For a workingmum, to two boys, who was working at her localpreschool as Deputy Manager when she enrolled onthe Foundation Degree in Children’s Services courseat BGU is an inspiration to us all and her graduationspeaks volumes. Perhaps, the popular press should take note andstop barracking David Cameron for his policies oncutting benefits for stay at home mums. After all, it’stheir choice isn’t it? J GarforthLincolnIn the chairDear Lincolnshire Today,Congratulations to Shannon Eaglestone who has been elected as the first female Chairof the Lincolnshire Young Farmers’ Club in twelve years. It’s about time women were given a chance to show what we can do and it’s great tosee the YFC moving with the times and ensuring women are regularly given the chanceto rise to the position of chair. I hope that doesn’t make me sound like a Suffragette orsomething but, lets be honest, how often does it happen?Well done, Shannon!A BoundsScotterthorpePICK OF THE MONTHThe winner of our letter of the month wins a case of wine. We’d love to hear from you: Lincolnshire Today, Armstrong House, Armstrong Street,Grimsby, N E Lincs DN31 2QE. Email: lincs-today@blmgroup.co.uk We reserve theright to edit published lettersDig deepDear Lincolnshire Today,I would urge everyone to support the AllyCadence Trust, which itself supports babies andtheir families after the diagnosis of Spinal MuscularAtrophy (SMA) Type 1. The genetic disordermostly affects babies and toddlers and is usuallyfatal, with a life expectancy of up to two years. The charity was founded in 2009 by Emma andKarl Humphries after they lost their baby daughterAlly Cadence to SMA Type 1, at just six monthsold. In 2013 the Ally Cadence Trust has gone fromstrength to strength, as Emma and Karl havetravelled across the UK to provide affected familieswith support, guidance and vital equipment. Sofar this year the charity has helped eight families, twice last year’s total, and more are on the waitinglist. Because of the high demand, however, itsfunding is now running low and the couple areworried about finding more money at such a busytime. Please give generously to this fantasticcharity so that they can continue their work.W WillsSleafordAny old iron? Dear Lincolnshire Today,Having just had my farm robbed, for thefirst time in twenty years, I thought I’d write andforewarn others (not just farmers but alsosmallholders) to keep an eye out. Apparently,Lincolnshire is the third worst county in the UK for such crimeswhich doesn’t make me feel one bit better but I certainly wish I’d known this before. Agricultural machinery is the main target by thieves although in my case we also losttools and our heating.Criminals may feel it’s a victimless crime as insurance companies should reimburse theloss, but we’ve now been told we have to install extra security on top of what we alreadyhave - plus of course there’s that feeling of our space and privacy being invaded. I would urge your readers to watch out for people who drive down their lanes claimingto be looking for a neighbouring farm, then there’s those people who claim to beenquiring about land to rent, as well as those supposedly looking for scrap metal.A friend of ours has suggested we keep geese to alert us when trespassers come on tothe farm and of course retractable cattle grids are another useful tool in the artillery tomake farms less vulnerable. Apparently there was something in the order of £1.8 million in losses from farms inLincolnshire last year – who says crime doesn’t pay? Manager Ian explains, “When webought the hotel around eight years ago, itwas rather regal and grand, which was finebut we wanted to make it more welcoming. We opened up the ground floor to a large, open plan room and brought in the city’sfirst cocktail bar and that’s been great for us. “This refurbishment of the rooms then, is anatural step. We’ve used a London-baseddesigner, Gabriel Murray who owns Studio48which has transformed bars in places likeCanary Wharf and there’s a distinctive stylethat matches the décor of our ground floorcarried on into the bedrooms.“Feedback on the new rooms has beengreat so far and I think we’ve retained thatsense of the contemporary with an air ofsophistication. Our clientele tend to be a bityounger now and they demand somethinga bit more up to date than we had.”The hotel’s clientele is not easily pinneddown however. A mix of corporate andleisure guests means people are not onlylooking for functionality, but value too andwith competitive prices for the city, thehotel’s offering has just improved many fold.“We’ve used local contractors for thework where possible, the builders, electricians and even the window firms havebeen local, but for that extra push forexclusivity the furniture is continental.”As we step around the new rooms, thefurniture in the existing rooms is alsoechoed in the refurbished rooms. Chests ofdrawers and bedside cabinets have beenreconditioned from a mahogany look to asleek, black matt finish that looks charmingAll change atthe White HartOne of Lincoln’s most historic hotels is currently undergoing someamazing changes to its accommodation. We meet with manager IanRobinson to get the inside scoop on the new breath-taking rooms on offer.12 LINCOLNSHIRETODAY012-013:Layout 1 9/8/13 11:56 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY13WHITE HARTTo sample one of the White Hart’s new rooms, call 01522 526222to book a table or log on to www.whitehart-lincoln.co.ukand sophisticated and reflect the subtle lighting and cool, crisp new features well. The balance between modernityand history is a conscious one, of course - with Cathedralviews from a majority of rooms, the White Hart remains theplace to soak in Lincoln’s heritage. With views across theBail and the red roofs surrounding the area, includingMinster Yard, you get a sense of history and heritage beingclose while feeling you are in a city hotel too.The hotel is a great base for anyone wanting toexperience the city of Lincoln and all it has to offer. As wellas being a stone’s throw away from the Cathedral andcastle, the White Hart also has one of the most temptingrestaurants we’ve sampled in the city. The Grille offers somemouth-watering options for diners of all tastes but at anaffordable price. This, coupled with a simple but incrediblyinnovative approach to food, means it’s an ideal place tounwind and relax. If you’re staying at the hotel, we’drecommend soaking up the atmosphere in the open spaceof the cocktail bar on arrival before sitting down to adelicious meal.012-013:Layout 1 9/8/13 11:56 Page 2PHOTOS BY RICHARD PICKSLEYSally Crawford of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire AirAmbulance with James Pinchbeck of StreetsJon O’Malley, Mark Franklin,Nigel Gray and John Kidwestof Newton & FallowellErica Manderfield, Kelly Goodchild,Katie De Neise and Nikki Gray of StreetsMartin and Robert Spenceley,Keith Smith and Paddy Pliace ofDuncan & ToplisMalcolm Howsle and Jon Gibbisonfrom Hereward HomesAngela Driffil, Lynda Russell, WendyDenniss and Helen McCall ofCallaway IT SolutionsGeoff Taylor, Bob Marsh, Steve Shephardand Chris Mayo from StreetsThe winning team from RBS14 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYSOCIAL SCENEStreets golf dayraises money ‘fore’a good causeStreets’ Annual CharityGolf Day raised over fivethousand pounds forcharity. The hugely popular eventby Streets CharteredAccountants was held atLincoln Golf Club, andcompetitors were able toenjoy the day and helpmake a difference to thework of the three local AirAmbulance charities -Yorkshire Air Ambulance,Lincolnshire &Nottinghamshire AirAmbulance and East AnglianAir Ambulance. All proceeds from the daywent to support thesecharities and localbusinesses helped in variousways by playing on the day, sponsoring and donating aprize for the raffle. The first prize on the daywent to the team from RBS,consisting of Chris Mason,Mick Manterfield and IanMillington.
