We also extend that into the much broader local community, throughfinancial support of local causes and charities. Environment -Our actions extend to: conservation of energy and naturalresources, minimisation of waste and ensuring our trading partners do likewise.May I just state, for the record, that I have absolutely no issues withpeople who want to do drugs. After all, if they want to ruin their livesby shovelling coke up their nose or smoking strange concoctionsbefore going out, so be it. But, when they ask me to stand and watchthem doing it, or worse still wait in a queue at my local chemists whilethey’re served it - that’s crossing the line.I am of course referring to a rather extended wait while trying to geta prescription filled. Where I and two ‘nice young men’ waited patientlyto be served. After what seemed like an age the young men werehanded a bottle each, which they then stood at the counter guzzling the contents!Methadone, I was told by the chap behind me who rolled his eyes in disapproval.Surely there’s a better way – maybe two lines at the local chemist for starters? Onefor civilised human beings and one for the rest would be a good start!Anyway, despite this episode – which, as you can tell, still haunts me - there arereasons for the rest of us to be cheerful; parts one, two and three! Part one - With months of glorious sunshine behind us, this summer seems tohave gone on and on, and so to realise that we have yet another month puts asmile on my face. Part two - The economy is definitely picking up. We’ve seen the latest figuresshowing that here in Lincolnshire we’re now more optimistic about the pound inour pocket than at any time since Labour handed over power to the coalition, property prices are on the rise and manufacturing is improving.Part three - Combine the above, and what more excuse do you need to go outand enjoy the arts and culture that Lincolnshire offers? Because we have such a hugecounty on our doorstep, the diverse nature of the culture on offer is astounding. From north to south, east to west – no two parts of Lincolnshire are the same, andthis resonates throughout this issue. We’ve combed the county for interesting ways toenjoy any spare time you might have in September and we’re sure you’re going tolove our latest offerings. Ilike to explain how people are and theirfeelings, but a lot of books go on and onand on. I like to get to the point, it keepsthe story moving. I don’t read as manybooks as I used to but I know what I likeand don’t like. What inspires you to write?I’ve never been like that. I startedpainting to begin with, then went on toshort stories and poetry. There’s poetry inmy books and one or two have beenprinted in newspapers too.Does Lincolnshire inspire you?I’m from Yorkshire and I love the place, but I was based in Scampton andWaddington during the war so I’ve seena lot of the county.Does your plot take place within thecounty or an imagined version? It is imagined, but what I tried to do isthat think of something that’s differentfor a murder story. I wanted to find outwhat would happen if someone had a100% alibi or supposedly a perfectexcuse. I won’t say too much thoughbecause it would spoil the plot.Is there anyone that inspires you? What do you like reading?Nobody in particular, if it’s interestingI’ll read it. If it’s four inches thick andwaffles on I’m not interested. People whohave read my book say they always wantto turn the page but if you go over thetop it can get too much. My last bookwas six thousand words. You are involved in the SkegnessWriters Group, does that help youalong? It’s closed down now, but I initiallystarted on an Open University course. Ihad to write short stories and an expertmarked them. I wrote a lot of storiesfrom my own life and that was good, butthen I sent a fictional one and I got aletter back giving me a rollickling, so Ididn’t enjoy that! But I did learned a lotfrom what he said. Then I joined thewriters group and we had around adozen members including local writerMargaret Dickinson, who told me howdifficult it was to write and get published.Denning Howard ran it and he was theonly member who would be honest andrip you to bits, he was right. It was howwe learned, no patting you on the back.Blind Stab is out now via AustinMacauley.A stab inthe darkErnest Barrett is a Yorkshire-born writer who has lived inLincolnshire for most of his life.
