But if you’re aftersomething different, then Louth serves asan oasis of calm.In Louth, the town centre has retainedits high percentage of local independenttraders, many of whom have been in thearea for generations. There are the bigbrands too if you want them, but these areinterspersed with unique shops that offer afabulous mix of items you won’t findanywhere else. It’s the perfect combinationof both local and national names.Such is Louth’s quality, in recent years ithas been commended in two nationalsurveys as one of the nicest places in theUK to visit. Countryfile named it as theUK’s favourite market town in 2012 andthe Sunday Times highlighted it, alongsideStamford, as the best place to live inLincolnshire, paying particular attention toits huge number of delis, farm shops andcafes and regular markets. That local approach is very importantand throughout the year there arenumerous events that go on in Louth thatensure there’s good reason to pay a visit.QuintessentiallyLINCOLNSHIRE63 Louth has a sense ofhistory and communitythat makes for a veryspecial atmosphere61-65:Layout 1 15/7/13 14:00 Page 1www.minithreadz.com32 Upgate, Louthlouth - lincolnshireExclusivefashion and giftsfor stylish kids(0-15 years)Come and see our display stand at Revesby Show August 4thNOW OPENNew Access Centre3 Vickers Lane, Louth, LN11 9PJTel: 01507 355961Callin and find out more about Age UK Lindsey’s services:Mon - Fri: 9.30 - 3.00 Saturday: 9.30 - 2.00Information and Advice- Are you receiving all your entitlements? - We can helpHome Support Services- Help for you in the home and gardenFalls Prevention- A free home safety check and advice onpreventing fallsInsurance Services- A range of products specificallytailored for older peopleRegistered charity number 1079691IDBBOS011 06/11Looking for agreat gift idea?Lincolnshire Today’s giftsubscription for only£27.55 with free deliveryCall 01472 310301or visitwww.lincolnshiretoday.net/341GastronomicdelightsCoastalhikesHomes&GardensNauticalstyle£2.95MAY2013£2.95MAY2013CelebratingourwonderfulcoastCelebratingourwonderfulcoastGastronomicdelightsCoastalhikesHomes&GardensNauticalstyleTHEREGION’SFAVOURITECOUNTYMAGAZINETHEREGION’SFAVOURITECOUNTYMAGAZINEwww.blmgroup.co.ukwww.blmgroup.co.ukBLMGROUPGROUPBLMBLMGROUPGROUPBLMWWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NETWWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NET25 years young25 years young1st 3issues only£1Massage & Sports Therapyfed of holistic therapists•Repetitive Injuries •Muscle pain •Back pain •RelaxationOther treatments include:•Reflexology foot care •Pedicure •Hopi ear candlingTo book an appointment or arrange a home visit:Tel:01507 363296Mob:07843692144Will travel up to 35 mile radius from Louth area61-65:Layout 1 15/7/13 14:00 Page 2LINCOLNSHIRETODAY63LOUTHMuch of this is thanks to the hard workof the Louth Town Partnership, whowork hard to maintain the fabulousvillage-style atmosphere. In recent years, for example, when shops have fallenempty, the team have filled the gaps withphotos and images of Louth in the past, andinvited visitors to pass on their memories of thetown to be displayed – a simple touch but one which makes theplace look that little bit brighter.Special celebrations for Lincolnshire Day and occasions like theVictorian Family Fayre have shown the town at its best, with manyof the traders opening their doors, often dressing up in periodclothing and hosting a number of special events – not the kind ofthing you’d find in your usual town centre. Before Christmas too aspecial competition encouraged the various shops to present themost attractive window displays which led to some eye-catchingfrontages – with Mini Threadz, the children’s retailer, taking thetop prize. One recent event that certainly captured the spirit of Louth wasits first ever Vintage Day. Prizes were awarded to the best outfits andin the junior category they went to Rachel “Ginger” Wraggand Annaleigh MacLeod, who both regularly attend Louth’sLindy Hop dance group at the Mayfair Family Club, one ofmany community activities that go on across the town.Alan Mumby, Chairman of the Festival committee, says,“We want to say a big thank you to everyone involved in theevent, especially the team at Cobbles Bar who have been agreat support to us. We’ve received some brilliant feedbackalready. The summer sunshine meant that the Cornmarketwas the perfect setting for dancing in the streets! A Visual Arts Trail ran throughoutthe event, shining the spotlight on thevarious locations in the town, and theproceedings came to end with the LouthFood Festival.Louth is famous for its food with morehigh quality cafes and restaurants thenyou’ll find in most similarly-sized towns. It’s at the heart of Poacher country and, though the Mayor’s infamous sausagecostume when the Olympic torch came totown raised a few eyebrows, it did at leastput local food in the spotlight. At theFestival, for the dedicated foodie, therewas a huge range of local produce totaste and buy, representing the best thatthe ‘Larder of Lincolnshire’ can offer plusa few international treats, while many ofLouth’s artisan food shops were open toadd to the festive atmosphere providedby almost a hundred market stalls snakingdown Eastgate.Later this year the Worlds Words Festivalbases itself in Louth. This hugely popularliterary event is now back for its twelfthyear on 16th to 20th October and itpromises to be a rich celebration of allthings Lincolnshire including the return ofRural Reflections Day, which is a realtreasure trove for anyone inspired by localhistory. As Councillor Adam Grist pointsout, “There really is something foreveryone, from rather risqué comedy anddance events in libraries to a knitting, wetfelted and needle felted dragonfly andbutterfly workshop. Many of the eventsare free.”Events such as these showcase the hugevariety of entertainment you can find inLouth, but every day of the week there’ssomething to discover in its fascinatingshops and beautiful walks. I hadhandfuls of Corgi and Dinky cars and thePorsche models were always the ones Icherished the most. I even had a Porschepolice car as part of my ‘Race and Chase’game – a dodgy imitation of the farsuperior Scalextric slot-car set.So, even though I can’t afford one nowI’m all grown up with kids of my own – Inever pass up the opportunity to borrowa Porsche. The 911 in particular seems tohave an effect on everyone – includingmy little lad. Why is this? Well, I reckonit’s the classic coupe shape – and thepure ‘racing car’ yowl the rear-enginedbeast makes when it comes ‘alive’. It’s aniconic sports car – simple as that. The current Carrera 4 builds upon thelegend further by providing all-wheeldrive. The four-by-four grip is suppliedvia wizardry known as Porsche TractionManagement. This precisely distributespower to the front and rear axles as roadand driving conditions change – makingfor a thrilling, responsive, yet fantasticallystable drive.Unbelievably, despite the shot ofadrenaline the 911 Carrera 4 gives youevery time you go out for a spin, itdoesn’t gobble up fuel. On a trip fromthe Midlands to Norfolk I averaged30mpg. That isn’t bad when youconsider a 3.4 litre lump is shoehornedinto the car.Behind the wheel, that powerhouseenables magic to happen every time youtouch the throttle pedal. Fuel is injectedfractions of a second prior tocombustion, the engine respondingspontaneously to even the slightestmovement of your right foot. This isn’tonly the case when accelerating, but alsowhen lifting off. The seven speed manualtransmission adds to the entertainmentmix. Its slick action soon makes it seementirely natural to shift all the way up tothat seventh cog on the straights. As for looks, well I’ve touched a littleon those already. The shape of thePorsche 911 is the ‘meat in thesandwich’. Aside from brute force, it’swhy you buy the car. So, subtlety is whatthe present Carrera 4 is all about. Lookclose enough and you’ll seemodifications to the nose and tail andthe more overt use of lightingtechnology: bi-xenon headlights andgorgeous, sparkly, LED daytime drivinglights are fitted as standard.
