Based at RAF Waddington andunencumbered by our rural road network or heavy traffic, theservice can reach awkward and hard-to-reach areas much fasterthan a ground crew. The team of paramedics responds toemergencies across both counties and help save lives every day.Paul Smith, the latest pilot to be taken on by the service hasyears of experience within the Air Force as an aircraft engineerand learned to fly himself on what is termed a ‘self-improvalroute’. Although all his pilot work has been done as a civilian,he says he is excited to be part of the Lincolnshire AirAmbulance team.“I’ve worked with the police before, but once you get towork within the services, police and ambulance work go handin hand.”So far, Paul has been impressed with the sheer distances thatcan be covered by the ambulance, “We’ve dealt with a lot ofhorse riding accidents and farm machinery accidents so far, road traffic accidents are common, but to reach these peoplein remote places is why we’re in the air.“Speed kills on the road, so it’s great we can get into theareas fast to help where we can. One thing we can do is takethe patient to the most appropriate hospital for their injuries, rather than simply the nearest. We recently got called out anda toddler had effectively drowned, thanks to our on-boarddefibrillator, we were able to shock his heart twice on the flightto hospital and I’m glad to say that child is still alive today. Weare one of the only services in the country to have an on-boarddefibrillator, which is a great piece of equipment to have.“The people of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire should beproud, to be willing to pay out of their own pockets to help ussave lives is amazing. The paramedics we work with areequally incredible, I’m just a pilot, I go where I’m told to, it isa privilege to be part of this service.”LINCOLNSHIRETODAY65LINCOLNSHIRE AIR AMBULANCEThe service depends on your donations, to find out more, logon to www.ambucopter.org.uk . Not thatshe is looking at selling it - instead, she wants couples to feel that it is theperfect place to hold and celebratetheir weddings.Stoke Hall, which was built by thepowerful Smith banking family in1812, is Nottinghamshire’s newestcivil wedding venue following Dianeand husband Bryan’s decision to jointhe small number of owners whomake their stately homes available tothe public. The decision to open Stoke Hall’s bigwooden doors to wedding couples wastaken around eight years ago, whenDiane realised that therewas a shortage ofinteresting places to get married in.“One of my relatives didn’t want toget married at our local registry office,so they ended up getting married inScotland because there was nothingelse for them here,” she said. “That’s what first made me think ofhosting weddings here. Then, when Ispoke to our local registrar, DianeWebster, she told us that Stoke Hallalready had everything required to begranted a Civil Ceremony Licence.”When the couple bought Stoke Hallit was in a poor state. Interior wallswere collapsing and ceilings wereabout to fall in, a legacy of water thathad leaked into the property fordecades. Mindful of history and determinedto restore the hall to its former glory,Diane and Bryan employed a skilledteam of local craftsmen to help themachieve their vision. Now, on stepping into the hall, thetone is set by the Grand ReceptionHall with its 360 degree cantileveredstaircase and light streaming downfrom the cupola above. Inside the Old Library hangs a 17thCentury Belgian tapestry, below a100ft long Roman frieze painted byartist Wayne Thomas England. Closeby is a secret door, lined with falsebooks, which leads through to theMusic Room. Stoke Hall’s landscaped groundsboast two redwood trees and anancient sweet chestnut tree, but thejewel in its crown is its Secret Garden, which is enclosed on all four sidesbetween the hall and the carriagecourt.Gardening is Bryan’s passion and hestarted drawing up the plans very earlyon in the restoration process.Plants were sourced from prestigiousnurseries and the result is anenchanting space filled with exoticplants, palm trees and bamboos, whereguests can wander round, overwhelmed by colour and scent.Stoke Hall hosted its first weddinglast year and more are scheduled for2012. Couples can be married in anyof the Hall’s four licensed rooms andthey are all used afterwards for gueststo relax in and enjoy themselves. If not, we’ve got some ideas for you and theentire family to get out there and have fun with, afterall, Lincolnshire is packed with stuff to do!Whether it’s a day out with the family, or a cultural night forcouples, Lincolnshire has plenty going on for all tastes. One thingthe county has always been famous for is its proud tradition forcountry shows. Of course the biggest show of them all is just aboutto occur at the time of writing and as we all know, the LincolnshireShow attracts people from all over the county and beyond, but thesummer doesn’t end there. Next up is one we all look forward to, the Waddington Air Show.Featuring stunt teams from across the country and worldwide, it’salways a marvel, not just for those attending, but for residents wholive in the flight path too. Lincoln’s skies are filled with the sound ofjet engines and the smell of aviation fuel is a familiar and welcomemusk for that weekend. This year, we won’t see the return of theVulcan Bomber as it has suffered some technical difficulties in recentweeks, however there’s more than enough to keep aviationenthusiasts occupied elsewhere. Billed as ever as the RAF’s ‘premier aviation spectacular’ it featuresa packed programme of flight displays that are sure to wow thecrowds. Intended to raise awareness of the RAF and its work, displaysfrom the Red Arrows, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the RAFFalcons freefall parachute team and many more military and civilianaircraft from the UK; it is also heavily supported by military forcesfrom around the world. Ground displays include 2 exhibitionhangars, funfair, classic cars display, pleasure flying and much more! Of particular note this year is a display team from the Black Eagles, the aerobatic display team from Korea. Part of the Republic of KoreaAir Force, it is their first time in UK airspace and it promises to be anincredible performance. Our good friends The Blades will also beflying on the day, so keep an eye out for their distinctive blueaircraft as well of course as the return of the Red Arrows.
