< Previous40 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFOOD & DININGHaving all the atmosphere youwould expect of such a valuedbuilding, Cave Castle has been acountryside retreat for years and stillhas its original turrets, stone featuresand historic charm. Also boasting anexcellent 18-hole golf course in its 150acres of land, it is both relaxing andbreathtaking in equal measure. The sprawling grounds also offer ahealth club, but we were there to enjoythe fine food, the gym could wait. Therestaurant’s red-carpeted entranceshowed the heritage of the place offexquisitely, with a full suit of armourgreeting guests, a nice touch.Given a choice of either an a la carteor table d’hote menu, both weretempting and offered great pricesconsidering the standard ofsurroundings.Starters were tasty and obviouslycreated with the finest ingredients, ourselections of pressed duck and redmullet were delicious and well-presented, complemented by theluxurious candle-lit surroundings. The staff were courteous andthoughtful, meaning the night had asophisticated feel, the traditionalsurroundings gelled well with themodern menu. Geared more towardsadults, the restaurant seems to suggestelegance and escape to its customers, although larger groups can be cateredfor. The main course came in the form ofa Cave Castle Mixed grill and a fillet ofhalibut. The mixed grill was a classytake on the restaurant staple, with adelicious lamb cutlet nestled alongsidea 4oz rib-eye steak and a pork filletwith puy lentils on the side. This was afilling and mouth-watering dish thathad a myriad of subtle flavours toexcite the palate. The halibut wasserved wrapped in pancetta with agenerous side portion of crushedpotatoes, cabbage and a beurre blancsauce. The vegetables were an excellentseasonal addition to what was alreadya satisfying, light fish dish.Dessert was a luxury affair with ourchoices of gooey chocolate fondantpudding with double chocolate creamand a pear and frangipane tart withcaramel baby-pears and almond creamlooking like works of art when theywere presented. The chocolate fondantgave way to an ooze of thick chocolatesauce and the tart was a pleasinglyfresh way to end the meal.Cave Castle of course does not onlyhave a great restaurant, but is knownthroughout the region as a popularwedding venue, with a special WeddingFayre, taking place on Sunday 23rdSeptember.If you’re planningyour Christmas party, meanwhile, CaveCastle’s party eveningsoffer special rates forovernight stays from£49 (room only). The Cave Castle Hotel and Country Club can be found at Church Hill, South Cave, East Yorkshire, HU15 2EU, call 0844 686 2239 or e-mail info@cavecastlehotel.com. She allowed the youngstersto discover first-hand how organic food is produced, pick upcooking essentials, and learn how to create delicious mealsfrom scratch such as stuffed peppers with ricotta, chorizoand herbs, and bruschetta with parsley salad.Jon Day helps to run Riverford’s local farm, and he says,“Over the last two years Riverford has run a number ofinitiatives to inspire people to cook from scratch. We believepassionately that the best food comes from using organicallygrown, fresh ingredients – you get better flavours andcooking from scratch can be a lot of fun. We hope that ourjunior cooks will take what they’ve learned home, andmaybe show Mum and Dad a thing or two about cookingwith fresh ingredients!”Gainsborough farm shop Uncle Henry’s is also emphasisingthe value of local ingredients and inviting people to take acloser look at the food they eat. I’m basically talkingabout clothing you wear around the house, or when you’regoing into town. It’s clothing you couldhappily spend most of the day in, andthat’s a really important thingnowadays. You need to be able to get alot of use out of the clothes you buy,as there’s a strong move away frombuying an outfit that you might onlywear once or twice a year. For thiscomfy look we’re seeing a lot ofhome-grown fibres and knitwear, including lot of cardigans and coatsthat are quite utilitarian in nature. You can mix and match these kindsof things with other items to go fora smarter or casual look, and thatagain lends itself to the utilitarianappeal. You’re not spending moneyon something you won’t get muchuse out of.The second trend I see around iswhat I like to call New Tradition. Here we’re looking at alot of heritage like items which really show off the Englishculture. This might be because of the jubilee, or maybeeven the Olympics, but the result is that a lot of heritagecolours are being sold, such as deep indigos andburgundy’s. There are plenty of materials and patterns inthis category too, such as Paisleys, cheques and plaids, andthere is a lot of tweed jackets being sold both to womenand men. Collars and cuffs are also becoming moredetailed, with stitches and patternsalong them, and again this is a veryheritage sort of thing, with a lot ofthese patterns being the kind of thingyou might see in Victorian orElizabethan times. The final big trend I notice everywhereI go is the vintage trend, and this isvisible in more than just fashion! Cars, hairstyles, jewellery, it’s all there. It’s avery elegant, romantic feminine lookfrom the heydays of the 1920’s and 30’s.Again, there are a lot of popular patternswith floral prints and sprigs being sold inthis category. Antique laces are alsocoming more into fashion, and accessoriesis an area where vintage can really comealive. Old fashioned or antique broachesand necklaces are really big at the moment. FemmeFATALEFashion expert Rebecca Owens from Noa Noa of Bailgate, Lincoln, takes us through the seasonWRebecca Owens of Noa Noa042-053:Layout 1 7/9/12 12:46 Page 3LINCOLNSHIRETODAY45FASHIONI’m wearing my brogues herewhich is an old style of shoesthat actually used to beexclusive to men. They’rereally comfortable which arestill very trendy. They’re morefrom the new tradition stylethan anything, but as I’ve saidbefore you can easily mix andmatch the different styles tocreate a full effect. You shouldexpect to see a lot of dullmetallic colours in the future, with faded greys, silver andpewter, as well as soft leather. I’m wearing skinny jeanswhich are a real staple at themoment. Their navy colour isvery in fashion and works wellwith pretty much anything, sothey again see plenty of use.I always keep them straightlegged because it helps tomake you look slimmer. They’re just such an all-rounditem, that I use them as abase for a lot of my outfits.I’ve finished my outfit off with ascarf, it’s a paisley pattern from thenew tradition style, and it has a veryantique and heritage look. The bluecolour again works well with theyellow, while the pattern itself addsa third colour to the outfit, withoutoverdoing anything. A lot of womenare afraid to wear printed patternson clothing because they’re unsurehow to fit it in, a scarf is a great wayto do this as it’s small enough not tooverpower anything else. A printedpattern works well when you have aplain colour beneath it.I’m wearing a long line cardigan here asit’s a really comfortable bit of clothingthat I can wear all day while I’m at work.So I’ve taken it from the comfy trend Italked about, but I’ve mixed it up a littlebecause the knit work is a very heritagestyle, so it’s a bit of new tradition as well. This is great because it means I canhappily wear this on a weekend, atwork, or when I’m going out with friends. The longer length of this has a slimmingeffect on women, especially if pairedwith straight leg trousers, by making theupper body look a little longer. I’vechosen to wear this in mustard yellowwhich is a really good colour forbrunettes and redheads. It’s an unusualcolour in that most women aren’t surewhat it works with, so won’t give it a go.But it really works well with navy bluesand greys, and can pull an outfittogether.042-053:Layout 1 7/9/12 12:46 Page 4GANTThis season, GANT continues to tweak thestrong classic pieces that make up thefoundation of the effortlessly stylish wardrobe. The top tier materials, great fits and inherentsense of colour that is so dear to the GANTheart have been truly allowed to flourish inthe autumn collection that also embodiesthe balance between smart and casual.46 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFASHIONCheck Out The Boots & Accessories & New Clothing Collection for Autumn/Winter at The New Look Chantal01522 538711chantalofbailgate@btconnect.comwww.chantalofbailgate.co.uk 042-053:Layout 1 7/9/12 12:46 Page 5BiancaIt’s a colourful start to Bianca’s autumn/winterseason.
