But a lackof information makes that difficult, withmany feeling left out to dry. Expertinformation and support can help peopleto understand how they can best lookafter themselves – enabling them to takecontrol back into their lives.7) Enjoying life – Emotional well-beingis important whether you have cancer ornot, but for those who do suffer, it canmake all the difference in the world.Physical activity, specialist support andadvice – all of these can not only help aperson feel happier, but also increasetheir chances of survival.8) Being a part of the community andable to give something back – Socialnetworks, charitable activity andvolunteering can all help people feelempowered, while also giving them asense of giving back to the community.Isolation can have a negative impact onquality of life and health, so getting outthere can make a real difference.9) Dying well – Macmillan says thatwith the right support 73% of people wishto spend their final hours in their home, and are able to. However, fewer than 30%actually receive this opportunity, with 38%dying in hospital. This is often due to lackof support that enables people to choosetheir place of rest. Macmillan as a charity works witheveryone involved in dealing with cancer, from patients to those who care forthem, all the way through to healthprofessionals – supporting them in givingthe best advice and care to their ownpatients. You can help Macmillan withthis in a range of ways, enabling them toprovide better and increasing support tothose with cancer. Donations can help Macmillan coverthe costs of their services, and are alwayswelcome. Whether it’s a one off donationor a regular one, it could mean paying anurse for an extra hour – or a carepackage for someone in need. You candonate online at www.macmillan.org.uk– but that isn’t the only way to help.Consider raising money or doing acharitable event if you are able to, itcould be as adventurous as hiking orparachuting, or as simple as shaving yourhair in support of Macmillan. To a charity which helps people acrossnot just Lincolnshire, but the country as awhole, each individual donation can helpprovide support for those who need it.59-61_Layout 1 21/06/2016 11:07 Page 362 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYThe otter was once widespreadthroughout the UK, though populationshave waned for decades in the wake ofhunting, river pollution and agriculturalintensification during and after theSecond World War - making it one of thenation’s more rarefied sights. But in thelast ten years, the otter population hasseen a dramatic resurgence, especially inLincolnshire’s waterways. With thenumber of otters getting struck downalong our roadsides, it must be a signthat the aquatic mammal is on the up. Despite the ‘Near Threatened’conservation status, the otter is amongour top predators, scarfing down a dietof fish, water birds, amphibians andcrustaceans. But all that grub doesn’tcome without plenty of aerobic exercise, and otters are some of our most prolificand able swimmers. Otter pups take tothe water as young as 10 weeks old, andall round, and have even been known tohold hands with humans. Otters comefrom the same family as badgers, weaselsand wolverines as well as being a distantcousin of the skunk. Unlike the skunk, however, the otter’s rear end is actuallyassociated with a pleasant scent. Otterdung, known as spraint, is used to markterritory and to communicate with otherotters and are believed to be (mostly)pleasant smelling. One expert evenlikened the smell to jasmine tea. Banning hunting and harmful, alongwith efforts to clean up our rivers andwaterways, and numerous conservationprojects, has seen the otter return fromthe brink of extinction. Little did it knowthere’d be a new nemesis to contendwith… automobiles. Once faced with extinction in our waterways, the otter has made thecomeback of the century and are now back in abundance. LincolnshirewildlifePHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/SCOOPERDIGITALthe species is well suited for a life in andout of the water with webbed feet, thethickest fur of any mammal and a niftytrick that allows them to close their earsand nose underwater. They can even diveto depths of 14 metres and staysubmerged for four minutes. When they’re not performing aquaticacrobatics, otters will spend most of theirtime on land or in their burrows, knownas holts, which are built from sticks andbranches along the water’s edge. Bitchotters and dog otters reach maturity attwo and three years, respectively, beforesetting down to have pups of their own.The pup will then live with its family, frolicking in the water for a year beforethe apron strings are snipped. Summer’s an ideal time for the otterwho loves to lounge around andsunbathe, before spending the nighthunting. Some otters are even known tomake waterslides to slip down into thewater. The consensus seems thatthey’re a playful animal62-63_Layout 1 21/06/2016 11:01 Page 1PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/HUIBVISSER62-63_Layout 1 21/06/2016 11:01 Page 264 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYGOLFOne of the most common faults with most club golfers is thatoften there is a tendency to be too tense in the address position.Always remember the basic fundamentals of checking the grip, aim and set up. Trying to keep things simple, why not try thissimple exercise of crossing your arms over the shoulder (asillustrated in picture three). This should help you to relax. It is important to take the correct posture position and turnallowing the weight to transfer and shoulders to turn 90degrees; this should give you the feeling of beingcoiled at the top of the back swing.Keep your game up to par David Edwards shares his top tips for the addresspositionPicture four illustrates the club at the halfway position. The excitement of waiting for the Sunday morninglesson, the most important hour of the week to a 10 year old. Whowould you ride this week? Quiet Jonathan, Rupert who bucked, glossy black Fell pony Driver or bad tempered Gail again? It didn’treally matter, it was a pony. Oh, to be a grown up and consideredworthy of riding the proprietor’s own red chestnut Arab, the horseon whom you galloped through your dreams at night. But the riding school is in decline. The Pony Club has recentlyre-launched, giving itself a new image to try to attract newmembers. A recent survey from the British Trade Association(BETA) shows that there is a general decline in riding numbers, noticeably in the 16-25 age group, older and disabled peopleand lower socio-economic groups. Dressage is the onlyequestrian discipline that has seen an increase, possibly due tothe high profile of Charlotte Dujardin and her notable successes,or it is perceived as safer than other disciplines. The eventingworld has seen several tragic fatalities recently, despite numerousmeasures to make it safer. Some of the reasons for decline may be fairly obvious. 16-25 isthe age when many people are doing A-levels and at university. Ifyou don’t have any money, with lessons at upwards of £25 anhour, then it’s impossible for you to afford them. Older ordisabled people may have health issues that prevent them riding. But also the world has changed. We want to do things when wewant to, such as a spur of the moment decision to go to the gym.It doesn’t have to be booked a week in advance for a set time. Wewant to see rapid progress, asking to jump after four lessons andlosing interest if lessons aren’t “thrilling” enough. We don’t wantto spend years perfecting our seat for dressage; we want to be outcompeting in an Intro test in a month (and complaining about thejudge’s comments!). Horses can be obtained through any numberThedeclineof theridingschoolThey’re an opportunity for anyone tolearn about riding, yet the ridingschool is in decline across our county. 66-67_Layout 1 21/06/2016 11:31 Page 1of internet and social media sites at low prices. It seems to make more sense to have your ownhorse available when you want, until you realise the commitment itinvolves and then it could become a welfare issue. But the decline is being addressed. Schools are beinginnovative and providing cafes and shower facilities to become amore social venue and for riders to fit around work. They realisedclients in the older groups have money, but want better qualityteaching and horses for their outlay, with individual lessons.“Own A Pony” days are popular, as are progressive tests in ridingand stable management. BETA has the “Take Up The Reins”campaign, complete with mechanical horse, to encourage peopleto take up or return to riding, improving health and reducingstress at the same time. So, forget the sweaty tyranny of the gym – support your localriding centre!LINCOLNSHIRETODAY67EQUINEPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/PETER TITMUSSPHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/MARCO MASCELLINIFOR A CARING ANDPROFESSIONAL APPROACHTO ALL YOUR VETERINARY NEEDS•Pre-purchase Examinations •Endoscopy•Stables & Theatre •Tendon Scanning•Reproductive Ultrasound •Mobile Xray Unit.Estate Office, Boston RdSPILSBYTel: 01790 752227Heath Road Trad. In hindsight, what we should have done isstore them somewhere dry and safe and wait for theprices to soar, as they have over the years.
