Clearly BMW isn’t about to allow newcontenders, such as the Jaguar XE, takeany of its market share and the new 3Series, which is now on sale, ticks all theboxes with a more agile and more refinedmodel than we’ve ever seen in its class. The Bavarian manufacturer says its aimis to make their mainstream executivesaloons even more agile and involving todrive. They’ve improved refinementlevels and lowered CO2 emissions tomake it a more appealing company carchoice than ever, and refreshed thedesign with new headlights, grille andmore stylish front and rear bumpers.Essentially it’s still got the 3 series lookabout it but these changes, for me, justgive it more kerb appeal, thanks to alower and wider stance. The improved agility comes from thesuspension settings which have beentransformed to provide a more dynamicdriving experience. As can be seen from our images, thecar on loan to us was the touring model -a diesel too - but for the life of me, thatwas hard to tell from the extremely briskperformance and I was even moresurprised to discover it was only a twolitre diesel, as it offers such excellentthrottle response and easy overtaking onLincolnshire’s A and B roads. Bodycontrol is superb and the power is alwaysthere when you need it.From the cockpit, the driver feels trulyspoilt, virtually no wind or road noise andso comfortable, I could’ve been riding onair. Attention to detail has been furtherenhanced inside, with new chromeflourishes running along the centre of thefascia and extending to the door panels –ours even had ambient lighting runningalong the door panels which adds a realtouch of class and everything you see,and touch, seems to have received thefull BMW upgrade treatment - from thecup holders and its sliding cover, to thebezels around the air vents, this is a carthat radiates opulence.
