Originally fromSheffield, but brought up in Skegness, hecompleted his university days with asuccessful degree show which enabled himto travel the world. This in turn has fuelledhis imagination and work since. Look oneway in his studio in Lincoln’s plush Terracenestled in a private corner of Lincoln citycentre and you could see the clean, clinicalarchitecture of Dubai. That said, Ed’s style is very much his own.Countless sketch books, photographs and collectedephemera mean that with his imaginative approach, people are snapping up his work. A deal struck withBuckingham Fine Art mean he is represented around thecountry but some roots to the city remain. You’ll oftensee his work displayed in the window of Bailgate’s LittleRed Gallery, where owner Hazel has been so impressedwith the Cathedral paintings they are often pride ofplace in the window. A painting of the gallery, alreadybecoming a Lincoln icon, stands in Ed’s studio, cementing their relationship.Ed’s plans are to document his recent travels. Sprawling over a near two-acrespace, it’s crammed with more plants than you’ll be ableto see on the first walk round, It’s also strewn withstatues, sculptures and curios that will mean you’llwant to head in and out of its meandering paths alldays. It’s varied too. Starting in the shady, woodchippedHosta garden, which has rare examples of this toughbut beautiful plant, this shaded, peaceful area is anexcellent way of introducing yourself to Sheila’screation. The places to sit give you fantastic views thatyou can really take in the thought that’s gone into the place. The shaded area has many curios, such as an owl constructedexpertly from an old barrel and various other creatures dottedhere and there. A frog sits peeking out over a green field, ared, chicken-wire fox peeks tentatively out of a bush - it’sall very theatrical but without being overbearing andlaboured.Into the garden via the huge pond, you’re struck byhow many scarecrows Sheila has dotted around. Severaltimes during our visit we have to do a quick double-taketo make sure we aren’t being followed. Every now and again there is a figure looking back at you.Whether it’s a rag doll-like creation next to the pond, resplendent in a dress and sitting in a coveredseating area, or the seated chap looking pensiveon the other side of the water, your mind startsto play tricks. It’s all part of the fun though, and the garden appeals to both green-fingered adults and curious children alike. There’s another pond elsewhere hidden awayin between paths, and it’s nice little surprises likethis that make the garden such a treasure trove. Meanwhile, a vintage manual plough with an ash handlestands by the side of a path, which Sheila actually uses to weedthe earthen paths. As you can see, Sheila’s passion for flowers is evident. As part of a plan to growthe town by 18,000 new homes by 2030, 2500homes were approved for building in 2010. There was even talk of the town evenchanging its name to Gainsborough on Trent, but quite rightly the residents laughed this offas ridiculous.
