< PreviousThe fallow deer, ordama dama to give itsLatin name, issomewhere in sizebetween the red andthe roe, and perhapsthe most elegant ofBritain’s deer ensemble. While not a traditionalnative of Blighty, thedeer, like roads, concrete and indoorplumbing, was firstintroduced to Englandby the Romans. But itwas the Normans who populated the country willfrolicking fallows after the infamous conquest. In whatevercase, it has since made the island nation its home. The critter is a picturesque and prevalent sight acrossthe country, but particularly abundant in Lincolnshirewhere the lush open space and woodland cater to thefallow’s tastes. The Kesteven uplands, in the southernmostarea of the county, support a number of fallows inamongst the scattered woodland. Likewise, the hilly Woldsare alive with fallows. This environment is particularlysuited as the deer are grass grazers by nature, thoughautumn usually brings a culinary shift to a wholesome dietof cereals, berries and shrub shoots. Herd size is totally dependable on habitat and season, embodying the adage ‘go with the flow’. Their peak timesof activity are in the dawn and dusk hours, but, like otherdeers’, are pretty much on the go 24 hours a day.Daytime hours are spent ‘lying up’ where the fallow will30 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYLINCOLNSHIRE WILDLIFEeffectively meditatebetween one feed andthe next. In more urbanareas, the fallows tend toprefer the quiet andrelative safety of thenight. Most of the fallowdeer seen in Lincolnshireare of the pale chestnutvariation, complete withmottled white flecks anda characteristic blacktale. Other coat coloursinclude black, albino-likewhite and one of a darker spotting. Like its cousins, thefallow is inquisitive and spring heeled, keen to graze butquick to flee. Although they can be seen all year round, September isthe start of the autumnal breeding season - aptly titledthe ‘rut’. The lowlands come alive with the sound ofmales’ belly-belching and hoofing their territorialdeclaration, and the thunderclap of antlers as they fightover females. Mating behaviour is dependent onenvironmental factors and herd size, but males thecountry over go through the various motions and the endresult is always the same. Fallows usually produce a singlefawn in June on an annual basis. With herd population on the rise, chances are you’ll beseeing a fallow deer sometime soon. Its grazing habitsmight be threatening sensitive species and agriculture, but its majesty and grace about make up for it. Just watchout on those winding roads. Seen on spindly legs and encumbered with antlers, the fallow deerstrikes a pose both comical and cute.LincolnshirewildlifePHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/TAVIPHOTO30-31_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:00 Page 1PHOTO: SHUTTERSTOCK.COM/COLIN EDWARDS WILDSIDE30-31_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:00 Page 232 LINCOLNSHIRETODAYFASHIONPassportKnitted patterns and softfabrics create a stylishcontrast to autumnalcolour, stylish-chic is thename of the game. 32-41_Layout 1 14/09/2015 11:25 Page 1LINCOLNSHIRETODAY33FASHIONThe bestof autumn Autumn is now firmly in effect and as the days get colder on theirjourney towards the winter months, it’s time for us to look at what ishitting the catwalk, and soon, our own Lincolnshire streets.
