Dave Bunker and Michelle Collins are twoof the town’s seven Police Community Support Officers, andthey tell us what they love about Skegness…A hazy description like ‘grey-haired and elderly’ doesn’tsound like much information with which to find a 75-year-old man lost amongst the fun-hunting crowds ofholidaymakers in a Lincolnshire seaside town – but it’s all ina day’s work for PCSOs Dave Bunker and Michelle Collins. They’re used to that kind of call, which presents a similarsituation at the other end of the age scale when a child getslost in the crowds on the beach. That can happen four or fivetimes a day at the height of the season, when, at World Cuptime, they’ve been given a description of ‘five-year-old,wearing an England shirt’.Every morning brings new challenges somewhere in thetown, and that’s what former travel agent Michelle lovesabout it. She said: “When we come to work we don’t knowwhat’s going to happen. I love coming to work; I love myjob.”Dave feels the same. He said: “I love everything aboutSkegness has no traditional pier thesedays, but the entertainment you’dexpect to find there is still available atthe Embassy TheatreSkegness PCSOs Dave Bunker and Michelle Collins. There’sa different pace of life from the towns andcities we grew up in.”In the summer, pounding the Skegnessbeat can see then looking for the lost, offering crime prevention advice and beingon the front line of a multi-agencyapproach to resolving issues. “Changingfrom winter to summer is like flicking aswitch, which happens on Good Friday,”said Dave. “Suddenly all the visitors areback with us. Then it goes quiet for amonth, and then they’re all back and we’rebusy for the summer.“We work with the local authority andhousing agencies, the ‘regular’ police andsocial services; whichever’s appropriate to the situation inhand,” said Dave.PSCOs in Skegness provide cover on a shift systemnominally from 8am until 10pm during the week, and until6pm at weekends. “But we never sign off if we’re involvedwith an incomplete job. How could you ‘clock off’ in themiddle of a search for a missing child? You have to stay atwork and help to find the child, working ass part of a teamwith the regular officers and the East Lindsey CCTV peopleuntil the child’s found,” said Michelle. This kind of dedication must be a weight off the mind forthe thousands of families that visit Skegness over the summerevery year. There’s plenty to bring them to the town as well,as well as a promenade full of attractions and a great view ofthe resort, the town will keep everyone busy. Having shakenoff its old reputation as ‘bracing’ the town prides itself as anentertainment spot, with the Embassy Theatre showing someof the best live acts from around the world on a regular basis, there’s plenty to keep adults and children alike entertained.Whether its comedy, musicals or kids’ entertainment, therewill be something on in the season that hits the spot for anytaste. There’s also the thrill seekers catered for with FantasyIsland, which features rides and attractions for the wholefamily, with its fair share of wild rollercoasters and moresedate rides for smaller children, what visit to Skeggy wouldbe complete without a few rides? For the petrolheads, there’s also plenty to keep youinterested as well as appealing to the family, SkegnessStadium is a great day out, with stock cars and bangers racinground the track, the smell of petrol and the roar of theengines means it is packed out all season. Watch out for theMonster Truck shows as well, there’s special events litteredthroughout the summer, involving car crushing and evenmotorcross stunt teams.Take a brief sojourn down the road to Wainfleet, a quaintmarket town nearby and beer fans will be able to take a tourof one of Lincolnshire’s oldest breweries, Batemans.
