As of writing, many retailers have expressed their desire that shoppers continue to wear masks and observe social distancing rules as before. Many readers, meanwhile, have stated how they will be continuing to wear masks despite the change in rules. For some places and occasions – such as haircuts – it will be easier to forget the mask. However, for going shopping and for bigger gatherings of people, I’d still recommend wearing your mask. We’re not out of the pandemic yet. There’s still ample opportunity to get overwhelmed by infections and deaths. Whether you choose to mask or not, there’s plenty of reasons to get out in Lincolnshire this august – more than I have space to list here. You’ll just have to read our what’s on pages, our lovely seaside feature, and our health & fitness piece for yourselves. Funded by the European Regional Development Fund and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP, the ‘The Bridge’ Advanced Engineering Research and Development facility, due for completion in spring 2022, will act as a centre for collaborative research and development between business and industry partners and the University of Lincoln. The concept has been co-developed with a working group of industry-based scientists and with engagement from a consortium of more than 20 companies in the region, including Siemens, Dynex, Micrometric and Teledyne e2v. Located alongside the Lincoln Science and Innovation Park, the building will house £1.2 million worth of equipment in specialist laboratories including advanced electron and atomic force microscopes, as well as surface analysis and thermo-mechanical instrumentation. © Shutterstock/Neil Mitchell Boston Borough Council will be working with partners to develop a bid for the town to receive ‘city status’ as part of a competition launched to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee next year. The Queen has approved a competition to grant the rare civic honour of ‘city status’ to a select number of towns and cities in the UK for the first time in a decade. Councils have until December 8 to apply and will be judged on civic pride, heritage and innovation. Portfolio for Heritage, Cllr Richard Austin, said: “The bid would be developed with partners and its submission would be subject to Council approval later in the year. The competition gives us great opportunity to highlight Boston’s heritage and its worldwide connections by showcasing the people and places that make Boston so unique and worthy of such an accolade.” Lincolnshire residents invited to put best foot forward Lincolnshire residents are being invited to don their walking gear, lace up their boots, and unite against dementia by signing up to Alzheimer’s Society’s Memory Walk this Autumn. Hundreds of Alzheimer’s Society supporters will put their best foot forward at 20 venues throughout the UK alongside family, friends and colleagues to raise money for the charity. Over a year since the pandemic began, people with dementia are still bearing the brunt of coronavirus and demand for Alzheimer’s Society’s services is still increasing. Memory Walk will bring together people who have been personally affected by dementia, those who want to walk to remember a loved one, and people looking for a fun-filled activity to raise money for charity at 20 locations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Supporters can also opt to walk on their own, or with loved ones, on the paths, pavements, parks or pebbles in a location of their choosing throughout September. Sign up for free at: alzheimers.org.uk/memorywalk. 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:19 Page 1£16m regeneration project to begin in Gainsborough Plans to build 138 new homes in Gainsborough have received final sign off from the government to begin the works. Gainsborough-based housing charity Acis Group is to develop the new homes in partnership with West Lindsey District Council and Homes England as part of their commitment to the regeneration of the town. The £16 million plans will regenerate the land off Bowling Green Road after planning permission was granted last year and will be built by developers Vistry Partnerships. And now, thanks to the approval of £5.2 million funding from Homes England, the regeneration work can begin. Close to the popular Mercer Wood, the site will offer residents a mix of housing to either buy or rent including homes for outright sale, affordable rent, shared ownership and much-needed, fully accessible, specialist housing for older people. It will create a new type of community for Gainsborough, with inter-generational living and shared services at its heart. A new air ambulance has taken the sky as Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance (LNAA) launches its second helicopter, which will help to save lives on the Lincolnshire coast. The helicopter has taken over from the charity’s Critical Care Car (CCC), which has been operational on the East Coast from 1 June. Since then, doctors and paramedics have responded to 31 emergencies in the area. The expansion of LNAA’s service comes as the UK emerges from Covid restrictions and it’s anticipated an influx of visitors will flock to popular seaside towns for a summer staycation. The second aircraft, a black, white and blue AW109, will be based at an airfield near Mablethorpe, ready to respond to incidents along the coast. The charity’s yellow Ambucopter will continue to attend emergencies across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, helping those who need it most. The charity’s second helicopter will remain operational until 31 August. Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance launch second helicopter Bomber Command marks milestone anniversary The International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) near Lincoln has marked the 85th anniversary of the formation of this legendary force with a public service. The service saw both veterans of Bomber Command joined by current serving personnel and the families and supporters of the Command. On the 14th July 1936 the Command was formed, initially to act as a deterrent to aggression and then later as the means to take the offensive as Europe descended into War. For the next 32 years, until the creation of Strike Command, Bomber Command defended our freedom, supported humanitarian missions and helped to keep the peace. Its contribution in the Second World War cannot be understated – without the bravery, service and sacrifice of those who served and supported their work, the War could not have been won. A million men and women, from across the world, supported the Command in WW2 alone, with 57,861 paying the ultimate price, more than serve in the Royal Air Force today. Their average age at death was just 23. Each of these sacrifices are individually marked on the Walls of Names which surround the IBCC’s towering Spire Memorial, the only place in the world where all these losses are honoured. The Spire provided the focus point for the anniversary service. The service will concluded with a flypast from the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’s Dakota at 12.30. © Phil Crow 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:19 Page 2latest news Grant to fund more sustainable farming in the Lincolnshire Wolds © Shutterstock/Gill Kennett Lincolnshire County Council has been awarded over £280,000 for farmers and landowners in the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The funding, from Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), is for farmers and land managers to carry out projects that support nature recovery, mitigate the impacts of climate change, provide opportunities for people to discover, enjoy and understand the landscape and cultural heritage, or support nature-friendly sustainable farm businesses. Cllr Colin Davie, executive member for Environment at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “The funding will enable our farmers to adapt to the future changes in agriculture, whilst supporting and managing the natural environment, cultural heritage and public access. “This will also build on the great work already taking place in the Lincolnshire Wolds AONB via the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service, a jointly funded partnership between Defra, East Lindsey District Council, West Lindsey District Council, North East Lincolnshire Council and Lincolnshire County Council.” Bransby Horses acquires song rights to highlight rescue work Bransby Horses have acquired the song rights to ‘You Will Be Found’ from smash Broadway musical, Dear Evan Hansen as part of their Bransby Big Sing project. Tara Stafford-Allen, External Welfare Officer at Bransby Horses and Musical Director at Lincolnshire Vocal Academy (LVA), set up the Bransby Big Sing project to help promote the work of the charity and bring people together during Lockdown 3.0. Tara encouraged vocal enthusiasts at Bransby Horses, members of the LVA and pupils from Partney Church of England Primary School to get involved in recording the song. In all over 20 performers took part, along with numerous volunteers who helped produce the heart-warming accompanying video, which showcases the transformative affect the charity has on so many equines. Tara chose ‘You Will Be Found’, written by The Greatest Showman composers and Oscar winners, Pasek & Paul, because of its emotional lyrics. HRH Princess Anne officially opens police, fire and ambulance station in Lincoln HRH Princess Anne visited Lincoln recently to officially open the joint ambulance, fire and police station at South Park and to visit staff involved in the response to the COVID pandemic. Although the tri-service station was fully operational in late 2019, the pandemic has prevented an official opening from taking place to date. HRH was greeted by representatives from all three emergency services, as well as county councillors and staff. Joint funded by Lincolnshire County Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner and £7.5m of government funding, the £21m tri-service emergency centre is an example of “exceptional” collaborative working. HRH Princess Anne had a tour of the building, meeting operational staff from all three emergency services who showcased a range of equipment and resources, including a special meet and greet with police dog ‘Frankie’ from Lincolnshire Police’s Dog Unit. She then officially opened the building. Her visit concluded with a visit to the County Emergency Centre – the centre of much multi-agency activity during the COVID pandemic. 06-08.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:19 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 9 Auto Trail Motorhome Rental Travel in Luxury Reserve Your Ride Check out the availability and book your trip with a £250 deposit.
