The onus is on luxury, butalso, as Chris puts it: “Giving thecustomer what they want and makingchanges in their kitchen to the level theywant. The emphasis from both us and themanufacturers we work with is onintelligent, ergonomic design that aidsthe user to get the most from theirkitchens.”Having Neff and Luce kitchens onshow in their light, airy premises givescustomers the chance to see whatdifferent kitchens can mean for them. There is a Neff kitchen kitted out withcooking in mind. Indeed representativesfrom Neff do cooking demonstrationsthroughout the year, but a ‘facelift’kitchen is also on display. Looking at it,you could be mistaken for thinking it wasa completely new fit, but as Chris saysthe quality is such that it isn’t simply acosmetic cover-all process, rather a wayof saving money over buying and fittingan entirely new kitchen.“Most customers we work with arehomeowners who want to improve theirliving space, rather than to do theirproperties up and sell them. We spendmuch more time in our kitchens thesedays, indeed more than ever, so it’simportant that it feels right.“There are significant savings to bemade with our facelift service, but that’snot to say that a bespoke kitchen with allnew appliances, surfaces, plinths andcornices might not be right for you too.We work with customers to get thekitchen they want.”As Chris says, there are only one or twoinstances in one’s lifetime that you planand purchase a new kitchen, so you wantit to be right. He points out that DreamDoors have a dedicated team of fitterswho are tracked on the tradesmen websiteCheckatrade.com, which rates workcarried out by using customer feedback,“We sustain the best ratings for satisfactionin the country,” he explains. The ethos at Dream Doors seems to becare of the customer and finding the rightsolution for your needs. He’s not only anaccomplished and respected artist, butalso acts as a creative industriesconsultant too, as well as being involvedin countless projects, societies andcommittees thanks to his voluminousexperience. If you think this seems like Peter is animportant and busy person, you’d beright. Having first met him at anexhibition for the Contemporary CraftsNetwork, we are amazed at the scope ofhis work and the sheer amount of workin his quiet home a stone’s throw fromthe centre of Lincoln.Asked how he first got into ceramics,Peter laughs and has to think before heanswers, “I had a fantastic art teacher atschool and one summer they bought in apotter and I was gobsmacked. I was soldon the idea and actually went to work forhim.“That led to me going to theBournemouth College of Art and Designin 1959 under the tutelage of DavidBallantyne, Peter Stoodley and PaulFletcher before I went to the RoyalCollege of Art in 1965 where I wasLivingartPeter Moss is known throughout Lincolnshire for not only hisdistinctive style, but for teaching and collaborating with a majorityof the county’s artists and creatives. We caught up with him at hisLincoln home to discover more about him.024-025:Layout 1 13/6/14 09:06 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY25ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIREencouraged to pursue an open-ended fine art approach.”Since then, Peter has developed his career in many ways over the years, being a lecturer, artist and consultant, sometimes all at once. He hasexhibited all over the world and continues to regularly show his work inLincoln. We visited Peter close to an unveiling of work influenced by a visit toItaly, ‘After Italy (Dopo Italia)’. Peter, along with watercolourist Allan Bruceand woodworker Neil Simpson spent a week in Italy researching varioushistoric and architectural techniques to inform their work.Peter’s work reflects the tessellation and repetition of the wall markingshe saw, particularly in Florence, but also church floor mosaics he saw overthere. Although Peter states the work is not religious, the influence offaded, but still amazingly beautiful religious art comes through in thecolours and patterns imbued into the large plates he shows us. Peter alsoshowed us a large reference library in his home, full to bursting withbooks on art and design and particularly of interest in this case, books onpatterns and traditional religious use of patterns and repetition. With ahome studio, Peter was able to realise this idea of repeating and care byadding layer upon layer in the kiln to this particular work, somethingwhich gives it an intricate and detailed look as well as suggesting Italyabsolutely. “I’ve done around six or seven firings on some of these pieces which isunusual in ceramics,” he says. “The idea of repetition has beenfascinating, in some patterns on here it’s almost a kind of destruction.”We can’t quite comprehend how much work has gone into thesepieces, but as you can see, Peter’s work speaks for itself. Lincolnshirecontinues to throw us incredible artists working in a fantastic variation ofmediums, what will we see next?In the meantime, look out for exhibitions Peter is showing at soon. Taking people through step by step,Janette is not only a passionate horticulturalist, but also a greatdesigner. She takes us through her portfolio, all lovingly hand-drawn and saved from each project. These all vary fromprojects such as a shaded, long and narrow garden sheplanted thoughtfully, to a huge, multi-acre haven for birdlife. On home soil, her cottage in the pleasant climes ofBillinghay has a varied and well-planned design which wasoriginally somewhat of a blank canvas. A series of beds withThe beautyof designJanette Merilion is a garden designer by trade, but hergarden at home is equally impressive. We pay her a visitin sunny Billinghay to see what wonders she has on show.026-029:Layout 1 13/6/14 09:08 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY27GARDENSautomatic watering systems mean that it’s not only lowmaintenance, but also filled out and inviting. As well as several beds Janette uses for showing examples toclients of flowers and plants that work particularly well, there’s awildlife pond nestled among the riot of colour which attracts frogs, tadpoles and insects.Elsewhere, there’s lots of fruit, which Janette says means she ispretty much self-sufficient from when combined with the extendedvegetable patch at the end of the garden. The tomatoes in thegreenhouse are of particular interest, with Janette producing herown passata and chutneys when they come to fruition. Elsewherewild garlic, peas, lettuce, runner beans growing over an arch and a28 026-029:Layout 1 13/6/14 09:08 Page 228 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYGARDENShost of carrots, onions and garlic growing in raised beds all impress. A fan of trees, Janette’s extensive collection extends to around twentydifferent types, both decorative and functional, including dogwood, a‘wedding cake tree’, silver birch, a flowering Japanese apricot and a liquidamber which, Janette tells us, “smells like sweet toffee in the winter.”As well as hellebores growing in shaded parts, the intermingled natureof the garden is what strikes us. A gorgeous birch grows over the benchat the bottom of the garden, with flowering clematis twisting its wayaround conifers to great effect too.We also spot winter-flowering honeysuckle nestled in the garden too, something we’re real fans of here at the magazine.Janette is full of ideas, but one piece she offers our readers in particularis a belief in bulbs. “Often people dismiss them, but if you plant thembetween perennials, then they look great and you’ll be rewarded eachyear.”Janette’s joy for the job comes from the feedback she gets from clients. Her home is full of photo albums depicting the various stages of gardensand one family even made their own hardback-bound book to present toJanette as a thankyou.“I often go back and visit and maintain gardens and I love seeing themused and people enjoying them, it’s a great way to live and every projectis different.”We’re quite envious, Janette - what a super way to spend your time!Find out more about Janette at www.conceptgardendesign.co.uk026-029:Layout 1 13/6/14 09:08 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY29Looking for agreat gift idea?Lincolnshire Today’s giftsubscription for only £27.55 with free deliveryCall 01472 310301or visit www.lincolnshiretoday.net/3411st 3issues only£1www.millstonegardencentre.co.uk01472 828 150 Cheapside, Waltham, Grimsby DN37 0HX EXCLUSIVESAME DAYDELIVERYAT A TIMETO SUIT YOU!Mon to Sat: 8:00—5:00pm.
