< Previous30 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYHOTEL REVIEWWith a tree-lined approachthat adds a sense ofoccasion to your journeyto the castle itself, you feel as if youare entering a different world longbefore the castle reveals itself.Eventually entering through a guardhouse, complete with port-cullis thesplendour of the castle hits you andit’s a breath-taking sight.Completed by John Tollemachewithin 36,000 acres of land it wasoriginally designed to be a fortifiedfamily home. Through the years it hasbeen home to several families, a refugefor children during the war and manyother uses besides. The buildingbecame a popular wedding venue inthe nineties and a hotel in 2001.With high ceilings and vauntedwindows, the castle is by no means ina ‘mock’ style, its corridors are endlessand staircases trail up, down andaround the stone walls and turrets. The rooms are the height of class, witha refined, yet modern style. Our room came with a beautifully-presented four-poster bed and the softfurnishings spoke relaxation in theextreme. With a bathroomlarger than most hotels think tooffer, a roll-top bath and rain-style shower meant our longjourney there was soon washedaway.Having met friends elsewherefor a meal, we were still offered a mealon arrival, a touch that impressed usas it was rather late. It seems we havemissed out, the hotel’s restaurant,1851, has a sumptuous and deliciousmenu that could easily rival Michelin-starred establishments. With anenviable wine list too, we were cursingnot being able to sample thegastronomic delights on offer.Breakfast however was incredible, fresh coffee and a delightful cookedoffering with obviously localingredients set us up for the day. Withthe strength of this, we’d definitely beback for an evening meal on anothervisit. The castle also provides the magicalbackdrop for weddings year-round.With the venue set in such wonderfulsurroundings and with the history ofthe place standing out, it will be avenue that will no doubt live in themind forever. As the castle has its own falconry, options are open to couples to have aunique guest at their wedding, aGolden Eagle. As well as this grandoption, doves released after theceremony are also available. It seems abespoke wedding is somethingPeckforton does with style. The castle itself isn’t the onlyattraction in the area, the towns andvillages of rural Cheshire are just ashort drive away. Chester itself isnearby, full of history and things todo, including a racecourse andfabulous shopping. Trentham Gardensjust south of Stoke are also a treat forthose who love the great outdoors andTatton Park, a rolling country estate(the UK’s most complete) is down theroad near Knutsford. To book a room at Peckforton Castle, call 01829 260930 or log on to www.peckfortoncastle.co.ukRelaxingrampartsPeckforton Castle, resplendent on top of a hill in Cheshire, isperhaps the most regal place you could hope to stay at.
