Later, in 1982, theyfounded Rimmer Bros., whichoperated from modest buildings atthe family home in Lincolnshire. Thosewere the days when they bought, sold, restored, serviced and providedparts for Triumph, doing all the workthemselves, for they had no otherstaff. The business then grew and manyyears later, the brothers still own thecompany they founded, where theynow have a loyal, expert and hard-working staff of 65 people to keep thewheels turning. Can you tell us a bit more abouthow this family-first approach hasinfluenced the hotel? Family is woven into the fabric ofPetwood’s history and plays a significantpart in its relevance today. Originally builtas a private house with a fortuneinherited from her father’s familybusiness, Grace (later to be Lady Weigall)established her home in her “pet wood”,welcoming friends and entertaining thegreat and the good for many years. In itsrole as a WWII Officers’ Mess, we canimagine young airmen coming home tothe Petwood to share stories and post-raid drinks with their wartime family.Evoking for our guests that feeling ofcoming home when they visit thePetwood is so important to us. It wasbuilt as a home and should have thatwarm, welcoming and relaxing feel – andindependent ownership is a reallyimportant influence in maintaining that.Petwood is a unique hotel withstunning grounds and a rich history, how do you maintain the highstandards that continue to resonatewith guests? We very much view our ownership ofthe hotel as that of custodians. Our roleis to preserve and enhance the buildingand its environs, ensuring a legacy forfuture generations. Our recent gardenrestoration project is an excellentexample of that. Having brought thegardens back to the renowned HaroldPeto’s original structural designs afterdecades of neglect, we are thrilled tohave secured Grade II listing for thePetwood Peto gardens to protect themfor the future. A sensitive plantingscheme nods to the garden’s history yetis more easily maintainable both for usand subsequent generations, therebyavoiding potential for any futureneglect. The Hotel is located on thelegendary home of the 617“Dambusters” Squadron, making it amust visit location for aviation buffs. But how exactly do you use thisintriguing heritage to draw people in,and how many people visit just for thehistory? Of the many draws for people visitingLincolnshire and the Petwood, aviationis definitely one of them. Central tomany of the county’s excellent aviationheritage sites, Woodhall Spa is reallywell located for visiting these and, ofcourse, the RAF connection of the hotelitself adds a special bonus for guests.ThePetwoodHotelEmma Brealey, Director of Petwood Hotel, explains how being a family business allowsthe Petwood Hotel to excel. 72-73.qxp_Layout 1 20/06/2018 09:27 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY73FAMILY BUSINESS - THE PETWOOD HOTEL Q&AWe also welcome many day visitorswho pop in to see the Squadron Barmemorabilia on their aviationpilgrimage of Lincolnshire. In fact,Petwood founders Sir Archibald andLady Grace Weigall helped set up thecinema. What relationship do the twoestablishments enjoy today? The Weigalls were great benefactors toWoodhall Spa and many of the facilitieswe enjoy in the village today are thanksto them, such as the gift of Jubilee Parkto the village for the benefit of health andwellbeing. Transforming a former sportspavilion into a cinema in 1922 was reallycutting edge for the time. In WWII theOfficers would watch the newsreels at theKinema, affectionately known as “TheFlicks in the Sticks”. Today the Kinemaboasts all the latest film releases andeven has a mobile screen for outdoorcinema experiences. To commemoratethe 75th anniversary of the Dams Raids, the Kinema hosted an outdoor screeningin our gardens of The Dam Busters. It wasa great evening enjoyed by over 200people. This time of year they can be found inamongst tall scrub and woodland, tucking into a diet ofinsects, with their winter diet made up of berries and fruit. This abundance of food coupled with milder temperaturesmeans Britain in the winter is much more hospitable thanThough the Blackcap only blessed Britain with its presence insummer, this medium-sized warbler is now a frequent visitor. Thanksto migration from Germany and north-east Europe, Blackcaps cannow be seen all year round. Lincolnshirewildlifeit was even a few decades ago. And so there’s been a hugemigratory shift among Blackcaps over the last twenty-fiveyears. Birds are often named after physical attributes and, asone might expect, the Blackcap refers to the dark skullcap-like spot on top of the male’s head. Females, on the otherhand, sport a gingery-brown cap. Though they can beeasily confused with the Marsh Tit and the Willow Tit, theBlackcap can be identified by its lack of a black bib. Despite the obvious beauty of the bird, it is theBlackcap’s song that captures the interest and imagination. Its varied repertoire of songs has earned it the moniker“mock nightingale” and has featured in poems, novels andfilm. That’s more than can be said for its fellow warblers orthe tits it’s often confused with. During its arrival in the UK, the Blackcap begins acampaign of breeding in May, and we can lay claimto about a million breeding pairs. Its nest is a neatcup and is built in brambles or scrub, where anaverage clutch of eggs between four and six will belaid. The chicks gestate inside for eleven daysbefore hatching. In a further eleven days, the chicksfledge, though they are cared for by both adultsafter leaving the nest. Though Blackcaps are abundant and are marked asbeing of least concern, there are ways in which youcan help look after them as well as the myriad of othergarden birds.
