< Previous70 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCYCLINGNo doubt many of us paid a keeninterest in the events the other side ofthe Humber Bridge this month as theTour de France set off from Yorkshire. Themillions of people who lined the routeand those who watched on TV illustratethe increased interest in cycling at themoment – helped by the fact that it’s asport Britain happens to be particularlygood at.In fact, the number of adults cyclingonce a week in England is continuing toboom with 132,000 more adults ridingregularly now than were last year. Thisbrings the total number of adultsregularly riding their bikes up to 2.1million, according to Sport England. IanDrake, British Cycling’s Chief Executive, says, “The fact that cycling is continuingan upward trend is of course in partdown to the amazing successes we’reseeing on the world stage with Britain’scyclists riding high. But medals and rolemodels alone cannot transform Britaininto a nation of people on bikes.”With the excitement of the Tour, andhopefully some good weather, it’sunsurprising that many of us havedecided to swap four wheels for two thissummer. It’s certainly a great way toexplore all that Lincolnshire has to offer.British Cycling themselves are makinggreat use of the increased interest byoffering a number of led ridesthroughout the summer. In partnership with Skyride Local,Lincolnshire Sport is encouragingindividuals, families and groups to get fitand meet new people by dusting off theirbikes throughout the summer monthsand take to the saddle. Skyride Localevents are open to everyone and they’reorganised and guided by British Cycling-trained Ride Leaders, who are on hand tooffer encouragement and supportthroughout. There are rides for all ages, with varying levels from easy-goingthrough to more challenging rides.Watch out in August for an easygoingjaunt around Fossedyke on Sunday 3rdAugust, with the chance to spot plenty ofboats and birds alongside the canals, andif you need some encouragement there’sa pub at the end. The following Sunday aride spanning Birchwood and HartsholmeNature Park is referred to as a RideSteady event, designed to give you arewarding cycling experience at a slow toleisurely pace.British Cycling Ride Leader RayWhitehouse says, “These rides are notonly a great form of exercise, they are agreat chance to meet new people. Thereare so many opportunities to get out onyour bike with Sky Ride Local and enjoyLincolnshire’s fantastic countryside. Help is athand, though, as women andgirls in Lincolnshire, inparticular, are getting evenmore opportunity to take partin the sport. A funding boostfrom Sportivate has enabledclubs and organisations acrossthe county to run specific discounted taster sessions.Lottery funding comes from Sport England to each county tohelp encourage ‘semi-sporty’ teenagers aged eleven to 25 takepart in six-weeks of sport sessions. To the delight ofspectators, the two aircraft then flewtogether at the end of the Battle ofMemorial Flight Display. One of the other themes of the Showwas ISTAR 14 – Intelligence, Surveillance,Target Acquisition & Reconnaissance, theprimary role of RAF Waddington. TheShow highlighted how the information isvital to the force commander on thebattlefield. To supply this resource, theRAF operates a variety of aircraftequipped with world-leadingreconnaissance systems. With thesethemes in mind it was particularly fittingthat the Waddington-based E-3D Sentryof 8 Squadron, the Rivet Joint from 51Squadron and the Sentinel from 5Squadron provided the curtain-raiser toboth days of the Show. With its unique and eye-catching flyingdisplay, the Dutch Hunter won first prizefor the most polished displaydemonstrating the power andmanoeuvrability of the aircraft followedby the GrobTutor. In the Static category, the Slovak L39 won the first prizefollowed by the Italian KC767.Paul Sall, the Airshow’s director, says,“The Airshow has once again been anexciting opportunity for all members ofthe family to view tremendous flyingdisplays and a wide variety of groundexhibits showcasing the work of the RAFand its partner organisations.
