< Previous70 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCARINGOn sweltering summer days, likethose our region has experienced thisyear, it is vital to check on elderlyfamily, friends and neighbours, tohelp them beat the heat. While we often talk about helping the elderly staywarm, safe and healthy in the winter, perhaps due to thesignificant amount of press the issue receives each year, people tend to forget the strong negative effects that theheat of summer has. In an intense heatwave like the oneLincolnshire witnessed over the past couple of months, that the MET Office triggered an Amber Alert for, it isimportant to know how to help your elderly relatives andneighbours deal with the heat.As we get older, our body’s systems become lessefficient and do not regulate temperature well, creating ahigher risk of heatstroke, heat cramps and heat rashamongst other dangerous and potentially life-threateningconditions. Olderpeople with dementia and Alzheimer’s are also muchmore at risk for health problems resulting from aheatwave as they may not realise that they areoverheating, and thus might mistakenly dress in heavyclothing or leave the heating on. It is thus vital thatcarers, homes and care homes are prepared for aheatwave. If you are helping care for an elderly relative, it isimportant to make sure any medications they take arekept at a temperature below 25°C, and to understandwhether any medication they are on affects sweating andtemperature control as these will enhance the effects of72 Á© Shutterstock/Robert KneschkeCliff Bradley & SonsFuneral Directors LtdFor a prompt, sympatheticservice from a recognisedfamily businessPrivate Chapel of RestDay and Night ServicePre-paid funeral plans41 Heaton Street,Gainsborough, DN21 2EA(01427) 810619www.cliffbradley.co.ukCARINGLookingfor a greatgift idea? www 1st 3 issues only£1Lincolnshire Today’s gift subscription for only£27.55 with free deliveryCall 01472 310301or visit www.lincolnshiretoday.net/34170-73.qxp_Layout 1 14/08/2018 11:56 Page 2overheating. In stiflingly hot weatherit is also important to keep an eyeout for heat exhaustion and to knowthe warning signs for heatstroke, which is particularly dangerous andcan be fatal, as overheating affectsthe elderly quickly. Flushed skin, fastbreathing, vomiting, changes inbehaviour like confusion andirritability, and even seizures are allsymptoms, that if seen one should goto hospital for. There are a number of basic thingsthat can be done within the house, orwithin a care home bedroom, that cankeep older people cool. Firstly, shutthe windows when it is hotter outsidethan inside, and make sure the blindsare down, then open widows when itis cooler for some ventilation. Avoidusing metallic blinds and darkcurtains, however, as they make roomshotter - consider using light colouredcurtains instead. You can also usereflective material on the outside ofwindows to keep a room cool, but whilethis is effective at cooling down a space,it may make a room feel closed in, whenhomes should remain a comfortingenvironment.Regular cold baths and showers areanother great way to beat the heat athome, but as not all older individuals aremobile enough to climb into the tubwhenever they get too warm, or havepeople around at all times to help, this isnot always a possibility. Keeping a waterspray bottle to hand can be useful as aquick and temporary way to cool off asan alternative when both inside andoutside. Another trick is to keep bowls ofwater and indoor plants in the home asevaporation helps cool air.As elderly people are at a higher riskof dehydration, it is also important tomake sure they drink plenty of coldfluids, approximately two litres a day, andthat if they are in a care home, they areoffered plenty of drinks. Of course, thisdoesn’t just have to be water. Greatalternatives, that will likely be happilyreceived, are diluted fruit juice or ice tea. Most chilled drinks are suitable, but it is72 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYCARINGadvised to avoid lots of caffeinatedbeverages. The NHS state that elderly individualswho are most vulnerable to heat shouldstay out of the sun between 11am and3pm, as this is the hottest part of theday. As this is not always possible, andolder people like to get out and about tosocialise as much anyone else, make surecool and loose lightweight cottonclothing is worn, along with a hat, suncream and sunglasses with a UV400label, CE mark, or say they have 100%UV protection. With the rising temperature, MPs haveurged inspectors to assess care homeson heatwave resilience after reflecting ona past heatwave in 2003 that increasedthe number of heat-related deaths incare homes by 42%. This news comesalongside the Care Quality Commission’slaunch of the new #TempAwarecampaign to raise awareness on hownursing homes can keep the elderly safeand cool. With summer temperaturesexpected to gradually increase to reach38.5 degrees Celsius by the 2040s, thereare more factors to now consider if youor an elderly relative are looking into anursing home to give them the best care.Consider whether the care home isequipped to cater for sudden surges intemperature: check if it has atemperature control system, airconditioning or plenty of fans in bothcommunal areas and bedrooms, or haswater sprays to hand – all quick and keymethods of cooling down. Anotherfeature to look out for is a ‘cool room’.The Care Provider Alliance says that allcare homes should have one designatedroom, a ‘cool room’, that maintains atemperature below 26 degrees Celsiuswhen there is sweltering heat. Theserooms are particularly important forelderly citizens who are unable to, or areon medications that reduce their abilityto, cool themselves properly. As manyolder folks enjoy sitting in the outdoorspaces at care homes, to enjoy natureand fresh air, check for the amount ofshade provided outside for residents.Consider whether they have a goodamount of tree cover or shaded seatingareas with garden parasols for instance. If an older relative lives and is oftenalone, it could be useful to get an elderly© Shutterstock/fototip70-73.qxp_Layout 1 14/08/2018 11:56 Page 3person alarm installed, so that if youare away, for example on a summerholiday, you know they can sound theiralarm to get the help they need.Another useful device that can beinstalled to put the mind at easeduring warm weather is a smartthermostatic device. Smart thermostatscan be activated remotely and byvoice, allowing an elderly friend toadjust a room’s temperature from theirseat and without them having to worryabout straining themselves getting up.Smart thermostats can even changeautomatically with the outsidetemperature, which is particularlyuseful for older friends who may beforgetful. No matter where your olderrelative or friend lives, make sure tohelp them keep cool, happy andhealthy in the heat. The Law HousesolicitorsUncommon Wisdom. Then you get closer and realise it’ssmaller than its brother. The cars look similar, and that’s a good thing because they’re bothhandsome. The outgoing V60’s boot has beensuperseded by a load area that’s the biggestin its segment. Open the tailgate, and 539litres of cargo capacity greets you. Behind the wheel, the new V60 is planted and comfy. We werehanded the keys to the 190PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 model. Thediesel engine pulls like a train with zero to 62mph arriving in 7.9seconds. Top speed is 137mph. It’s an efficient unit too, returning aclaimed average of 61.4mpg.The new estate car’s ride is excellent, primarily due to the flexiblesuspension system, and the steering weights up well from 40mph.These two things alone make the 2018 model V60 a delight to drive. Itskerbside appeal is boosted even further, thanks to its 15mm loweredride height, silver door mirrors, gloss black grille and 18-inch alloys. The jazziness continues inside, with leather andnubuck sports seats. There are also metal-effect inlays, sports pedals, and illuminated tread plates. Our test car was fitted with the D4 engine, hookedup to an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The D4 is a2.0-litre turbo diesel unit delivering 190PS - a well-judged output for regular commuting. It’s quickenough for most palates, reaching 62mph in 8.5seconds, but it is prudent, too. On the regular V90s, you’re offered a morecushioned ride.
