< PreviousRiding out on roads is becoming riskier, but howcan horses and drivers co-exist comfortably?Horse sense, road sense, good sense90 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYIt’s increasingly obvious to horse riders that riding out on roadsis becoming riskier, only partly thanks to the increase in trafficeven on previously quiet country roads. Lots of riders have nochoice but to use main roads to get to safe places to ride, butmany now prefer to travel their horse to a bridleway whereverpossible rather than risk the roads.Equine specialist Brenda Gilligan, Senior Solicitor at WilkinChapman, says, “Perhaps surprisingly, a new survey from the AApoints out that 17% of motorists don’t think horses should beallowed on roads at all, highlighting what seems to be thegrowing intolerance of road users for riders. 6% of motoristsadmit to having had a ‘near miss’ with a horse and 8% saythey do not know how to pass a horse safely. “Horse riders also report, not in the survey, increasingproblems with cyclists as that sport grows in popularity, particularly due to the increase in road races and ‘sportifs’where large numbers of cyclists ride a given route on a publicroad, but the road remains open to normal traffic. No onegroup wants to ban the others from public roads, but there isroom for improved communication and respect betweenthem.”The AA survey has useful tips for drivers, such as slowingright down, passing the horse as widely as possible and notrevving engines. Lorry drivers may not be aware that air brakenoise can startle horses. Equally, cyclists may not know that ahorse can’t see backwards, but they can hear a cyclist comingup behind them, thus becoming anxious. As Brenda says, “Horses are flight animals, which means thattheir defence to a known or perceived threat will be to take offat speed so as to distance themselves. Unfortunately apanicked horse will not care which way it goes – and thatcould mean you find yourself, as a cyclist or motorist, withHorse sense, road sense, good senseRiding out on roads is becoming riskier, but howcan horses and drivers co-exist comfortably?090-091:Layout 1 13/6/14 11:27 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY91EQUINEnearly a ton of horse bang in front of you. A ton of horse onyou or your car will do a lot of damage to people andproperty.“Riders can help by avoiding busy roads and times, training their horses to traffic as far as possible, givingclear signals in good time, wearing hi-visibility clothing –you don’t need writing on it – and being courteous toother road users. However, motorists should be aware thatit’s not always possible to take a hand off the reins on ahorse to wave a thank you, but a nod of the head isacceptable. “There is also a growing trend for the use of head-camsand for dashboard mounted cameras in cars, which recorduntoward incidents and may be used in evidence in claims.Have ‘Head Camera In Use’ on your hi-vis, so people areaware they could be being filmed. It’s not illegal to film onpublic property, but it is on private. Finally, make sure youhave insurance in case of a claim.”Making sure you know what’s around you and what theymight do is the best way to ensure riders, cyclists andmotorists can use the same roads with the minimum of fuss. And if you want to experience riding and cycling at the sametime, visit www.trotify.com.PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/JAMESDAVIDPHOTOA fantastic, fun, free day out for the whole family!Free Admissionwww.bransbyhorses.co.ukBransby Horses | Bransby | Lincoln | LN1 2PHT: 01427 788464 | E: mail@bransbyhorses.co.ukRegistered Charity No: 1075601. There’s all the latest news online at www.lincolnshiretoday.net, updated throughout themonth, we’re on Twitter and Facebook, and you’ll see our reporters and cameras at events across the county. What do you love most about Lincolnshire? The startling diversity that the county offers! Being of such largeproportions, you can generally always find what you’re looking for. Beit kite surfing on the coast or mountain biking in the Wolds, no onecan ever complain of feeling cooped up! Having the added privilege ofseeing the county from the air almost every day, you begin to get animpression of the wonderful history that’s mapped out below - be itthe decommissioned airfields or, stretching further back, the amazingbuildings, palaces and castles that litter the Lincolnshire countryside. What advice would you give to those who’ve never visitedthe county?Don’t judge a book by its cover. Often the most interesting partsof Lincolnshire are to be found tucked out of sight and often the firstor only view most get of Lincolnshire is out the window of either atrain or a car travelling on the A1. Step just a little off the beatenpath and there’s treasure to be found. Steep Hill in Lincoln is a primeexample - it almost feels as if you are walking out of the town andyet you reach the summit and you’re presented with the grandestLincolnshireToday @lincstodaylincolnshiretoday.netStay in touch withLincolnshire TodayWe love to know what you think of the magazine, so feel free to get in touch with us via Twitter at@lincstoday or search for us on Facebook. In the meantime, we’ll see you atthe Waddington Airshow, our necks craned to the sky!rewards. Of course I have to say Iwould encourage a first-timevisitor to come and watch theRed Arrows at their home base atRAF Scampton! What’s the biggest highlight of the year in the county for you? With my job in the Red Arrows, we tend to spend almost all of theyear out of the county, apart from winter training, so I’d have to sayit’s actually Christmas! The county has a unique way of grasping theChristmas spirit, be it at the Market in Lincoln, or the mulled wineand Christmas decorations in The George in Stamford, my hometown, you can’t help but feel festive during a Lincolnshire Christmas.Where is the best night out in the county? I could be biased and say my home town of Stamford, with itsplethora of beautiful pubs like the Tobie Norris and the extensivechoice of award-winning eateries. But I’m a city boy at heart andyou can’t beat a night in the bustle of Lincoln. A few drinks in theElectric Bar at the Doubletree by Hilton, followed by sampling someexotic ale in the Strait and Narrow, before picking one of the clubslike Home to dance the wee hours away...What do you think is the best thing about Lincolnshire people?Having grown up in Scotland and the South of England, I wouldhave to say it’s their acceptance of ‘strangers’. Perhaps stemmingfrom the diversity of the county I alluded to and despite beingrelative newcomers to the county due to my job, my family and Ihave been given nothing but startling hospitality and a generouswelcoming from Lincolnshire ‘natives’. In fact, at no point have wefelt like this isn’t ‘home’.Love LincolnshireEvery month we talk to a Lincolnshire resident to find out what makes the county special forthem.
