forefront of the public’s mind in 2022, with the rise of so-called “skinimalism.” Shunning multi-step routines, a la the 10-step Korean regime which took rise around 2016, people want their skincare to work harder with less effort to achieve targeted results, such as lessening fine lines, hydrate the skin, and reduce acne. Combined with this is the trend for “condensed beauty” - brands discovering new ways to amplify the results and efficiency of beauty formulas, while reducing product waste. This includes incorporating sunscreen into complexion products, fully recyclable packaging, and reducing water-based products. In this spirit, for complexion, a tinted moisturiser will suffice. This will even out the skin, and concealer can then be applied in a “pinpoint” fashion to cover the areas which require a little more attention. Concealing in this way will give a more natural appearance, achieving that coveted your skin but better look. Statement blush is also contributing to the theme of glowing skin this year. Bright peaches and candy pinks can be applied by using less product on your brush, worked deep into the bristles to give soft washes of colour. Start at the apple of the cheek, then sweep upwards to the temple. Adding some in the crease of the eye will give you a beachy glow. Apply less at first, then add more if you want more impact. Another trend is tantouring – wherein self-tanning products are used in place of harsh bronzer to create a naturally sun kissed, yet chiselled, appearance. Mix a few drops of tanning serum into your daily moisturiser, then apply to the nose, cheekbone, jawline, and forehead. Using a tanning serum will last all day. If you’re looking for something a little more exciting, you’re in luck with the latest trend for statement eyeshadow. With the success of TV’s Euphoria and the rise of Y2K fashion, you’ll undoubtedly be seeing bold eyeshadow looks everywhere. This is very easily achieved, as you can simply place your desired colour across your eyelid. For maximum impact, use a high- density eyeshadow brush and pat on the colour, rather than sweep. For a festival feel, rhinestones can be added simply by placing a dot of latex free lash glue and allowing it to get tacky. Then gently press on a gem of your choice. This can be very easily mixed with the minimal complexion trend to create a beautiful, ethereal look, which is extremely wearable no matter your age. If you’re hesitant to go for some of the bolder colours, start out with pastel shades such as light pinks, purples, and champagnes. Keeping up with the sun June means warmer days and constant sunlight – we see what trends are in and how to adapt your style. 56 Á 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 20/05/2022 14:18 Page 1© stock.adobe.com/Martinan LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 55 HAIR & BEAUTY 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 20/05/2022 14:18 Page 256 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY HAIR & BEAUTY Hair The theme of sustainability in beauty translates across to haircare. Solid shampoos have been a staple for a while now, with Garnier being the latest to launch their version in 2021. The focus is on using a few, sustainable products to achieve an effortless look. In this vein, shorter styles are re- emerging, with takes on the 90’s bob being a popular choice. This is a mid- length bob, or “lob.” Think mid-length for this cut, similar to the chic “lob,” short for longer bob, that swept the 90’s scene. To freshen it for 2022 however, cuts are a little blunter for a slightly edgier, more modern feel. To achieve this, ask your hairdresser for something above the shoulder and below the chin. These are low maintenance, and using a little salt spray, give that French girl, or beachy wave that gives that chic bed- head vibe! Whether you have fine or thick hair, everyone can enjoy this style. If you prefer a little more length, choppy layered cuts (think Jennifer Aniston in Friends) are back for 2022. To achieve this, ask for short angles to frame the face, and long layers around the back. This gives a bouncy freshness to your look, even when air dried. So, if you’re looking to lay off the blow driers, curlers, or straighteners, this is the do for you! This style works best for those with medium to thick hair. Those with fine hair certainly can pull it off, but a little more styling may be required to conceal any separation in the haircut. This can be achieved by adding some loose waves, randomly curled around the head. Once cooled, run your fingers through your hair for a more natural look. Or, if you want some extra bounce, give your hair a more traditional blowout. Another TV-inspired look is the elegant bun with loose tendrils hanging around the face, so reminiscent of Bridgerton. Achieving the double feat of both getting hair out of your face during hot weather, and an easy day-to-night look, buns are a classic that’s here to stay. Sleeked, straight back buns are superb for the office and give that model off duty feel. Placed higher on the head, they could be tousled to give that messy bun look, or more polished for a 60’s appearance. The bun is a versatile, yet simple, style that you can play around with to make it truly yours. 2022 styles show that you don’t have to make a huge effort to look fabulous. In fact, embracing your natural beauty is encouraged this year. There is still plenty of room to experiment if that’s your thing, with bold colours on the eyes and bouncy curls. This year really feels like a year where you can be you, and that’s truly beautiful. © stock.adobe.com/ladie_c 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 20/05/2022 14:18 Page 3TODAY! Highlighting the fact that more than 100 people in the UK start to lose their sight each day, they are promoting the importance of the earliest possible diagnosis. With an ADVANCED Eye Examination being much more than a new pair of spectacles or contact lenses, the practice has invested in the most advanced diagnostic technology so early changes in the eye can be detected, long before there are any obvious symptoms: this allows for early treatment and better results. With the latest SPECTRALIS 4D high definition Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging technology, Dr. Janjua is now able to identify and monitor the smallest change. The HEIDELBERG SPECTRALIS 4D HD OCT ADVANCED Eye Examination is the same instrument that can be found at some of the best hospital eye departments including the Queens Medical Centre in Nottingham and Manchester’s Royal Eye Hospital. It uses a patented eye-tracking system that allows Dr. Janjua to identify those at risk of eye disease more easily. The tracking system allows the 3D scan to be placed in exactly the same place (to one micron which is a 1/100th of a hair) at each visit, giving a true 4D view of change over time. This helps to reveal eye disease which may not yet be noticeable by the patient or detectable with a basic eye exam. Fast, painless and non-contact, the scan does not include any bright flashes of light or puffs of air, and takes place in seconds. “We are really excited to offer our patients this new 4D HD OCT advanced eye examination,” said Dr. Janjua “Using the SPECTRALIS technology, we can examine tiny details that help us detect eye disease at the earliest stages, reducing the risk of sight loss and improving our patient’s lives.” Common eye diseases can impair vision and cause permanent vision loss if not caught at an early stage. The best preventative measure to protect good vision is an annual ADVANCED EYE EXAMINATION, and treatment when needed. 0#SJFOT0QUJDJBOTBSFEFEJDBUFEUPQSPWJEJOH QBUJFOUTXJUIUIFIJHIFTURVBMJUZPQIUIBMNJDMFOTFT BOEOPXUIFNPTUUFDIOPMPHJDBMMZBEWBODFEDBSF 'PSNPSFJOGPSNBUJPODPOUBDUVTBUPS PSWJTJUXXXPCSJFOTPQUJDJBOTDPVL Professional Eyewear Styling Service Low Vision Aids and Specialists lenses for Macular Degeneration (AMD), Glaucoma and More Dry Eye and Blepharitis Treatment UK Optician Awards runners-up 2018 & 2019! If the idea of shorts and bikinis fills you with dread, you’re not alone. Research suggests that people feel worse about their bodies after Covid has had us working from home for the last 2 years. In the wake of this, a new approach to dieting has come to the fore - intermittent fasting. This no-fuss, flexible way of dieting encourages positivity rather than punishment, and allows dieters to fit it in around an often-hectic life schedule. The uniqueness of intermittent fasting is the focus on when you can eat, whereas most diets focus on what you can eat. When intermittent fasting, you only eat during a certain time frame. Fasting for a certain period each day or eating just one meal for a few days a week, can help your body burn fat. Believe that the human body is better suited to going without food than many believe. In prehistoric times, humans were hunters and gatherers who learnt to survive (and, ultimately, thrive) without eating for long periods of time. You can choose an approach to intermittent fasting that suits you, but all are based on choosing regular time periods to eat and fast. For instance, you could select to eat during an eight-hour period © stock.adobe.com/SASITHORN It’s the latest and, according to some, easiest way to lose weight and boost your health, but how far can skipping a meal really go? fact or fad? 58-59.qxp_Layout 1 20/05/2022 14:19 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 59 per day, and fast for the remainder. Alternatively, you could eat only one meal a day for 2 days a week. You can choose based on which fits better into your lifestyle. Intermittent fasting works by encouraging the body to use its fat reserves. After hours without food, the body goes through “metabolic switching,” wherein sugar stores are depleted, and the body starts to burn fat. This contrasts with the typical Western diet of three meals a day, plus snacks. Every time a person eats, they are using those calories and never burning their fat resources. This less rigid approach to weight loss may be the key to success. Research shows that severely restrictive diets with a focus on negative reinforcement and self- punishment for straying are less likely to result in long term weight loss. Finding a solution that is tailored to you and your lifestyle, that you are comfortable with, and that can be maintained over a long period is far more likely to result in success. It is important to seek the advice of your doctor prior to beginning intermittent fasting, as some long-term health conditions such as diabetes or blood sugar issues can be exacerbated by this practice. Those with a history of disordered eating should also avoid this practice, as well as those under 18, and those who are pregnant and breastfeeding. Once you have the go- ahead, the rules are extremely simple to follow. Dieticians agree that daily approaches are the easiest to begin with, and the easiest to stick to long term. One common approach is the 16/8 regime, wherein you eat for an eight- hour window and fast for the other sixteen hours of the day. A different method, known as the 5:2 approach, involves maintaining a normal eating schedule for five days a week. For the other two days, you limit yourself to one 500–600 calorie meal. An example would be if you chose to eat normally on every day of the week except Mondays and Thursdays, which would be your one- meal days. Whilst you can adopt a more extreme approach, such as 24 – 48 hour © stock.adobe.com/juliamikhaylova fasting periods, this should be approached with caution and could be dangerous. This could cause the body to go into starvation mode and actually encourage your body to start storing more fat, slowing down progress. Research shows that you need to stick with the regime for two to four weeks before the body becomes accustomed to intermittent fasting. It is normal to feel hungry or cranky whilst your body is adjusting, and it’s important to distract yourself when this happens. Generally, those who make it through the adjustment period tend to stick with intermittent fasting, because they notice they feel better. During the fasting period, you are encouraged to drink plenty of water. Zero calorie beverages such as black tea and coffee are also permitted. Whilst the weight loss benefits are the most obvious, intermittent fasting has been linked to a myriad of health- boosting benefits beyond weight-loss. Studies discovered that intermittent fasting boosts working memory in animals and verbal memory in adult humans. Organ health has been linked to intermittent fasting. It has improved blood pressure and resting heart rates as well as other heart-related measurements. Furthermore, in animals, intermittent fasting reduced tissue damage during surgery and improved results. Intermittent fasting could also improve gym performance. Young men who fasted for 16 hours showed fat loss while maintaining muscle mass. Furthermore, mice who were fed on alternate days showed better endurance in running. It is important to remember that during your eating periods, eating normally does not equate to going crazy. Packing your feeding times with high-calorie junk food and treats is unlikely to help you lose weight or get healthier. Yet, the beauty of intermittent fasting is that a range of different foods can be eaten and should be enjoyed. Researchers advise that eating with others can boost meal satisfaction and support physical and mental wellbeing. Apps like Fastic provide excellent advice and meal suggestions to help break your fast in the most nutritious way possible. Experts cite the Mediterranean diet as a good blueprint of what to eat, both for those undergoing intermittent fasting, and those eating regularly. A diet rich in whole grains, leafy greens, healthy fats, and lean protein will undoubtedly set you on the right track. Professionals advise that intermittent fasting should be approached as a lifestyle change, rather than a diet, to reap the full benefits. Whilst intermittent fasting will get you on the way to your desired physique, the long-term benefits of intermittent fasting could improve your life well beyond aesthetics.
