One of the most famous andwell-known elements of Scunthorpe is itsiron and steel works, but what manydon’t realise is that the town itself cameinto existence due to the exploitation ofironstone resources. In 1851 thepopulation was as little as 1200, but by1941 it had leapt to over 45,000. This rapid expansion saw the townrecognised as its own municipal boroughin 1936 and brought much prosperity tothe region. Much of this can still be seentoday, not only with the steel works butalso the amount of stately homes in theScunthorpe area, which would havehoused people of great importance backin the day. Today, the steel works continue, andremain a fixed part of the town’sheritage, even if the locals are more likelyto point towards their footballingheritage or the number of places one cango shopping. Looking a littlecloser, many of these same businesses are family-run, so itmight be more pertinent to say that family businesses are,in fact, the backbone of Britain. According to the Institute of Family Business, two thirdsof businesses in the UK are family-owned. That’s 4.8million in all, 16,000 of which are medium and largebusinesses. Some are fledgling companies, others havebeen established for hundreds of years, but togetherfamily businesses generate over a quarter of UK GrossDomestic Pound. In 2016, for example, the family businesssector paid £149 billion in tax, which is twenty-one percent of UK Government revenues. It isn’t just their production output and financialcontribution that makes this sector such an indispensablepart of the economy, but also what it offers in terms ofrecruitment. Family firms employ approximately 12.2million people in the UK and account for forty-seven percent of private sector employment. There are, however, a number of challenges forfamily businesses to overcome, as their greatest strengthcan sometimes, conversely, be their biggest flaw. It’s a fact of life that relatives bicker amongstthemselves. Bringing together the family at Christmas orfor social events often ignites the touch paper of oldfeuds, or creates new arguments in the process. It mightjust be that the familiarity between family members meansthat they’ll behave with one another in a way theywouldn’t with unrelated employees. Working with familymembers runs the risk of bringing household drama intothe workplace. Not only can this create tensions betweenthose employees that are related, but can also makeworking life difficult for all staff. It’s inevitable that anyfamily-run business serious about growth will have to lookoutside the clan when recruiting. Ensuring that these staffmembers can work free of bickering is critical. If not, abusiness is likely to struggle holding onto talent which canseriously scupper growth plans.© Shutterstock/Monkey Business Images67 Á64-68.qxp_Layout 1 20/06/2018 08:52 Page 264-68.qxp_Layout 1 20/06/2018 08:52 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY67FAMILY BUSINESSGLC REPAIRS LTDGLC REPAIRS LTDGLGLGLCommercialsGLC REPAIRS LTDEuropa Way, Grimsby,N E Lincolnshire DN41 8DSTelephone: 01469 574239 Mobile: 07711 496138Email: glcommercials@btinternet.comwww.glcommercials.co.ukRELIABLETRAILERHIRE• Flat Bed Trailers• Skeletal Trailers• Taut LinersTRAILER REPAIRS &SERVICING EXPERTS• 30+ Years of Experience• Trailer Servicing Bay• Breakdown Call-out Service• MOTPreparations01507 462336info@riggallsremovals.co.ukwww.riggallsremovals.co.ukA Family Business ProudlyCelebrating Over 60 YearsOf Removals & StorageOne of the other potential threats for family businessesis nepotism, or rather the appearance of favouring onestaff member over another simply because they’re relatedto you. It has to be said, however, that this won’t alwaysbe the fault of the employer, and can often givedisgruntled employees a means of expressing theirdissatisfaction at losing out on that promotion or raise. Say, for example, two employees are vying for a newlycreated or recently vacated position. Both candidatespossess skillsets which would be invaluable to the role, and both have the right kinds of experience. In fact, bothare evenly matched when it comes to experience, abilityand time served with the company. One of them, however, happens to be the son or daughter of the managingdirector, while the other is an unrelated employee. If theMD selects their own kin for the position, the othercandidate could throw around claims of nepotism – claimsthey could very well take to tribunal. For family businesses, the challenges don’t end in theboard room, sales floor or warehouse.Working together with family membersdoes invite the danger of talking shopover the phone or, should they livetogether, over dinner. Mental healthexperts claim that there should be aseparation between one’s work andsocial lives, but this is difficult whenboth cross over with one another. Some companies have found successin creating specific times or areaswhere business talk is forbidden, thereby creating that separation between work life andhome. But, ultimately, it comes down to the individualsinvolved and, as ever, what works for one company headwon’t necessarily do so for another. Family-run companies are the beating heart of Britishbusiness, permeating every sector right up and down thecountry.
