Surrounded byfields and close to the banks of theWitham you’d be forgiven for thinkingyou were in a place even more remote, but with Boston and Sleaford just ashort drive away you won’t feel cut off. Indeed, Sue states that this is part ofthe charm - having such quiet but beingwithin easy reach of facilities is fantastic. In fact, we catch Sue following a quicksession at a local gym, proving it’s not acase of isolation, rather a haven fromthe busyness of life elsewhere in thecounty. There’s a self-contained gymroom at the property too as well as afantastic office. With 5000 square feet of space withinthe home itself, Sue says it’s been a longBeautifulsurroundings14 Copping Syke Barns is a rural wonder. Local craftsmen and buildersmade sure it was finished to the highest standards and to meit’s the ideal family home.”As Sue is moving on, the home and its surrounding fouracres of gardens are on the market and future owners will findits rural charm fascinating. The impressive gravel drivewaywhich also boasts a triple garage leads to a grand, archedfront door with a quirky and historic servant’s bell serving as adoorbell. On entry you are met with a country home feel, allexposed brick, sturdy oak doors and a light, airy feel that isboth charming and welcoming. The hallway boasts a fantastic staircase which has bespokecorn-style iron fittings and a smooth, lovingly-craftedbannister that welcomes you to the first floor. We sit in Sue’s wonderful kitchen, which incorporates a13-17:Layout 1 15/7/13 13:45 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRETODAY15HOMESbreakfast bar and a cosy living area with a huge fireplacewhich looks fantastic underneath the exposed beams andbrickwork. Sue claims this is her favourite part of the house,“I pretty much live in here, it’s perfect for relaxing in andespecially for entertaining.”Putting together the home was a feat in itself, withderelict buildings needing a whole host of structural worksuch as repointing, extensions and even new buildings. Thecollection of barns and cottages were joined up with theaddition of a garden room which gives aspects to theluxurious central courtyard and the surrounding gardenstoo. The conversion had to maintain historical features, suchas doorways and windows, and as a result you’ll seewindows with beautiful stone sills in places you may notexpect to have found them. It all adds to the light and theunique character of the property. 17 “Local craftsmen and builders made sure it wasfinished to the highest standards and to me it’s theideal family home”13-17:Layout 1 15/7/13 13:45 Page 3Discount ApplianceCentreNames you recognise, prices you wonʼtDiscount Appliance Centre Ltd, Cook House, Brunel Drive, Newark, Nottinghamshire, NG24 2FBCall us on01636 672300Mon to Sat - 9am to 5pmAlso stockists of:MERCURYDESIGNED FOR PERFECTIONand many more...www.discountappliancecentre.com13-17:Layout 1 15/7/13 13:45 Page 4Boasting two ground-floor bedrooms, sharinga central shower room, there’s plenty of room forguests. His time in the greatoutdoors has obviously influenced hiswork as it’s packed with wildlife and aspirit it’s hard to describe. We met him at his Osgodby home and chatted abouthis foray into art via his garden landscaping business.“I’ve always been interested in art from an early ageand although I’m still a gardener by trade I’ve alwayswanted to get back into it,” says Richard. “I got into stick-on stained glass art while working on restoring windowsand that has really influenced me. I’ve had the idea forstained glass style art for years but I’ve only recentlystarted to do it properly.”Richard’s art is done in deep-coloured inks on card andfor the most part depict animals and wildlife. Havinggrown up in the wolds and living on the edge of MarketRasen, he is certainly surrounded by it and this comesacross in the stylised way he shows off nature in his work. “I started off with a basic peacock design and the stylegrew from there. I’ve had pretty good feedback so far anduntil recently I’ve hidden it away but it’s been on displayas part of the recent Plank Festival in Market Rasen.”Richard describes the inks as like working withwatercolours, but more vibrant and obviously feels affinitywith each piece he does. “I name every piece I produce, some of the larger workhas a theme and my passion for animals and the rollinghills round here influences that too. I don’t see the pointof being photo-realistic, you can capture the animalsbetter in a stylised way. I like the fact they can makepeople sit up and say, wow!“Having said that, I’m still uncomfortable and gettingused to being called an artist but I’m sure I’ll get used toit!”We think you will, Richard!
