< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGWe’re big fans of Craft in Lincoln, withgorgeous surroundings and a welcomingatmosphere it’s a fantastic place to grabsome food. One sure sign that a place isbuzzing is to find it almost full on aweeknight. The Tuesday we visit, there’s abooth reserved for us, but most tablesare full of people either sharing in food orpartaking in the cocktails the bar isknown for.We sat down to discuss starters. Themenu Craft offers is one that takesinspiration from American diners, but alsohas a contemporary Italian influence too.We picked the tempting-sounding garlicdough-balls and the tempura-batteredprawns. The dough balls came cooked ina delicious Provençale sauce, finished offwith some grated parmesan and sometapenade olives which gave it a rich andplentiful taste. The prawns by comparisonwere a light and delicious contrast, beingas they were beautifully battered andserved with a crisp salad to counteractthe sharp kick of chilli sauce providedalongside. Having tried the kitchen’s famous hotdogs and burgers before, we decided toplump for something different on thisparticular visit. With the ability to createyour own pizza topping from a fantasticarray of ingredients, we put together aspicy and luxurious combination in theform of pulled pork, jalapeno peppersand red onion that was to die for. As anadded twist, the pizza comes uncut, witha large pizza cutter provided so you cansize your slices to perfection. It was afantastic idea and one that paid off as itwas utterly divine. We also ordered a creamy andindulgent chicken and chorizo linguine, which came in a huge bowl, decoratedwith some sweet balsamic to really addto the rich, thick Provençale sauce whichsuited the chargrilled meat just right. We were too full to partake of adessert, but Craft offer you the chance topick from a wide range of incredible-looking cakes and fancies from its well-stocked coffee lounge, where you can getmade to order sandwiches, coffee andcake for just £3 and with cream for just£3.50. This is also worth a visit in the dayas Craft’s freshly-prepared coffee andsandwiches are also some of the bestwe’ve tried in the city too. With incredible value on offer too,Craft is the perfect place to meet and eat. With informal seating and a laid-backatmosphere too, we highly recommend avisit.Craft is at 272 High Street, Lincoln, LN2 1JG. With impressive décor thatstrikes a balance between traditional andcontemporary, you are assured of a night of comfortand style as well as fantastic eating. To start, we selected some fantastic starters in theshape of a ham hock and pea risotto, which was afresh and mint-infused delight and a duck confitsalad, which combined the luxurious, rich taste ofwell-prepared duck leg with a zesty and sharporange and honey dressing.Main courses at the White Hart are best describedas generous, yet subtle. Our roast rump of lambwith a garlic and herb crust was a hearty anddelicious dish, which was pushed into stratosphericlevels of indulgence with a sweet and creamypumpkin puree and some crushed, sauted potatoes.A corn-fed breast of chicken, served with a deliciousparmesan crisp, asparagus and a mushroom risottowas also a treat, with the risotto providing a soft, pleasing texture alongside the perfectly-deliveredchicken and sharp, salt-led parmesan. With dessert, we plumped for the guilty pleasurethat is the chocolate trio. With three lovingly-craftedchocolate creations, a hazelnut truffle cup, a darkdelice and a brownie that came with a soft scoop ofice cream, it was a chocaholic’s dream. The subtlehazelnut was a pleasure, as was the rich, thick and indulgent delice. The brownie was perfect withice cream, which by the time it came to our table was slightly oozing over the brownie’s rich surface. Our salted caramel macaroons were similarly mouth-watering, with a gorgeous hazelnut tuille and abutterscotch and lime sauce, it was a fresh-tasting and satisfying end to a fantastic meal.We were also taken with the hotel’s wine list, which boasts some fantastic selections from all overthe world. It’s only a pity we were driving home as the port selection also looked incredible! The White Hart Hotel is on Bailgate, Lincoln, LN1 3AR. Well now you can,Skegness is now home to MeanieBoBini’s, a bar, grill and friary that has theatmosphere and look that takes you fromseafront Lincolnshire to New Orleans coolas soon as you walk through the door.Named after the gangster, Benny"Meanie" BoBini, who was Al Capone’sright hand man (or so legend has it), thebar exudes cool, with private booths, a litup dance floor, gorgeous lighting and awelcoming atmosphere it’s both arelaxed place to eat and while away theday and a place to push the boat out inthe evening. We took some recommendations onthe food and weren’t left disappointed. We plumped for a starter of Mississippichicken strips which was a delight.Smokey, sweet and thick BBQ saucemade the golden strips sing and thesalad was a great accompaniment. We’dendorse this as being a fantastic way tostart a meal here. For our main course, an old Skegnessstaple was suggested in the form ofclassic fish and chips. Served with ahearty slice of lemon, some tangy tartaresauce and mushy peas (of course!) wedug in to find a fantastic take on the dishso known throughout the county as aspeciality. The portion size was reallyfilling, but those with a larger appetitecan opt for a jumbo portion for just asmall charge. The batter was beautiful, crispy and softer in the middle, itcontrasted with the fresh, full taste of fishwithin. So often with fish and chips, lifeless, soggy chips are the name of thegame. Not so at Meanie BoBini’s, thesewere cooked to perfection, with justenough crispiness and bite on theoutside, with a soft, fluffy interior. Wecleared our plates, simplywonderful. There’s a whole host of dessertsmade fresh every day on offer too, which change each day and we’drecommend taking your time toselect something special as it alllooked so good!Open from 11am to 11pm everyday, we can’t think of a moreinviting place on the seafront! It’ssimple to enter, as schools across thelocal area are invited to apply to takepart. Each school that registers willassigned a specific colour and invited toattend the event in that colour. They caneven make their own carnival masks orbring any type of musical instrumentthey like – drums, maracas, anything thatmakes a noise. With a bit of luck, theroads around Cleethorpes will be a feastfor the eyes and ears!A further way in which schools can getinvolved with proceedings is via thehugely popular schools competitionwhich has been running for the past fewmonths. Local schools have beenchallenged to create a fishy-themed float, with the best one appearing in theparade. Young’s are providing the floatand the safety equipment with the schooladding the décor. Last year’s winner wereEastfield Primary School who wereamong the stars of the show. The Carnival is certainly one of themost popular events in the county and, while Young’s funding means it shouldenjoy a bright future, the organisersCleethorpes Events are constantly seekingfunding to ensure each year’s parade isbetter than ever. A happy side effect ofthis is that it brings together localorganisations, charities and businessesover six months working together toproduce ideas, costumes and floatsculminating in the parade. All moneycollected during the parade has beenshared between participating groups, andthe carnival fund itself, in an effort tomake it a truly sustainable event year onyear.Watch out for Lincolnshire Today at the Carnival too! For patients, this could meanthe difference between life and death. While the crew of the helicopter are inaction saving lives, on the ground, thereis a dedicated team of individuals whowork tirelessly to raise money to keep theair ambulance not only flying, but fullyequipped. It is a costly business providingan emergency helicopter service that runs365 days a year. The Lincolnshire andNottinghamshire Air AmbulanceCharitable Trust must raise £1.8 millionevery year to maintain the service. The charity employs only a smallnumber of full and part time staff, whowork out of their offices in Lincoln andNottingham. The charity are increasinglymore dependent on the committedvolunteers who generously give theirtime and expertise by fundraising, attending events, giving talks, doingpresentations, working in the shops andcollecting donation tins. Even though this wasthe first time the charity had done this, the response was really positive and theinformation gleaned from the answers ishelping to further support its team ofvolunteers.Sally Crawford, Deputy Chief Executivefor LNAACT, notes most people weremotivated to volunteer for the airambulance because it is a local charity.Sally says, “We were really surprised butincredibly pleased to see that many ofour volunteers stated that they chose theair ambulance because of our greatreputation, which not only benefits localcommunities, but saves lives. Most of ourvolunteers are retired as they have moretime to offer, but they also understandthat volunteering is a wonderful source ofsocial contact and we learned from thesurvey that many friendships have beenformed between the volunteers.”Volunteering opportunities have provedespecially valuable to people who arewidowed or on their own, a number ofpeople commented that they really enjoythe opportunity to get out of the houseand meet people. Sally continues, “One lady said thatvolunteering had been her lifeline sinceher husband had been placed in anursing home. This was a huge realisationthat the work we do is not just in savinglives of those whom we airlift to hospital, but in helping those people who mayhave otherwise become socially isolated.“We like to organise regular get-togethers for our volunteers to show howmuch we appreciate them and it is awonderful way for them to share storiesand experiences.
