< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYBUSINESS LINCS.There’s been several high-profile storiesrecently that have highlighted the factthat British workers are the ones whoslave away the most at their desks in allof Europe. The UK average shows thatthe number of hours actually worked is3.1 hours higher than the average for thenumber of hours collectively agreed - abigger gap than anywhere else in Europe. This of course leaves little time toexercise or get fit as it comes way downthe list after looking after families, seeingfriends, housework and a whole host ofother commitments. In Lincolnshire, however, there’s a realonus being put on linking work withfitness and more is being done to ensureworkers are in good shape. After all, ahealthy workforce is a more productiveone. It’s often said that an office runsmore effectively full of motivated, perkypeople rather than those that are friedand wired on coffee. Being fit canincrease alertness, concentration and alot of other beneficial qualities in staffand of course can lengthen life andreduce stress. Everyone can be winners allround.Competitive spiritTeams of budding sports players fromvarious businesses around the countyhave also recently celebrated theirsuccess at the first ever LincolnshireWorkplace Challenge Games.Over eighty people from ten separatebusinesses came together to compete inthe Games which were held at LincolnChrist’s Hospital School, includingNicholsons, Langleys Solicitors, Ruddocks,Anglian Water, Lincolnshire Cooperativeand Ambitions Personnel. The Workplace Challenge Games, organised by Lincolnshire Sport, aredesigned to build confidence, loyalty andteam spirit as well as promote health andfitness, and featured teams ofcompetitors from every size and kind ofLincolnshire organisation. In fact, this latest model is being heralded as thefastest Nissan GT-R ever and Nissan have drawn ondecades of racing experience gathered by Nismo, thebrand’s motorsport specialists.Under the hood, is a 3.8-litre V6 VR38DETT petrolengine rated at 600hp and 481 lb ft of torque – thistranslates into a 0-60mph sprint time of just 2.5seconds (0.3 seconds quicker than the standard GT-R)Styling wise the bodywork is more aggressive-looking and aerodynamic and features redesignedbumpers, plus a rear carbon spoiler and special high-performance tyres. Interior wise the Nismo is extremelyseductive too and has to be seen to be believed.Next up in our magnificent 7 is the mid-engined4C - designed and engineered by Alfa Romeo andbuilt at the Maserati plant in Modena and features acarbon-fibre monocoque structure giving the car anexceptionally low weight while maintaining structuralrigidity. There’s anew distinctive look, with new headlightsand tail lights, bespoke bumper stylingand 18-inch ‘Cadiz’ alloy wheels asstandard. It’snot too surprising that these figures existas this age group contains our ‘risktakers’ – young men, and some women, who are willing to take risks! Theypartake in adventurous activities, so whenthey get behind the wheel of a car theboundaries as to what they can andcannot do are unclear, so they willchallenge themselves by daring toexceed their own ability.Recognising that there are goodyoung drivers must be temperedwith the fact they lack experienceso the ‘whole package’ as a gooddriver is not quite complete. Thereare many educational initiativesaround the country that aredelivered into schools andLincolnshire has one of the mosthard hitting, emotional andsuccessful interventions that has, inits seven years of operation, seen a70% reduction in the number ofyoung drivers killed or seriously injured.2Fast2Soon is a theatre production of areal story acted out before their eyes.Previously delivered to around threehundred young people in one sitting atone of the many theatres around thecounty, it now has only a cast of fourdelivered at any school with a 5x5 metrespace and 120 chairs.Telling the story of Kirsty Pay, who wasthe rear seat passenger in a car driven byher best friend’s boyfriend, it shows theparents receiving the news, the anguishof the police officer who has to deliverthe ‘death message’ face to face, accusations between the parents as theyblame each other for the loss of theirchild and the pain of formally identifyingtheir daughter. This is just one story ofthe three people that died that night –had the driver survived he wouldcertainly have faced prosecution anda possible prison sentence.By providing this as an emotionalexperience, it’s hoped a young drivercan moderate and temper those‘experiments’ in their driving habits.Pass Plus is designed to give youngdrivers additional training that hasnot been provided in the drivinglessons they have already received ontheir path to their licence. If 2Fast2Soon is not in your child’ssixth form, ask the Head Teacher, theHead of Governors or the Head ofSixth Form why it isn’t.Don’t wait to be likeKirsty’s parentsYoung drivers in Lincolnshire are one of our mostvulnerable road users.
