My wife thinks they’vemixed up the records, as my idea of looking after my body is grabbing a biteto eat when driving home, having forgotten to take lunch yet again and then aquick change of clothes before shooting out to some press event or societydo - where, try as I might to avoid those calorie laden treats, I just don’t havethe willpower. So, spurred on by the though of getting my body to catch up with my bloodpressure and become the athlete that my inner being so wants to be, I find myself at oneof those extreme work out classes. The fitness trainer seems a great guy who ‘sseemingly too polite to ask what unholy cocktail of fat laden food and empty alcoholiccalories have been teemed down my throat over the years and places me towards theback of the class where, presumably, I won’t hurt anyone should I pass out.I feel utterly exhausted, but great, afterwards - having accomplished what seemed likethe impossible. The problem is, of course, that this was only the warm up and, althoughI am always hugely enthusiastic about new things, the overwhelming feelings of beingdizzy and sick over the next half an hour or so aren’t inspiring, nor the tinglingsensation in my left arm which turns out to be nothing more than pins and needles. Ofcourse, being a man I tough it out to the end of the session but my head looks like it ‘sabout to explode for the next few hours. The next day I awake to find I can hardly sit up in bed for my morning cup of tea, letalone put on a pair of socks. And, as we all know, pain is the body’s way of telling yousomething is amiss, the logical thing is to take things a little slower - while I can, atleast, still dress myself . It also calls for lots of ibuprofen and glucosamine.I’m not about to become one of those fitness nerds though that can all too easilybecome obsessed dullards – you only need to glance at the lonely hearts columns tosee the countless people who are blindingly fit, eat nothing but spinach and avoidalcohol, who still don’t have a partner to realise that’s not a winning formula . Fitness fanatics, I salute you. But, take a leaf out of nature’s book and enjoy the greatoutdoors – take part in the wonderful Lincolnshire walk we have in this month’s issue, enjoy a day by the water’s edge or countryside and take in the sights of Lincolnshire’swonderful wildlife , treat yourself to a little retail therapy, and share a night with friends atone of the county’s many social events . Life is all about keeping a balance and what better way than sitting in the shadow of thecathedral enjoying a pimms or a gourmet meal at one of Lincolnshire’s finest restaurants? As we always say, life’s not a dress rehearsal for the real thing so, don’t leave things tilltomorrow when you can do them today. As such these individuals are usually releasedand told to turn up at a hearing which – surprise, surprisethey are never seen at, or heard of again. How can this be given the number of unemployedindividuals still out there ? As for workers originating from outside the EuropeanUnion being expelled if they earn less than a certain amountof money (I seem to recall £35,000 per annum beingquoted). Wouldn’t this mean most foreign NHS staff andcare workers? How on earth is that ever going to work?? R DennisonLincolnIll Conceived Government plans?Dear Lincolnshire Today,I understand that, in a few years’ time, the Red Arrows will be retiringtheir Hawk aircraft and can’t help wondering if this is some ill-conceived plan byour Government to disband the world-famous aerobatic team? On the other hand, if they are allowed to continue, will their new aircraft, be bought Britishas Chancellor George Osborne promised in his “march of the makers” Budget, or will they betempted to purchase cheaper, foreign planes? The problem as I see it is that we are currently spending a mere two per cent of GDP ondefence equipment which seems bizarre given the problems we are facing in this day and ageand this is a far cry from the manifesto promising: “ to spend more on equipment. Replace ournuclear deterrent. And not to further cut the size of the regular army.”R MarfleetSpaldingREADERS’lettersWe’d love to hear from you.
