My dining partner went for ahomemade parsnip pancake filled withbrie, which was drizzled with honeyand a hot, whole grain mustarddressing. For our main course we couldn’twait to tuck into our Splashhomemade rich beef lasagne withchips and salad and a rather indulgent8oz sirloin steak served with a grilledtomato, onion rings, mushrooms, chips and salad. The lasagne was richand creamy, the cheese topping thedish being particularly flavoursome. The steak we found, was cooked toperfection, the juices complimentingsome fresh leaves and some hot, crispychips. So many places make theirchips with so little care these days, it’srefreshing to come across a place thattakes pride in the humble potato. Thechip, particularly in its very Britishthick-cut style is an institution that weshould be proud of. At The Splash, they know their chips, as it were. After this we decided to push theboat out and order some treats in theform of the Splash’s excellent desserts. We opted for a sweet and stickyBanoffee pie with vanilla ice creamwhich proved to be one of the bestwe’ve ever had, not sickly, notoverwhelming, it used the naturalsweetness of the banana to subtlyinfluence the feel of the dish. Mydining partner had plumped for awarm chocolate brownie, drowned inchocolate ice cream and a richchocolate sauce. For the chocoholic, this was simply perfection. The Royal Oak is a very cosytraditional country pub with awelcoming open log fire burning forwhen the typical British summertimefails to deliver. The Splash offers two restaurantswith beamed ceilings and aconservatory with exposed roof beamscomplete with a corner bar, offeringSunday carvery lunches and the abilityto cater for a wide range of functions,it’s a place to hold inhigh regard. We thoughtwe’d pay another visit to remind ourselveshow good it is.With a modern and welcoming feel to therestaurant, The Haven is the perfect place toindulge. With courteous and attentive staffwe were seated almost straight away andstarted to look over the mouth-wateringmenu on offer.Being brought a still-warm loaf of breadinfused with rosemary and olives, we choseour starters carefully, but in all honesty wecould have gone for all of them. Weeventually plumped for a chicken, asparagus, chorizo and parma-ham wrappedterrine, served with a sweet and tangyapricot relish which made the perfectly-cooked terrine come alive. My diningpartner went for sea bass on a crisp toastwith dressed salad, the fish was both crispyand tender once in the mouth. Both disheswere presented beautifully and we remarkedhow satisfying the portion sizes were, just ahint of what was to come with the maincourse. For our main dishes, we chose the twice-cooked pork belly, stuffed in the middlewith Lincolnshire sausage meat and apricot, ladled with butternut squash puree and witha portion of crisp and fluffy roast potatoes. This is the way pork belly should be, free ofextraneous fat and with enough crackling tokeep even the most fussy pork aficionadohappy. The butternut squash provided asweet, but hearty accompaniment that bothof us could probably eat another portion ofeasily. My dining partner went for a chickensupreme, served on a bed of blue cheeserisotto and a sharp but flavoursome tomatosauce. The blue cheese was far from howyou would expect, rather than being heavyon taste, served with the tomato, it took ona subtle taste that complimented thegenerous chicken portion.Full, but with a desire to further indulge,we took a look at the dessert menu anddecided on a milk chocolate tart withcinnamon ice cream and a raspberrypannacotta with fresh berries and a matchingsorbet. The ice cream served with thechocolate tart was a new flavour to us, butworked incredibly well, it’s spicy andwarming tone after the initial cold kick wentperfectly with the gooey and delicious tart. The pannacotta was creamy and indulgent, coupled with a raspberry sorbet it was apalate-cleansing end to the meal.A special mention must goto the espresso servedfollowing the meal. Smokyand strong, it certainly put thecap on what was a certainlymemorable meal.Deliciously Deliciously LincolnshirePlatinumAwarded for outstanding quality and service byLincolnshireTodayawardWWW.LINCOLNSHIRETODAY.NETLINCOLNSHIRETODAY33FOOD & DININGThe Haven is located at Bicker Bar, Bicker, Boston, PE20 3AN. With afantastic selection of real ales and agreat choice of world wines on offer,we at Lincolnshire Today could notwait to sample the fabulous new menuand all it had to offer. To start I had the fresh pea andgarden mint soup with sour cream andhomemade bread, this was a fabulousstart to the meal, the soup had a fresh, light taste and the bread was sodelicious. My companion opted forthe fresh tomato and cheese salad, thehomemade sweet pepper garnish madethis particular dish stand out and I’msure it will be on her favourites listfrom now on. The main course was sublime, thelovingly-prepared seared beef melted inmy mouth and the sweet red pepperchutney gave it a whole unique tastethat was both spicy and subtle, notmasking the taste of the mouth-watering beef, but complementing it.The chunky chips and wildmushrooms accompanying it wereperfectly cooked and the presentationof this dish resembled that of aMichelin-starred menu. As my guest isa vegetarian I wondered how shewould fair, the waitress gave her plentyof options, but she eventually plumpedfor the wild mushroom and chargrilledpepper risotto with parmesan shavingsand garlic crostini. This dish can soeasily go wrong, but the plate wascleared and my guest remarked thatthis was one of the best she had eaten, neither too filling nor over-seasoned,the mark of an amazing chef! For dessert we stared, both quite fullbut both so tempted, at the sheeramount of choice on the menu andhad really hard decisions to make, itall looked so good! I opted for a darkchocolate and fresh raspberry ganachetart with chantilly cream, this was justincredible, I polished off every lastmorsel while my guest enjoyed awhite chocolate and raspberrycheesecake, again with chantillycream. In a similar fashion to my dish,it was cleared almost immediately. If you are ever in doubt of where togo for a fabulous, home preparedmeal, in great surroundings and withfriendly informative staff, the BlackHorse Inn would be high on our list ofrecommendations. For £12.95 perperson, guests can enjoy delicioushomemade soup, a succulent steakwith all the trimmings and a largeglass of wine – excellent value andextremely popular, the restaurant wasbrimming with diners and theatmosphere was buzzing! On this occasion, we opted for the ala carte menu which offers a mouth-watering selection of dishes, freshlyprepared and presented beautifully. Ibegan with fresh salmon andcoriander fishcakes and dressed babyleaves, served with a pot of Thai sweetchilli jam. The flavours were amazingand the consistency light and fresh. My dining companion decided uponthe twice baked soufflé of Grimsbysmoked haddock and Lincolnshiresmoked poacher cheese, topped withdouble cream, chives and lashings ofcheese. She tells me that it waswonderfully palatable, light and fluffyand indeed the best soufflé she’s evertasted!Simply by sampling the starters, youknow that you are experiencing thevery best in fine dining. John trained inFrance and before opening the Queen’sHead, he cooked at some of the bestrestaurants and hotels in France and theUK. We were notdisappointed. With a lavish restaurantthat takes up the top floor of theclubhouse, it’s probably best describedas plush.Sitting down with a view across thelush greens of the first tee, it was apleasant way to dine and with a menuthat offers both a bar menu and amore luxurious a la carte style we werespoilt for choice. Selecting a starter ofasparagus wrapped in parma ham, thedelicate and piquant flavours of thelocally-grown asparagus werecomplimented by the saltiness andnatural smokiness of the ham. Thepresentation was just incredible too, itseeming a real shame to deconstructsuch a great-looking dish. For the main, we went for a gorgeousduck with pomegranate seeds, segmentsof orange and a salad as well as a goat’scheese tart with caramelised onion setin a wonderful, fluffy puff pastry. Theduck was cooked to perfection, stayingpleasantly warm throughout the mealand balancing well with the tang of theorange and the bursts of sweetness fromthe pomegranate, an often overlookedfruit which can provide an interestingand useful texture to a meal. My diningpartner’s Goat’s cheese tart was of agenerous size and the bitter saltiness ofthe goat’s cheese worked in perfecttandem with the sticky and sweetonion filling. It also helped that thepuff pastry was buttery and delicioustoo, complimenting the other twoelements well. The dessert was a shared stickytoffee pudding, served with creamyand indulgent white custard, flavouredwith vanilla. The sponge was of apleasing texture and had the light, fluffy composure that you expect fromsuch dishes, the sauce was thick andsticky and really set off the custardwith a kick.Laceby Manor is also a fantasticplace to get married or conduct a civilpartnership.
