Amid the fun, the event programme will also serve as anopportunity to provide local youngsters with an understanding of World War I on the hundredth anniversary of its outbreak. The showwill also pay tribute to the servicemen and women of the era with a number of themed exhibits.Visit www.cleethorpesairshow.co.uk for all the latest updates on the show!LATEST NEWSNewport Arch restorationproject is completeAn ambitiousproject torestore one ofLincoln’s oldestlandmarks hasnow beencompleted.Work tosecure thefuture ofNewport Arch,which is theonly Romanarch in thecountry that traffic can pass underneath, was carried out byspecialist stonemasons from Robert Woodhead.Council leader Ric Metcalfe says, “Newport Arch is anextremely important part of Lincoln’s heritage and it is vital werestored it to ensure it can be enjoyed for many more years tocome. The arch is the Roman north gateway to Lincoln and is anessential part of the rich heritage that makes us so successful as atourist destination.The work has involved stabilising parts of the arch, replacingeroded stones and adding a layer of stonework to the top toprotect the Roman brickwork. In addition, the cement-basedmortar has been replaced with lime mortar and three sections ofthe gable wall have been taken down and rebuilt stone bystone.Visitor’s choice at theNatural World CentreThe Natural WorldCentre’s annualphotographic competitionsaw a great number ofentries all capturing thebeautiful landscape andcreatures found withinWhisby Nature Reserve.This year’s sponsor,Kodak Express of Lincoln,had the difficult task ofchoosing the winners andafter much considerationannounced Rachel Barnes infirst place with her entryentitled ‘Walk in to Nature’.She will receive a fabulousprize along with her entryfeaturing in the NaturalWorld Centre’s 2015calendar.All entries were also ondisplay at the NaturalWorld Centre with visitors being able to vote for theirfavourite. He was officiallyelected during a ceremony atthe Guildhall, attended bycouncillors and membersof the public.Proposing theappointment, Cllr PeterWest talked about CllrCharlesworth’s role asSheriff of Nottingham from 1991 to 1993 and then asLord Mayor in the city. Having moved to Lincoln eleven yearsago, Cllr Charleswoth became involved in politics again whenhe was elected onto City of Lincoln Council in 2007.After accepting the mayoral ring as a symbol of the honourand dignity of the office, Cllr Charlesworth said, “It is a hugehonour to be able to represent this fine city whose futuredevelopment is most certainly bright indeed.“As portfolio holder for community cohesion and socialinclusion, I sought to increase public understanding andacceptance, respect and tolerance, in order to bring new and long-standing communities in Lincoln together. As Mayor of Lincoln, Ihope to continue that enterprise.”LATEST NEWSMedievalruins discovered atconstruction siteArtefacts dating back to the Roman periodhave been discovered during anarchaeological dig being undertaken as part ofa Willmott Dixon construction project at LincolnUniversity Technical College.The most significant discovery is a medieval stonesculpture of the Virgin Mary and Christ thought tobe 15th century in date. It was discovered behinda stone wall on a part of the site located closest toLincoln Cathedral. The dig phase of the projectmay last up to several months with around 2000cubic metres of soil requiring removal, a goodpercentage of which will be removed by hand. The £6.65 million project will see Willmott Dixon construct a brand newbuilding and refurbish one Grade II listed building on the Greestone Centresite. These two buildings will make up Lincoln UTC, a specialist engineeringand science college, and will be ready for full time use from September2015. Simon Thompson, Training Principal at Covenham,says, “Everyone worked their hearts out, and thecustomers all went away smiling. By time I got home wealready had two or three people signing up online forcourses, with our youth section potentially doubling innumbers.
