But there is an alternative, which isbetter for the pocket and for the environment.Biomass boilers are now affordable for domesticuse, and from Spring 2014, the Government willpay home owners 12.2p per kWh for heatgenerated from biomass boilers meaninghouseholds can generate guaranteed grant income of more than £3000 per annum for a typicalhousehold.Wooden pellets, which can be fed into the boiler on an automated basis, are used as a fuel and areeasily available and cost as little as 4p/kWh. Overall, the costs for a typical home comes in at 40% of oilcosts. A boiler large enough to heat and create hot water for a four bedroom house costs just £15,000, soin most cases the boiler will have paid for itself in less than five years.Freewatt conducts free surveys to ensure your home has the space necessary and carries out calculationsto ensure it makes financial sense. Stood on the side of a busy mainroad, once the door is closed, you aretransported into another situationcompletely. Gone is the sound of thetraffic and instead is the calm of acottage which is cool and welcoming. Our visit coincides with one of thehottest days we’ve had in a while so thebreezy, comfortable kitchen is a welcomeplace to sit and discuss Jane’s garden andhome over cold lemonade. The house has an incredible historyand its construction has led to it being apopular location for historians and thoseinterested in its unique and charmingcharacter. Unusual joints, particularlywith the beams upstairs are of particularinterest and through hard work anddedication, Jane and her late husbandJohn transformed it into a fantastichome. It’s the garden we’re here to seethough and the history inside is matchedby a quirky and engaging space outside.Use of space is paramount, with thegarden being small, but perfectly-formed.The first thing you notice in thecourtyard is a water feature made fromold sinks, a header tank and even a toiletBee happyLincolnshire Today reader Jane Pow has been at Pow Cottage inTattershall since 1987. This mud and stud home is impressive inits own right, but the garden holds its own wonders too.028-031:Layout 1 13/9/13 14:33 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY29READERS’ GARDENSand a former bath. Now resplendent with waterlilies, the whole arrangement gurgles away, making your entrance to the garden awelcoming one. Beyond that it’s a jungle oftrees, towering flowers and vegetables. However there’s order within and each area isplanted for a reason, and that is Jane’s otherclear love, bees. Two hives stand at the end of the garden in aclearing between trees and among the flowersand fruit. Each plant or flower present can beutilised by the bees, helping them to producethe honey that Jane sells on open days. Havingonly kept bees for a few years, Jane stilldescribes herself as a newcomer, “but you learnso much as you go on,” she explains. “My aimis to plant to suit the bees, what they likestays.”There’s plenty to get excited about for thosemore into their plants. though.
