But what’s thehottest trend for kitchens this year? Here aresome ideas.Heavy metal– Brass is back and looks great! Taps, fixtures and fittings with a rustic metal touch will meanyour kitchen gets that lived-in feel for relatively lowcost. With so many options available you can reallymake a personalised statement that will strike wonderinto guests. Handles for cupboards and doors can lookamazing if you pair them with either super dark orbrilliant white paint.New light, new life– Gone are the horrendousstriplights of yore and their harsh, dazzling andflooding nature and more subtle options are takingtheir place. Thankfully, the idea that LEDs are the onlyanswer is also seeing a slow death and classier, lessnightclub-esque ideas are taking their place. Why notlook into sconces, for example? Subtle and sleek, youmay not be familiar with the name, but the fixed-lightoption is one that will look great in the kitchen andcomments will no doubt abound if you take theplunge and install them.Splash out!– Splashbacks aren’t what you get inthe swimming pool when an overenthusiastic childjumps in, but natural additions to your existing tilingoptions. Why not look into black or natural tones foryours this year? Easy to install and soft on the eye, theyalso mean your kitchen takes on a sleeker look andmakes cleaning a doddle. The really daring can usehuge slabs around cooker hoods and large sinks tocreate more of a statement, say in marble orlimestone.Expose yourself– Raw or exposed wood is seeinga comeback. In a somewhat Scandinavian style, fixedlengths of rough wood or highly rustic table tops giveyour kitchen that bit more of a lift and can truly giveyour home’s busiest room a homely, yet cool look. Why not bring in outdoor elements to create a senseof nature in the kitchen? Often those who loveabstract work will have nothing but thatadorning their walls. Similarly, artistsoften stick to their own personal oeuvre, preferring to adapt it slightly dependingon their current mood or for the morecommercially-minded, what is selling oren vogue at the time. Not so with PeterSegasby’s work. With a background indesign and an appreciation for all kindsof styles of painting, one look at hiswebsite will show you a whole cavalcadeof influences from Salvador Dali to OldMasters’ more classical styles. Sitting inhis light and clean home studio, it’s clearPeter is somewhat of a perfectionist, hisEverythingto everyonePeter Segasby is opening agallery in the beautiful villageof Branston, but also has anincredible talent for art. Wemeet him to see how he worksacross a myriad of genres.024-025:Layout 1 15/9/14 08:47 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY25ARTISTIC LINCOLNSHIREpaintings have a layered, labouredfeel to them that reveals his passionfor painting and his search forauthenticity in the painted image. Having run a design consultancyfor over a decade, Peter’s view of arthas been informed by his guidance ofthose who might not have had atalent to be, as he puts it ‘visuallyarticulate’. Peter has however moved awayfrom this, as he says: “I wanted to dosomething that’s like a hobby, so it’snot hard-edged business.”Although Peter will be exhibitingsome of his paintings in the newgallery Elysium, which forms thebulk of a former Methodist chapel inthe village, there will also be antiquefurniture and incredible sourcedpieces of work that mean you willbe able to envision what they mightlook like in your home. “We can work slowly with people, making sure that we spread ourenthusiasm for art. If someone’spassion is sparked, we can guidethem towards items that match andcomplement each other to create asympathetic look.”Turning to Peter’s art, we ask whyhe has so many different visualstyles. “It’s all there to be played with,”says Peter, “I’m interested in everyaspect of art, you can learn as muchfrom replication as you can when youare creating from the mind.”Indeed, Peter has a lot of originalwork, but he also loves to recreateOld Masters’ work as well as moresurreal styles. One original he showsus is highly reminiscent of Dali’smelting clocks and unusual creaturesas well as Edvard Munch’s ‘TheScream’. However Peter’s thinkingbehind each and every element of thepiece is clear and each piece fits like ajigsaw piece.“I’m always seeking how to fill ablank space. Something can triggerme off like a current event orsomething off the news. I do adopt anintuitive approach and using oilsmeans I can take my time and evenpaint over parts I want to get right. It’s never hard work, my painting isescapism for me.”Until Elysium opens on Saturday 11th October, where some of Peter’s work will be on display,we’d recommend you see his work foryourself at www.petersegasby.co.uk/art1.htmlTo find out more about Elysium Gallery, visitwww.elysiumgallery.co.uk 024-025:Layout 1 15/9/14 08:47 Page 226 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYREADERS’ GARDENSead into theLincolnshire Wolds andyou’ll no doubt come across manyvillages like Goulceby.
