This is perhaps the fault ofmainstream media who tell us that thebest way to lose weight is to eat less foodthan you need and work yourself toexhaustion. And this is true, if your onlygoal is to lose weight. But there are arange of other health benefits to gettingoutdoors, and fishing can be a gatewayto many of them. Catch and releaseReeling yourhealth inFishing doesn’t always have the best following, butit’s actually a fantastic way to support a healthylifestyle – and we’re not just talking about thebenefits of eating fish.52 ÁPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/ANDRIANO50-53_Layout 1 21/06/2016 11:41 Page 252 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHEALTH & WELLBEING - FISHINGfishing is also popular within theLincolnshire area, and a viable option forthose who wish to enjoy the hobbywithout causing any harm to the fish.Fishing keeps you fitWhat we said earlier remains true, fishing is not the most cardio-intensivesport out there, but the best fishing spotsdo require a little bit of getting to, andstaying outside for long periods of timecan help promote fitness. It’s easy tomake an excursion more exerciseintensive, but the biggest advantage isthat it’s easier for those who alreadystruggle with more intense forms ofexercise.Fishing keeps your body healthyThe truth is that many peoplenowadays spend less time outdoors thanthey need. Vitamin D is important for theskin and body and is provided bysunlight, something we perhaps see lessof than we would like, trapped in ouroffices. A few hours fishing (don’t forgetsunscreen if it’s really hot) can not onlyimprove your skin and health – but alsoreduces signs of aging. There are evenstudies which suggest the gentle motionsof fly fishing can help promote soft tissuestretching, something advised to patientsafter surgery – especially women whohave just undergone treatment for breastcancer. Fishing reduces stressWe all have more stress in our livesthan we know what to do with. Nomatter what your life is like, chancesare at one point or another you havefelt the onset of stress, and somepeople don’t know how to deal with it.The concentration and calm peaceinvolved in fishing can help to reducethis. Allowing people to focus on thesounds of gently lapping water, theoccasional whistle of a line being cast, and the tranquillity of nature. If all elsefails, just being outside on a nice daywhere nothing can get in your waycan go a long way to making us feelbetter. It mayall sound complicated, but what this means is that the mindfocuses less on the struggles and concerns in your normal life, and more on what is taking place around you. This gives themind a chance to relax and recharge, meaning it is fresh andrested when you then need to apply it to other problems later– such as finding where the remote has vanished to.Fishing helps create new friendshipsOkay, this one isn’t exactly limited to fishing. Actually it’s alittle known thing called propinquity, which basically refers toattraction between people based on how close in proximityyou are to them. What it boils down to is that if you were tomake fishing a regular hobby, and one that you set aside timeto enjoy each month, you would then be put in regularcloseness to others who do the same. Nothing promotes afriendship more than regular meetings, and this can enable youto meet new people who you will run into on a regular basis. It can also be used to strengthen bonds between families, however. With many children being introduced to fishing bytheir parents – and carrying on said time together right up untilthe ends of their lives. This is obviously helped by the fact thatfishing is an activity people can enjoy even in their older years.Fishing doesn’t always get the best rep, and often goesunnoticed in regards to other sports. But there is a reason anactivity that has been around since the dawn of man remainsone of our most popular pastimes. The chance to get into onewith nature, to enjoy the outdoors away from the hustle andbustle of modern life – but also to unwind and de-stress. There are plenty of places within Lincolnshire that can helppeople to get started in fishing, and it’s always best to have atalk with the professionals before you spend time buying a lotof expensive and perhaps unnecessary equipment.50-53_Layout 1 21/06/2016 11:41 Page 454 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGLittlecoates Road, Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire DN34 4LXTel: +44(0)1472 240024 Email: reservations.grimsby@icon-hotels.co.uk www.thehumberroyalhotel.co.ukAward winning and recently accredited 4 star hotel, Grimsby’s premier hotel is now fullyrefurbished. The most uplifting person you couldever meet, Attila, greeted us before hesat us down to our table and ran throughthe whole menu. He explained whattastes we could expect so we could besure we were ordering exactly what wewere in the mood for. When the mixed mezze for two arrivedI was really surprised by the complexityof the flavours. The calamari was socrunchy and juicy especially when dippedin the fresh tzatziki. The borek (fetacheese stuffed filo pastry with beetrootpuree) was creamy and moreish. TheHellim kebab (chargrilled halloumi servedwith red pepper hummus) left meordering more, but my favourite mezzehad to be the green beans in spicytomato sauce. Just as we had finished ourstarters the head chef/owner, Kez,came out to greet us. As thekitchen door opened Iimmediately got a smell of ourmain courses and couldn’t wait.Kez explained that having grownup in a family where restaurantswere a living - but food a passion - it hadalways been an ambition to own his ownrestaurant. He also said that once hewent back into the kitchen he would beimmersed there for the rest of the nightand, like a genie granting a wish andgoing back into a bottle, he was gone.Shortly after that the main coursescame out.The iskender kebab (Lamb Kofte servedon a bed of pitta bread and spicy tomatosauce) looked so fresh and heart warmingthat I was a little jealous…until I sawwhat I had ordered. The lamb cutletssitting on a bed of smoked aubergineswere tender and juicy that they physicallymelted in your mouth. Everything waseaten so satisfyingly quickly. After a strong and refreshing Turkishcoffee our trio of desserts arrived: Telkadeyif (shredded pastry, filled withwalnuts and baked in honey syrup),baklava (a rich pastry, covered in honeysyrup and filled with walnuts) andshamali (a semolina and almond cakebaked in a honey syrup). Each dessertwas as sweet and as light as the next anda really perfect ending to a beautifulmeal. Wevisited Lincoln Castle this month, not towalk the walls or explore the Victorianprison, but to spend a little time at theCastle’s café Langton’s. Langton’s can be found on the groundfloor of the former Georgian gaol and isopen to visitors, residents and shoppersalike. A convenient stopping point for anyexploring the Castle, the café offers arange of coffees and teas as well asfreshly made sandwiches and snacks. We popped in for a break whileexploring the grounds, and in thatregards Langton’s performs well. It has awonderful view, outdoor seatingoverlooking six a half acres of the Castle’sgrounds and it’s a wonderful place torelax and take your mind off things whileenjoying the simple fair on offer. For starters my guest and I sampled themushroom soup that was on offer. Whilewith the mains I settled for a fish fingersandwich with chips and coleslaw, andmy guest went for the Caesar salad. Thefish fingers were made in-house, whichmuch of the food served is. Langton’sprides itself on local sourcing andseasonality, where food is freshly made, and the attention to detail does show. For desserts we had a simple afternoontea, along with some rocky road flapjack,Victoria sponge and cream scones.
