< Previous60 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY PETS CORNER Brushing A dog’s coat should be brushed several times a week, with the frequency determined by coat type, to remove dead hair, skin, dirt and prevent tangles and mats which may see your pup’s skin become sore. Brushing also spreads oils across the coat, boosting shine. The equipment required for this will vary depending on coat length and texture; if your pooch’s hair is long, opt for pin brushes and metal combs, if it is short, seek out bristle brushes, or if mats need to be removed, there are special brushes for this. Introduce a dog slowly to brushing, treating them along the way, and brush in the natural direction of the fur. Bath time Ensure to give your dog baths in warm water (once its coat is free of mats) for a more pleasant experience, praising and treating them. Thoroughly wet the dog and massage in a suitable shampoo, following instructions on the label, then rinse thoroughly and dry with a towel, finishing with a blow dry if required. Some canines will need this more regularly than others; while one dog may want a bath simply because it is dirty, others have skin conditions that necessitate extra baths. Too frequent washing with shampoos can actually cause skin problems, so weigh out what your dog needs. © Shutterstock /Africa Studio © Shutterstock /135pixels 58-61.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:56 Page 3Ear cleaning Use a damp cloth or cotton wool to clean around the entrance of the ear. You will likely want to utilise a dog specific ear cleaning product for the ear canal (do not insert it too deeply), following the instructions. Look and smell each ear too, to check for signs of swelling, redness, or discharge. Claw cutting Make sure to check claws often as nails should be cut, depending on growth, every three to six weeks with sharp nail clippers suitable for your dog’s size. But only do this yourself if you are confident, and keep a doggy first aid kit in case you accidentally cut the quick. A key sign nails need to be cut is hearing them click on the floor. Teeth cleaning Use a special soft toothbrush and toothpaste made for dogs. If your dog is not keen on the experience, get them comfortable with it by rubbing the teeth with a finger, and letting them smell and lick the toothpaste and brush. When grooming your dog, ensure to do so in a room/on a surface where your dog will not slip around, which will not add to their stress, and reward them. LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY 61 PETS CORNER Keeping puppy calm Have you got a new puppy in lockdown? Are you worried about socialising with other dogs and people? Are they reactive around other dogs and people? Lady Pea’s Dogs provides some advice to dog owners. Our job as a puppy guardian is to support their learning in a way that is acceptable with society and to make them feel calm and confident in their day-to-day surroundings. Having an understanding of what our puppy’s needs and feelings are, will allow them to cope better in difficult situations. We need to be aware that socialisation isn’t about learning off other puppies, that would be like toddlers teaching toddlers at nursery with no adult supervision. Effectively reading the language dogs use to communicate will allow us to confidently predict potential signs of danger. An anxious dog is more likely to bite than a happy dog. There is a big difference between a dog that is tolerating interactions and a dog that is actively engaging in that interaction. Here are a few top tips for raising a well-socialised puppy: • Allow your puppy to choose whether to approach a person, dog, animal or item. • If your puppy gets overly excited call them back to you so they can take some distance and calm down. • Go to the park and just sit together on a bench watching the world go by. • Have realistic expectations. • Protect your puppy from fast in-coming people or dogs. Although it was a short drive from my own home, it truly felt as though I was going on holiday. The site has been in Steve Plumb’s farming family since 1931 and, in 2016, he joined forces with construction specialist John Blades. The aim was to create a family-friendly, conservation-led place for the public to stay, dine, fish and enjoy. It was obvious from our first few minutes on-site that the duo had accomplished this and more. Their enthusiasm was clearly shared by the staff, all of whom were welcoming, friendly and possessed a sense of pride at working there. The Park’s official 2020 opening was, understandably, hit by the coronavirus outbreak, but this hasn’t deterred the staff or the owners. As well as stunning wildflower meadows to mosey around, there’s a lovely park area for the kids to play in. For fishing enthusiasts there are four lakes open from dawn to dusk filled with barbel, mirror carp and perch (to name but a few). Moreover, there’s two ornamental lakes home to ducks, geese and a family of swans. On arrival, the reception team explained the park layout, directed us to our Leisure Lodge and asked us if there was anything we needed. If the mark of any leisure destination is in its staff, I knew right then and there that we were in for a treat. There’s plenty of camping grounds and EHU pitches to set up a tent, but for those looking for something more luxurious, the Park has some truly stunning glamping pods. For my partner and I, it was all about the lodge. Our lodge was like new, spotlessly clean, spacious and quite overwhelming. The décor was light and bright, the bed linen was fresh, the towels were large and soft. The fully equipped kitchen had literally everything you’d need for a break away: microwave, oven, large fridge freezer… the list goes on. Each lodge comes with a welcome pack consisting of tea, coffee and trimmings, plus a very cute little bottle of washing up liquid. This is the kind of personal touch that you just don’t get in many of the bigger, brand-name holiday parks. Of course, I need to point out that everything was brand-new and sealed with all COVID security protocols being adhered to. As soon as we were settled in, my partner and I went for a stroll around the park where we watched the resident barn owl hunting for his supper. We settled on the seated veranda that came with our lodge and overlooked the canal lake. There we blissfully sat and enjoyed a few chilled glasses of Pinot grigio and listened to the evening wildlife. After a lovely night’s sleep, we walked over to the Brewers café-bar to sample their full English breakfasts. With every bite, you could taste the quality of the local produce used – the sausage and bacon, in particular. In short, it has to be one of the best breakfasts I have had in a very long time. Catering to guests and day clients alike, the café-bar also offers light snacks and a great selection of drinks with seating inside and out. Plus, it’s dog-friendly, which is always a bonus in my book. After a full day comprised on local tourism (and a lovely little nanna nap) we called back into the Brewers to enjoy the peaceful surroundings over a glass of wine. It was sheer heaven to chat with the other guests. Everyone we spoke to was having a similarly delightful time, with all saying they’d be back again. As the Park only opened last year, there’s lots more coming as the owners move forward giving us plenty to look forward to. Sometimes we are all guilty of feeling we have to travel distances to go away for a weekend break, having visited the park I can honestly say you don’t. We are lucky here in Lincolnshire to have wonderful attractions and places to stay and we have just discovered a brand new one. We have already pre-booked and cannot wait to return to Hanworth Country Park. 62-63.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 08:59 Page 264 LINCOLNSHIRE TODAY onwhat’s Boston Last Thursday of the Month Boston Craft and Gift Market, Market Place The Boston Craft and Gift Market has made its triumphant return for 2021. The crafty duo have already hosted courses in bookbinding, crochet, felt art and print making and have more courses in the pipeline. In August, they have an art taster session and also a course on making a leather wrap around book. In September, you can spend the day weaving willow to create a garden obelisk and a trivet for the kitchen. “As we come out of the pandemic it is crucial that people feel safe around others” says David. “That’s why we have restricted numbers to 6 on each course and we make sure everybody is kept as safe as they can be.” In addition, their large training room is kept fully ventilated, and the high ceilings provide plenty of air circulation. They have even made a promise that if they must cancel a course due to COVID or somebody can’t make a course because they are asked to isolate, they will receive a full refund. “It’s important that people know they can book ahead with confidence,” said Zoe. “We promise that, even if numbers are small, we will do everything we can to ensure every course runs.” Old School Crafts is in an idyllic setting and when you are there the peaceful atmosphere does wonders for your wellbeing, so why not go to their website and treat yourself, and maybe a friend, to one of their wonderful courses; you certainly won’t regret it. Many cultures are much more open than we are about death, and perhaps this is something we could take from them. For something that everyone will experience in one way or another in our lives, it may seem surprising that so much is kept quiet about it. In today’s modern world, with people being more connected than ever, perhaps it’s time to lift the lid on death and speak our minds. Whether it comes unexpected or not, those left behind will be experiencing their own grief at the loss of a loved one, and the last thing a person wants to leave their family with is funeral planning, finance and difficulty – right when they are struggling to contain their grief. When emotions are high and questions are being asked, it can be difficult for loved ones to band together to arrange a funeral, and it might leave them with a hurried send-off they come to regret in the future. There are many reasons to plan ahead and arrange your funeral in advance, not least of all the ability to take the hassle out of your loved one’s hands. For those who have final wishes, pre- planning can go a long way to making sure those are followed. Dying matters is a week that takes place each year in May, and last year research found that less than 29% of people have discussed their wishes around dying, while 82% of younger family members suggested they would be open to discussing their loved one’s final wishes with them. This is a huge discrepancy and shows how the younger generation are willing to listen, but do not often get the opportunity. In the same research, 70% of people said they wished to die at home, yet 60% of people currently die in hospitals – often because these wishes are never shared. It also seems that wishes have changed over recent years, with many funerals turning away from the traditional black clothing and quiet grief that has dominated our society for so long. People now are pushing for celebrations of life rather than grieving over death, with videos and slideshows of the deceased enjoying their life, and maybe even a last, touching video played by the individual as a final farewell to their loved ones. Such moments can mean so much more than black clothes, flowers and a quiet grave, and it’s worth thinking of just what you might want your final moments and memories to be. It’s not just funerals and plans that ought to be considered, however, as surveys also show that two thirds of people do not have a will in place. No matter the age of a person, a will is an inexpensive and at times necessary thing which can mean the world of difference should a life come to an end. Many people who do not pre-plan their own funerals leave their family in disaster because they assume the inheritance will more than cover it – only for those that are left behind to find difficulties in will readings or legal affairs that delay the dispersion of funds until long after the funeral. All of this distress can be easily Affairs in order Though no one likes to talk about death, it is better than leaving our loved ones in the dark when the time eventually comes. 70 Á Affairs in order Though no one likes to talk about death, it is better than leaving our loved ones in the dark when the time eventually comes. 69-71.qxp_Layout 1 23/07/2021 09:04 Page 1Next >
