The seaside has long been celebrated as an ideal day out or fun quick break for families and friends; a visit is a classic British tradition. With 50 miles of coastline, Lincolnshire has a plethora of popular resorts. Skegness, Cleethorpes and Mablethorpe, with their golden sands, all present a traditional seaside experience, offering a wealth of attractions and activities, whether you are looking to build castles on the beachfront, chow down on fish and chips and a stick of rock, or try an exhilarating ride at a fair. Having become an even more desirable location in the face of COVID- 19 and restrictions on international travel, the seaside has provided a much-needed breath of fresh air for many, finally leaving the home for a trip. Skegness Amongst the most famous and one of the first seaside resorts in the UK, Skegness, with its vintage Victorian pier (dating to 1881) and promenade, has everything one would expect. Having been awarded Blue Flag status, it has been named one of the cleanest beaches in the world and holds the Jolly Fisherman as its mascot and the Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower as a key landmark. A walk along the front will offer plenty of entertainment, from bowling to escape rooms and go-karting, to the beach bar. Meanwhile rides and roller coasters accommodating all ages provide a thrill at funfairs, whereas a calmer moment can be found with the donkeys or relaxing in a deck chair with a warm donut. Though one may consider jumping into the sea, there is an outdoor swimming pool too. Skegness is also a perfect location for beside the seaside… 52 Á beside the seaside… 50-53.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:46 Page 252 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY AT THE SEASIDE those wanting to get to know the water and marine life a little better. Snoop around the aquarium to spot jellyfish, sharks, and octopuses, or see rescued and rehabilitated seals from the Lincolnshire coast, as well as penguins, reptiles, and tropical butterflies at Natureland Seal Sanctuary. Even more wildlife can be taken in down the way at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve, a bird observatory presenting views across a large stretch of unspoilt coastline - as we sit in summer, spot the Skylarks in song. Mablethorpe With miles of sandy beach, dunes, and a nature reserve, Mablethorpe is considered a slightly calmer seaside location. Like Skegness, it also holds the Blue Flag award, fairgrounds, a seal sanctuary (which in fact also features over 60 different species including meerkats and more), and crazy golf amongst other typical seaside activities. It additionally hosts a long-established sand train. Mablethorpe’s gentle waves and tides mean a variety of water sports are regularly enjoyed too, allowing for everything from simple swimming to wind surfing, sailing, kayaking, and canoeing, while the Aquapark offers further activities. Sandcastle competitions are also held as well as the Illuminations Switch On event, markets, and bike nights. Along the promenade there are plenty of places to eat and drink and one will come across the iconic Bathing Beauties beach huts. A few strides away is Queens Park, with its manicured gardens, and tennis courts, a boating lake, and putting green. © Shutterstock /V illan Photos courtesy of Natureland Skegness 50-53.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:46 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 53 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY AT THE SEASIDE The future of both Mablethorpe and Skegness is looking bright, with the towns securing £48.4 million from the Government’s Towns Fund for projects aimed at creating a more attractive place to live, work and play, and to boost the local economy, leading to more jobs for local people. One of these projects would involve, at Skegness Foreshore, using existing structures around the boating lake to create an outdoor events arena for activities such as concerts, light festivals, and outdoor cinema with associated improvements to local facilities. Cleethorpes Once just a fishing village, Cleethorpes became a bathing resort flocked to via train in the 19th century. Attracting tourists were its large beach, promenade, seafront gardens (which have won a Green Flag), and boating lake, which still remain today, with alterations of course. The pier, for instance, which opened in 1873, was initially much longer, but cut short during World War II in fear of it being a defensive vulnerability. Another Blue Flag winner, sit on the beach in the sun, paddle in the waters (depending on how far out the tide is!), or get active with paddle boarding and kite surfing. With a traditional promenade, hit the famous arcades and slot machines, or have fun with the family while bowling, playing crazy golf, and spending time on rides. One may also ride the lollipop road train along the seafront, taking in views of the beach, sea, and flower beds, or take a quick run up Ross Castle, which might look like the ruins of a Medieval castle but was actually built in 1885 as a visitor attraction and offers a spot to look over Cleethorpes promenade. Alternatively, the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway provides a chance to experience one of the country’s oldest seaside miniature railways. Meanwhile a stones throw from the beach sits a zoo full of exotic animals, from lemurs to axolotls. Lincolnshire’s seaside has a lot to offer, with plenty of spots to stay, whether that be a hotel, B&B, holiday park, or caravan, on top of first-class fish and chips, golden sands, and a wide variety of entertainment. © Shutterstock /Simon O'Neill Photography Scooter 207 Roman Bank, Skegness Tel: 01754 768006 Wheelchair £5.00 per day £25.00 per week £25 r efundable Deposit Winter Storage Only £75 include a Service for only £25 extra Scooters kept securely and charged weekly Service & Repairs We have an up to date fully equipped Service Centre to help with any breakdowns or repairs £12.00 per day £65.00 per week £50 r efundable Deposit 50-53.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:47 Page 454 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY COUNTY MOTORING Ferrari 296 GTB Prestige This month we’re profiling a quartet of stunning luxury vehicles that add a touch of prestige parked outside your home or office. guaranteed guaranteed 54-57.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:52 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 55 COUNTY MOTORING Ferrari 296 GTB The 296 GTB, the latest evolution of Maranello’s mid-rear-engined two-seater berlinetta, was premiered today during an online event broadcast on Ferrari’s social media and web channels. The 296 GTB redefines the whole concept of fun behind the wheel, guaranteeing pure emotions not just when pushing the car to its limits, but also in day-to-day driving situations. The 296 GTB ushers in an authentic revolution for Ferrari as it introduces a new engine type to flank the marque’s multi-award-winning 8- and 12-cylinder power units: a new 663 cv 120° V6 coupled with an electric motor capable of delivering a further 122 kW (167 cv). This is the first 6-cylinder engine installed on a road car sporting the Prancing Horse badge; it unleashes its massive 830 cv total power output to deliver previously unthinkable performance levels and an innovative, exhilarating and unique soundtrack. The car’s name, which combines its total displacement (2992 l) and number of cylinders was chosen, with the addition of the GTB (Gran Turismo Berlinetta) acronym in finest Ferrari tradition, to underscore this new engine’s epoch-changing importance to Maranello. It is not simply the living, beating heart of the 296 GTB, but it also ushers in a new V6 era that has its roots deep in Ferrari’s unparalleled 70- year-plus experience in motor sports. The 296 GTB’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system guarantees it is an incredibly usable car as well as cutting pedal response times to zero and delivering a 25km range in all- electric eDrive mode. The car’s compact dimensions and the introduction of innovative dynamic control systems as well as meticulously honed aero ensure that the driver will instantly experience its astonishing agility and responsiveness to commands. Its sporty, sinuous design and extremely compact dimensions also visually underscore its exceptional modernity, brilliantly referencing the likes of the 1963 250 LM, the perfect marriage of simplicity and functionality. BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé is a car that delivers on so many fronts, combining sporting elegance with driving pleasure and, with five full-size seats, a roomy cabin and a versatile luggage area, it also represents modern functionality that is hard to emulate. BMW has raised the bar even higher with the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, building on the success of its predecessor. The latest version offers even sharper looks, improved driving dynamics, a superior engine line-up and even more interior space. Like its recently updated BMW 4 Series siblings, the third body variant in the range adopts the brand’s new design language, along with a refined premium ambience in the cabin and a wide array of innovations in the areas of control/operation and connectivity. Four doors, five full-size seats, a large wide- opening boot and a versatile luggage compartment also ensures the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé retains its characteristic strengths in both everyday driving and on longer trips. Jaguar F-TYPE R-Dynamic Black The perfectly proportioned and extraordinarily beautiful Jaguar F-TYPE is now more distinctive than ever. New R- Dynamic Black models further heighten the purity and presence that set Jaguar’s definitive sports car apart. Developed from the 300PS four-cylinder and 450PS V8 R-Dynamic Coupé and Convertible, these exclusive additions to the line-up offer an enhanced specification and an even more luxurious, crafted interior. F-TYPE’s pure, sculpted form is accentuated by the Black Exterior Pack and 20-inch, five split-spoke wheels with gloss black finish. Known as ‘Style 5039’, these wheels are not available on any other model in the range. Complementing these perfectly is the choice of three metallic paints: Santorini Black, Eiger Grey or Firenze Red. The driver-focused ‘1+1’ cabin surrounds the occupants with rich, luxurious materials. The slimline Performance Climate Seats feature 12- way adjustment and are trimmed in Windsor leather with a choice of Ebony with Light Oyster contrast stitching or – for a more sporting theme – Mars with Flame Red stitch. Details such as the beautifully crafted monogram stitch pattern, repeated in the door trim, are among the subtle refinements which make F-TYPE feel special. The interior, like the exterior, has evolved into a purer expression of the car’s elegance and performance. By concentrating on further refining the traditionally British Jaguar craftsmanship and adding discreet, beautiful details, the sense of luxury and sportiness has been heightened. Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro Okay, so this isn’t one that you’ll be parking outside the office, you won’t even be driving it on roads as it’s track only – but we couldn’t resist including it. Billed as “the ultimate no rules hypercar”, the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro is definitely something special. In the pursuit of the lightest weight and fastest lap times, the Valkyrie AMR Pro relies solely on a modified version of the sensational Cosworth-built 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V12 engine. Revving to 11,000rpm, this masterpiece of internal combustion is on-target to develop 1000bhp. Weight savings will come from deletion of the battery-electric hybrid system, plus a host of other weight saving measures, including ultra-lightweight carbon fibre bodywork, carbon suspension wishbones and Perspex windscreen and side windows. Together with an aerodynamic efficiency that exceeds Le Mans Hypercar regulations, the Valkyrie AMR Pro promises track performance approaching that of a Formula One car. More details of the Valkyrie AMR Pro’s specification and performance will be released later this year, but with a target lap time around the 8.5-mile 24H Le Mans circuit of 3 minutes 20 seconds – blistering performance that would see the Valkyrie AMR Pro battling with the front running LMP1 cars for the outright win in the world’s greatest endurance race. While one might give some aspects of dog grooming a go at home, for the best results, it is usually preferred to book in with a professional to pamper your pooch - after all dog grooming is not just bathing your pup. Not only does this save time and energy for the owner, but takes away the stress of awkward and difficult tasks such as clipping claws to a comfortable length so they do not become painful, alongside fighting mats, and avoids odd haircuts. Let’s face it, we don’t all have the patience to groom our dogs, or really want to be dealing with things like glands, especially if a dog is skittish or extremely fluffy, seeing the vacuum groan. An appointment with a professional sees that every aspect of grooming is covered - brushing, bathing, drying, trimming/shaving, clipping, etcetera - and that sanitised, and the correct equipment is being used. After all, different coats require different brushes. In addition, tasks you may not be quick to remember need doing are all taken care of, including checking anal glands and ear cleaning, which also makes groomers a good line of defence against ear infections, especially if your friend has floppy ears, which they will be able to check for. Groomers can also look out for skin irritations and lumps while handling the pup and are unlikely to make the same mistakes as owners - for example overlooking ringworms, ticks and other parasites when brushing. Plus pros simply know what they are doing, understanding how to groom the right cut for your canine and make them comfortable. How regularly a dog will need to be groomed depends on a variety of factors, such as breed, coat type, if they have oily skin, how often they are outside, and the kind of grooming you choose. Where a golden retriever might need to see a groomer monthly, other breeds demand less visits. If you are not sure where to find a groomer, consider asking family, friends and neighbours, your vet, or looking for recommendations on the web. Additionally, you may wish to specifically seek out a groomer who is experienced in grooming the breed of dog you have or is used to dealing with dogs that hold a similar personality, for instance if they are usually fearful. When booking your appointment it is also wise to ask some questions about training, pricing, products, and tools used, and when you do drop off your dog, ensure to detail any concerns. No matter what, though, you will still want to do some extra grooming at home in between appointments. Routine cleaning around the eyes, frequent brushing, regular baths, teeth cleaning, claw cutting, and ear cleaning are all vital regardless of breed and will therefore need to be taken care of. Let’s take a quick look at some of these tasks more closely. Eye cleaning Cotton balls, washcloths and sponges moist with room- temperature water can be used to clean eye discharge. Gently wipe around the eye to remove dirt and tear stains. Groomed to perfection All dogs need to be groomed well to ensure they remain clean and healthy. It’s time to pamper that pooch! 60 Á 58-61.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 59 PETS CORNER © Shutterstock /lev .studio 58-61.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:56 Page 2Next >
