Simply parking up in itspleasant surroundings can be enough tocalm your mood and its small size meansyou can spend an afternoon there andsee most of its immediate sights rightaway. However, that’s to miss out on itshidden delights! With one main street inBroadway, the village stands almost aloneon the edge of the wolds and has alwaysbeen somewhat of a pleasure destination. Looking up and down its main strip, you could be fooled into thinking you arein a quaint, seaside resort. Gift shops, independent boutiques and some of themost pleasant and quaint tea rooms you’llfind this side of Harrogate line the streetsand there’s a distinct lack of chain stores,mini-marts or anything, well, modern! This is to its credit, as too often theaverage British high street is an identikitone, full of big names and no soul. Take a stroll from the centre of thevillage, past the newly-refurbished Inn atWoodhall Spa and you’ll find ice creamparlours, jewellers, butchers, sweet shopsand bakeries selling what looks like thelargest selection of pastries and fanciesyou’ll have seen in a long time. Itcertainly took all our willpower not tostep in and fill our stomachs with sugarytreats, maybe next time! A hidden book shop we stumble acrossseems to be thriving, with shelves uponshelves of local history books and inevitablya display of RAF wartime books too.Inevitable, because the area is synonymouswith the skies, having been the base for the617 Squadron, otherwise known as theDambusters during World War II. Their base was the Petwood Hotel, aturn of the century construct that wasbuilt as a house for Lady Grace Weigall, who had it made from her favourite, or‘pet’ wood. It still holds a tribute to the617 Squadron today that the public canvisit. These days the hotel is a popularwedding venue, and with its beautifulsurrounding woodland and open spaces,Woodhall Spa is one of ourcounty’s gems, with a senseof comfortable history anda sedate pace. We pay avisit to see what’shappening these days.WherehistoryremainsWherehistoryremains012-015:Layout 1 17/6/13 10:52 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13WOODHALL SPAyou can see why. This link to the past is celebrated every year withthe Woodhall Spa 1940s Festival. Taking place thisyear on 3rd and 4th August, it’s a great day out forthe family with displays, entertainers and paradestaking place and all for free. Spread across the wholevillage, there are re-enactments taking place at JubileePark from wartime living history groups such as theFoxhole Fugitives, the Northwest 101st AirborneDivision, Soldier Blue, Northern Forties, The Road toMandalay, The Great Patriotic War Society, The AlliedForces Movement Control, the Nottinghamshire andDerbyshire Living History Group and many more,Shops are quaint andtraditional here, no chainstores to speak of!PHOTO: STUART PEARCEYThe tea rooms are a great place towhile away a few hoursPHOTO: STUART PEARCEYShopping is as traditionalas it comes in Broadway. The past stands alongside thepresent, like this old petrol pumpoutside the ice cream parlour. The history is everywherein Woodhall.14 012-015:Layout 1 17/6/13 10:52 Page 214 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYWOODHALL SPAmeaning a real sense of history close up!Live entertainment in the form of KatieSpitfire, Lola Lamour, Brandyn Shaw andthe Major Swing and Blitz Dancers shouldseal the deal for those not into militaryhistory too. There’s also a host of militaryand classic vehicles on display too andpeople are happy to dress up in perioddress, giving the town a real forties feelfor the weekend. This goes hand in hand with one of thetown’s main attractions, the Kinema inthe Woods, which is a fully-functioningcinema, often referred to as a well-keptsecret. It’s been a cinema since 1922 andhas two screens, one of which only gaveup the front six rows being deckchairs in1953! To enter its doors is to be transportedinto the past, with film memorabiliastanding alongside billboards for currentproductions and a classic-lookingconcessions stand too. It shows filmsseven days a week, all year round andproves popular with tourists from thehotels and campsites nearby, but is alsoenjoying local success throughout theyear thanks to its unique character andcharm. Pay it a visit, you won’t bedisappointed, particularly if you visit on aweekend where the original Comptonorgan is being played in the interval.
