Wespeak to Mike James about his MiniCooper Sport. When was it made?It was first registered in June 2001,nine months after production ended.Has it always looked this good?Pretty much. It’s one of the last Ministo be built. This is the colour in which itleft the factory, and the inside it still hasthat lovely ‘new car’ smell. How rare it is?Everyone knows ‘real’ Minis, and theyused to be a common sight on the roads, but the very last models, in thiscondition, are pretty rare.Does it travel far? No. I bought it second-hand at the endof October 2001, with just 128 miles onthe clock – and the mileage has only justpassed 6,200 this year. It’s only taxed forsix months of the year, and stays in thegarage during the winter – and in thesummer too, if the weather’s a bit damp. Why was the mileage so low?Apparently a man bought it for hiswife, but she didn’t like it.You don’t have many problems with it,then? Not really – except last year, when itfailed its MoT test because the horndidn’t work. The steering wheel had tocome off to fix it!What’s the engine? It’s a 1,275cc with fuel injection.Delivers just about twice as much poweras the first Mini, produced in 1959.My other car’s a… Mini Cooper SportDo you have a thing for Minis, then?Very much so! This one feels like a‘proper’ Mini. The rides a bit hard, but itcorners as if it’s on rails. I started theTrent Valley Mini Owners Club, andorganise the Mini Day at Normanby Hallnear Scunthorpe. I’ve done that for eightyears, as well as the Mini Day at theBrayford in Lincoln for about six. What would it cost me to get one?I recently saw another two-ownerversion in the same spec as this one, butin red with silver, for sale in London. Theasking price was £6,000, but it hadcovered 50,000 miles. I’ll never part withmine, though.Do you have a very specialclassic car, something reallyout of the ordinary? Chevrolet are certainly no newcomerto the SUV market. In fact they came upwith the first ever car of this kind - thenow 75-year-old Chevy Suburban. So it’shardly surprising that the Trax delivers. Our test car, courtesy of CharlesWarner of Lincoln, was the modest 1.4litre petrol turbo, although the car isavailable in two and four-wheel drive, achoice of engines: 1.4 and 1.6 petrolturbos through to a 1.7 diesel turbo andavailable in LS or the higher-spec LTversion. In short, there’s a Trax to caterfor most driving styles and budgets. Our 1.4 turbocharged petrol respondsnicely from lower in the rev range andsurprises us as we pull away through theLincoln traffic. The slightly elevateddriving position means you can read theroad ahead better too and there’s anifty, simple to use, large touchscreen in the centre console ,which comes with all the LTmodels as standard. Thisenables us to link our phone’ssat nav to the car, listen tomusic, stream tracks and operatephonecalls hands free. It even allowsdrivers to use Siri voice commands ontheir iPhone. But, best of all, it offers a superb colourview all around which makes reversingand parking an absolute doddle. Out of the city, the Trax comes into itsown especially on A and B roads where itswallows up the many potholes anduneven roads still awaiting resurfacing. Its rugged good looks help the Traxstand out from the competition but youcertainly don’t sacrifice comfort for looks.Inside there seems plenty of space andsome well thought out storage areas(nineteen in total), good head andlegroom and, thanks to ubber-flexibleseating, a multitude of configurations –one of which even allows the frontpassenger seat to be foldedflat so it can handle weirdly large andawkward loads. There’s the added benefit of highground clearance, underbody protectionand wheelarch cladding which all help tomake the Trax a more resilient choice andwill undoubtedly come into its own comewinter time when facing much rougherconditions or at county and horse showsin the summer. And, as the all-wheel drivesystem is fully electronic there’s nofiddling or messing to get it engaged.Fuel economy is also range toppingthanks to stop start technology and sixspeed transmission, returning a healthy62.8 mpg from the 1.7 litre diesel variantwith only 120g/km of CO2 while our 1.4LT petrol manages 44.1mpg and149g/km.Our verdict? The Chevrolet Trax ticks allthe boxes in the mini SUV sector and isan excellent choice for those with a familyor those who enjoy outdoor pursuits. It’sa very capable crossover vehicle thatcan be enjoyed in or out of the cityand with its simple to useinfotainment system should provea real winner with buyers. LINCOLNSHIRETODAY77SOCIAL SCENE77:Layout 1 15/7/13 12:48 Page 178 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYEQUINEAlternativehorsepowerWith the showing season is in full swing, howcan you make sure your horse gets theresafely? It used to be common to see horses hacking toshows or events, but these days many more travel instyle and this usually means a trailer or horsebox. Asequine specialist Brenda Gilligan, Senior Solicitor atWilkin Chapman points out, the law relating to horsetransport is extensive and complex, but the consequencesof ignoring it can be serious.Brenda explains, “There are some basic points to look out for.Buying a horse that will load is a good start! Buy your trailer orbox from a reputable source and have it fully checked out by aspecialist mechanic as to condition and identity before paying forit. Scams involving horse transport are widespread on internetsale sites. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.“Ensure the trailer or box is adequate for the job, as is thetowing vehicle, not just in terms of towing capacity, but brakingcapacity as well. The Trailer Gross Weight must not exceed thetowing capacity of the towing vehicle. The manufacturers’recommended towing limit will be found in the vehicle’shandbook or on the Vehicle Identification Number Plate on thechassis. As a rough guide, the trailer should weigh no morethan 85% of the kerb weight ofthe towing vehicle. Don’t forgetto take the weight of items youcarry other than the horses intoaccount.“Check you have the correct licencefor the vehicle you want to tow or drive. Thisdepends to some extent on whether you passed your drivingtest before 1st January 1997 or after 19th January 2013. It isadvisable to take a towing course and test if you are unused totowing.”Horse owners are always advised to make sure they keep theirvehicles in good condition and that the floor remains solid, thatall the electrics and brakes work and that linking cables are safe.Visit www.gov.uk/towing and www.ntta.co.uk to see a checklistto use before a journey. Sadly, a number of horses have sufferedhorrendous injuries or even death due to a rotten floor givingway, or a brake cable snapping. One excellent security tip is to paint your postcode on topof your box or trailer, so it can easily be seen by policehelicopters if it’s stolen. You can get insurance linked tospecialist equine breakdown and recovery services, whichwould certainly be well worth it if you end up stranded milesfrom home.As Brenda says, “You may need an operator’s licence and aCertificate of Competence. The operator’s licence is neededwhere you transport animals in a business context, whichcould cover going to shows, even if that is not your main job.The Certificate involves training of those handling andtransporting horses, usually in a professional capacity.”Though this may seem an inconvenience, it’s worth it toensure your horse enjoys comfort and security throughout thejourney.Scamsinvolving horsetransport are widespreadon internet sale sites.
