Thehundredth anniversary of World WarI, the seventieth anniversary of D-Dayand the fiftieth season of theRed Arrows will allbe marked during the show. The Showitself is also celebrating its twentiethanniversary, so they’re pulling out all thestops to make it a memorable occasion.Lincolnshire’s own Red Arrows arealways a huge attraction and at this year’sShow you’ll be able to see the new tailfinmarking their golden anniversary. TheUnion flag makeover is the mostsignificant change to the look of theteam’s famous aircraft in its history, emphasising the Red Arrows’ role as thepublic face of the RAF – but the iconicfuselage remains unchanged, as doestheir ability to put on a fantastic, breath-taking display! With the anniversary of D-Day fresh inour minds, the Slovak Air Force will bemaking a welcome return to the Show, demonstrating its L-39CM CM Albatrossjet trainer. The aircraft is specially paintedthis year to celebrate the life andachievements of Sqn Ldr Otto Smik, whobecame one of the most successfulcombatants among Czechoslovakianpilots who served in the RAF and wouldhave been ninety this year. The Albatrosswill be supported by a Let410, a type notoften seen in the UK, which will be onstatic display.Another celebration this year is thecentenary of the Swiss Air Force and theywill also appear at the Show with theirF18 Hornet, one of the best and mostmanoeuvrable fast jets in the world. TheSwiss F-18 demo team, with display pilotCapitaine Julien Meister, will grace theWaddington skies. The charity realises Jon’s dreamof helping young people to overcomeadversity and identify their strengths –and they have enjoyed huge success.Within the next two years, the Trust willbe operating in nine different countiesacross the UK, and by 2020 aims to beoffering life-changing opportunities tothousands of young people every year. The programmes are designed to buildconfidence, teamwork, trust, communication and self-belief, showingyoung people that with the rightmotivation, they can take control of theirfuture. This was illustrated recently asstudents from Priory Witham Academy inLincoln visited the Battle of BritainMemorial Flight at RAF Coningsby. The students met Spitfire pilots fromthe Flight and found out what it’s like tofly these iconic aircraft. They were giventhe chance to get up close to Spitfires, aReaching new heightswith Blue SkiesYoung people from Lincoln have been literally reaching for the skies as part of the JonEgging Trust’s Blue Skies Programme. The Trust use the inspiring work of the RAF tohelp kids from across Lincolnshire and beyond work towards their ambitions.Hurricane, Dakota and the Lancasterduring a hangar tour, and learned aboutthe roles the aircraft played in WorldWar II.This visit was one of the first for a newintake of students. As Jon’s wife EmmaEgging, who plays a major role in theprogramme, tells us, “The first group ofstudents joined us at Level 1 in 2012. In2013 they moved onto a second levelwhich is all about leadership, and thisyear they’re going on to do a workplacement, which is at HumbersideAirport. Each year we’re taking on a newintake at Level 1 so we’ll get to the pointwhere we have three levels running inevery region, as we do now inLincolnshire.“The Level 1 intake visited theMemorial Flight about five sessions intotheir programme, and it’s all about skillsbuilding. They’re particularly focusing oncommunication and historic teamwork,so it’s ideal because they were able toaccess all the famous aeroplanes andhear the stories of how they were usedto save lives and protect the country. They found out about the different rolesplayed by the members of the team andtook part in a role-playing scenarioinvolving a real life situation thathappened when a plane was shot down. They also hear about the current teamand their own personal stories about whythey decided to fly.“The programme is about providingyoung people with real life examples ofteamwork and giving them opportunitiesto build their skills. We’re delighted tohave the BBMF team involved to illustrateexactly how the pilots involved dealt withhigh pressure situations, and we canlearn from that. How can kids who arethirteen and maybe not reaching theirfull potential at school benefit from thesereal life examples? That’s what theprogramme’s all about – making linksbetween the past and the present.”Lincolnshire Today has seen first-handthe exceptional work that goes on as part086-087:Layout 1 13/6/14 08:58 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY87of the programme and we’ve beenhugely impressed. It’s not just RAFConingsby that’s playing a major role, either. Inspirational individuals from RAFCranwell, RAF Scampton, RAF Wittering,MoD North Luffenham and RAFWaddington have all been involved inguiding students through problemsolving, teamwork and communicationtasks which will provide them with creditstowards a qualification in BTEC Workskills– and hopefully a rewarding career inlater life. The Jon Egging Trust has certainlyensured the legacy of Jon lives on. TheTrust receives no government funding, however, and currently relies ondonations from the public. Happily, that’s no longer the case. The increase in technology means the old problemsregarding location are no longer an issue – the digital agemeans Lincolnshire companies are able to compete on a levelplaying field against rivals from anywhere in the world.Meanwhile, Lincolnshire’s links with Europe – an increasinglyimportant market – are as good as anywhere in the UK, hence thearrival of numerous multinational companies in recent years. Theopportunities that exist for young people to showcase their talenthere in Lincolnshire are limitless! The renewable energy sector has become particularly importantin recent years and many commentators suggest this could havethe biggest impact on the prosperity in our part of the world forgenerations. Yet Lincolnshire also excels in many other areas, withengineering in particular a real success story. The challenge now isto illustrate to new talent that there are plenty of opportunities forthem to enjoy a hugely successful career here in Lincolnshire. This explains why strong links with our region’s educationalestablishments are proving particularly fruitful for local businesses.Companies of all shapes and sizes. are able to benefit from thesteady introduction of new talent, bringing impressive skills andinnovative new ideas. With sectors such as agriculture having atough time trying to replace long-serving staff now headingtowards retirement age, linking up with schools and trainingproviders are a fabulous way to pick from the latest rising stars. The same is also true in reverse – with schools, colleges anduniversities benefiting from stronger relationships with businesses, allowing them to make use of their expertise to provide morevaluable content for courses. The recent introduction of UTCs is agreat example, with the students able to benefit from acurriculum devised in association with many major companies.Lincoln UTC will open in September and its principal Dr RonaMackenzie says, “At Lincoln UTC we will provide a uniquelearning environment for our students. Our curriculum has beenspecifically designed to develop the employability and life skills ofour students to ensure they are adequately prepared for theworld of work.”Local company MASS has recently been engaged to provide theICT solution for the UTC, which will make use of real-worldbusiness approaches and integrate the latest technology. Uniquely,MASS will provide engineering projects and the students will alsohave an opportunity to undertake ‘work inspiration’ placements. With the Humber UTC in Scunthorpe having already been giventhe go-ahead, it looks as if students across the county will be ableto benefit from a more focused curriculum, and businesses from astronger set of students to choose from. One great example of the links between Lincolnshire’seducators and employees is the annual Inter-college Building Craft Competition whichwas held this month at Lincoln College. 26students from Lincoln, Gainsborough andNewark Colleges made it through to theThe nextgenerationLincolnshire businesses are benefiting fromthe ideas and energy from new talentThe annual Inter-collegeBuilding Craft Competitionwas held this month atLincoln CollegeOne great example of the links between Lincolnshire’s educatorsand employees is the annual Inter-college Building CraftCompetition which was held this month at Lincoln College88 LINCOLNSHIRETODAY088-089:Layout 1 13/6/14 13:03 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY89BUSINESS LINCS.finals and took part in a series of live challenges designed to testthe skills they’ve learnt as part of their course. The competition’scommercial sponsors presented prizes and were no doubtfascinated by the skills being demonstrated being displayed –and the students themselves were able to make some veryimportant contacts. As well as the county’s large businesses benefiting for linkswith our educational establishments, so too are the smallestcompanies. Many of our most innovative businesses have spunoff from university courses themselves, and facilities such as theUniversity of Lincoln’s Sparkhouse Studios are the incubators formany brand new businesses. Meanwhile, visitors to theLincolnshire Show will have seen the results of the SchoolsChallenge where business partners invited pupils to exploretopics based around food, farming and sustainability, with theaim of getting them more enthused by the subjects.Farming and agriculture has long been a hugely profitablesector in Lincolnshire, whereas advanced engineering andrenewables are more recent success stories. All have arequirement to bring in new ideas. It’s not just new arrivals, either, as many companies also work alongside educationalestablishments to provide effective training for existingemployees. Because unless you’ve taken specific steps to make surethat you and your family are protected against attack from virus, malware and cyber criminals, every time you use the Internetyou’re taking a big gamble. You might say, “Oh, but nobody would be interested in me..”,and in that case you’d be just about right.
